Book excerpt: The story begins with a meeting between a mysterious stranger and the local Taliban in a mountain village somewhere in the middle-east and shifts 7000 miles away to a million dollar condo in Manayunk, a tony neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where a young woman who was schedled to appear the next day as a witness in a grand jury probe of munincipal corruption, is murdered. Is there a connection between these two seemingly unrelated events? Veteran Homicide Dectective Isadore Ichowitz and Assistant District Attorney Jack Regan set out to solve the crime. Their investigation of the Larson murder leads them to a trail of suspects, many of whom are 'players' connected to Regan's probe of municipal corruption. As the investigation proceeds, Regan and Ichowitz encounter multiple homicides, a plot to assassinate the Vice President and Secretary of State, and other crimes with international implications. The identity of Larson's killer and the connection between these events, however, continues to elude the detective and the young Assistant D.A. Along the way Regan becomes romantically involved with Kate O'Malley, the new chef at the Grape Tavern in Manayunk. O'Malley recently emigrated from Ireland to keep her son safe from his Northern Irish father's family and their wide ranging criminal enterprises. Follow Regan and Ichowitz as their investigation takes them across the iconic neighborhoods of historic Philadelphia from the lofty Main Line and Rittenhouse Square to North Philly's Strawberry Mansion at the opposite end of the economic spectrum and always leading back to Manayunk, as they try to solve the murder in this fast paced thriller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's been six weeks since the rogue Mossad agents, Nooris and Rabinowitz, were recaptured when their attempt to discover the identity of the person who betrayed them was thwarted by the very individual they were seeking. Homicide Detective Isadore Ichowitz is recovering from the wounds he sustained in the incident when Nooris shot him to convince Vito Coratelli to tell them what they wanted to know. Even though Nooris and Rabinowitz are being detained as terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, Ichowitz is concerned that Shona Cohen, the remaining member of the gang, who is still on the loose, is a continuing threat to the well-being of his godson, Assistant District Attorney Jack Regan and his family. Jack believes Izzy's concerns are unwarranted. After all, why would someone who is wanted for murder return to Philly, when her companions are in custody with no chance for release, and she still possesses a valuable post-impressionist painting worth millions, 'The Pitcher' by Georges Bracque, that her gang stole from the Barnes Foundation? Jack's wedding to Kate O'Malley is only 48 hours away, when all hell breaks loose. Jack and Izzy are 'requested' by the CIA to fly to Cuba to assure the former Mossad agents that the deal the U.S. Attorney offered them in return for information that can lead to the apprehension of the new head of Al Qaeda is genuine. Neither Jack nor Izzy can figure out why the terrorists insist on their presence. Jack barely makes it back to Philly in time for the wedding ceremony. Before he can brush the rice from his hair, he has to put his honeymoon plans on hold to help prosecute a multiple murder case against a doctor who ran an abortion mill in West Philly. The doctor is represented by none other than Vito Coratelli. Izzy's retirement from the Philadelphia Police Department is derailed, when the remains of four young women, holding hands, are unearthed in a construction site in Fishtown, an old Philadelphia neighborhood near the banks of the Delaware River, that is fast becoming a destination address for artists, toney restaurants and hip young professionals who follow in their wake. The crime scene reminds the Homicide Chief of a murder investigation Izzy handled 40 years ago. As Ichowitz delves into the mystery of the Fishtown bodies, and Jack's involvement in the murder case becomes more complicated, their concern for the safety of Kate and her son Liam becomes real, when Nooris and Rabinowitz are released from custody, and no one knows the whereabouts of Shona Cohen. Is there a connection between the bodies and the case Izzy handled 40 years ago? Are Kate and Liam in harms' way? Find out in Neal Goldstein's new novel, Fishtown, the exciting sequel to Murder and Mayhem in Manayunk.

Download or read book The Unicorn s Secret written by Steven Levy and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of Ira Einhorn, the Philadelphia antiwar crusader, environmental activist, and New Age guru with a murderous dark side. During the cultural shockwaves of the 1960s and ’70s, Ira Einhorn—nicknamed the “Unicorn”—was the leading radical voice for the antiwar movement at the University of Pennsylvania. At his side were such noted activists as Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. A brilliantly articulate advocate for peace in a turbulent era, he rallied followers toward the growing antiestablishment causes of free love, drugs, and radical ecological reform. In 1979, when the mummified remains of his girlfriend, Holly Maddux, a Bryn Mawr flower child from Tyler, Texas, were found in a trunk in his apartment, Einhorn claimed a CIA frame-up. Incredibly, the network of influential friends, socialites, and powerful politicians he’d charmed and manipulated over the years supported him. Represented by renowned district attorney and future senator Arlen Specter, Einhorn was released on bail. But before trial, he fled the country to an idyllic town in the French wine region and disappeared. It would take more than twenty years—and two trials—to finally bring Einhorn to justice. Based on more than two years of research and 250 interviews, as well as the chilling private journals of Einhorn and Maddux, prize-winning journalist Steven Levy paints an astonishing and complicated portrait of a man motivated by both genius and rage. The basis for 1998 NBC television miniseries The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer, The Unicorn’s Secret is a “spellbinding sociological/true crime study,” revealing the dark and tragic dimensions of a man who defined an era, only to shatter its ideals (Publishers Weekly).

Book excerpt: Greatness is often overlooked in its own time. For Ezzard Charles--one of boxing's most skilled practitioners, with a record of 93-25-1 (52 KO)--recognition took decades. Named by The Ring magazine as the greatest light heavyweight of all time, Charles was frustrated in his attempts to get a shot at the 175-pound title, and as World Heavyweight Champion (1949-1951) struggled to win the respect of boxing fans captivated by Joe Louis' power and charisma. This first-ever biography of "The Cincinnati Cobra" covers his early life in a small country town and his career in the glamorously dirty business of prizefighting in the 1950s, one of the sport's Golden Ages. Charles' fights with Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott, Rocky Marciano and his three wins over the legendary Archie Moore are detailed.
