Book Sleeping Better Together

Download or read book Sleeping Better Together written by Gerhard Klösch and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011-07-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sleeping with a partner is often difficult: many people suffer from sleep disorders, and others have sleep preferences that can disturb their bedmate. This book is for every couple that has found it difficult to share a bed, argued about his snoring or her restless legs, or woken up to the alarm feeling tired and cranky. The authors first explain how sharing a bed affects sleep quality, well-being, and the happiness of the relationship. They then discuss factors that cause couples' sleep disturbances, from individual preferences to gender differences. They describe the connection between personality traits and sleep habits, and they reveal the ways in which age and aging affect our sleep. Most of all, they offer practical advice on how to sleep better with a partner, including getting-ready-for-bed rituals, the emotional and sexual aspects of sharing a bed, and guidelines for allowing children or pets into bed. The book also includes questions for assessing sleep needs and practical suggestions for ending arguments.

Book A Man Called Harris

Download or read book A Man Called Harris written by Michael Sheridan and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Harris was a giant who oozed charisma on screen; offscreen, however, he was troubled and addicted to every pleasure life could offer. Coming from a repressed Irish Catholic background, he was forced by a teenage illness to abandon his beloved rugby, but not his macho appetites. Discovering theater saved him. He had found his calling. Despite marrying the daughter of a peer, he never tried to fit in. He was always a hell-raiser to the core, along with legendary buddies Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole. But he was more; he was a gifted poet and singer. He was an intelligent family man who took great interest in his craft, and was a Renaissance man of the film world. Every time his excesses threatened to kill his career, and himself, he rose magnificently from the ashes, first with an Oscar-winning performance as Bull McCabe in The Field, then in the Harry Potter franchise.

Book excerpt: The Simpsons is one of the most literary and intelligent comedies on television today - fertile ground for questions such as: Does Nietzsche justify Bart's bad behavior? Is hypocrisy always unethical? What is Lisa's conception of the Good? From the editor of and contributors to the widely-praised Seinfeld and Philosophy, The Simpsons and Philosophy is an insightful and humorous look at the philosophical tenets of America's favorite animated family that will delight Simpsons fans and philosophy aficionados alike. The volume also includes an episode guide and a chronology of philosophers which lists the names and dates of the major thinkers in the history of philosophy, accompanied by a representative quote from each. Book Camp TV of The 1960s

Download or read book Camp TV of The 1960s written by Isabel Pinedo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Camp TV of the 1960s offers a comprehensive understanding of all of the many forms camp TV took during that critical decade. In reevaluating the history of camp on television, the authors reconsider the infantilized conceptualization of sixties television, which has generally been characterized as the creative and cultural ebb between the 1950s Golden Age of television and the networks' shift to "relevance" in the early 1970s. Encompassing contributions from a broad range of media and television scholars that (re)consider programs like Batman, The Monkees, The Addams Family, Bewitched, F Troop, The Beverly Hillbillies, and Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, chapters closely examine beloved 1960s American prime-time programs that drew significantly on aspects of camp, many of which were widely syndicated and left continuing imprints on popular culture. Other chapters consider key TV precursors from the early sixties; British camp television programs such as The Avengers; the use of musical codes to convey camp humor (even on black-and-white sets); the role that the viewing strategies of queer communities played - and continued to play even decades later; and how camp's multivalence allowed for more conservative readings, especially among older audiences, which were critical for the move to "mass camp" throughout American culture by the early seventies. Camp TV of the 1960s is essential reading for students and scholars in television studies and others interested in the history and theory of camp, the 1960s, or popular culture, as well as fans of these well-known but generally understudied television programs.

Book Edith Stein and Companions

Download or read book Edith Stein and Companions written by Paul F. W. Hamans and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the same summer day in 1942, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and hundreds of other Catholic Jews were arrested in Holland by the occupying Nazis. One hundred thirteen of those taken into custody, several of them priests and nuns, perished at Auschwitz and other concentration camps. They were murdered in retaliation for the anti-Nazi pastoral letter written by the Dutch Catholic bishops. While Saint Teresa Benedicta is the most famous member of this group, having been canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1998, all of them deserve the title of martyr, for they were killed not only because they were Jews but also because of the faith of the Church, which had compelled the Dutch bishops to protest the Nazi regime. Through extensive research in both original and secondary sources, P.W.F.M. Hamans has compiled these martyrs' biographies, several of them detailed and accompanied by photographs. Included in this volume are some remarkable conversion stories, including that of Edith Stein, the German philosopher who had entered the Church in 1922 and later became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Several of the witnesses chronicled here had already suffered for their faith in Christ before falling victim to Hitler's "Final Solution", enduring both rejection by their own people, including family members, and persecution by the so-called Christian society in which they lived. Among these were those who, also like Sister Teresa Benedicta, perceived the cross they were being asked to bear and accepted it willingly for the salvation of the world. Illustrated

In A Funny Time to Be Gay, Ed Karvoski Jr. traces the evolution of gay and lesbian comedy from the few pioneers in New York's Greenwich Village in the seventies, to the mavericks who played San Francisco's famed Valencia Rose in the eighties, to the comics who starred in their own TV specials in the nineties and continue to headline comedy clubs. With short introductions that reveal the performers’ approaches to both their sexual and professional identities, over thirty hilarious monologues capture the diversity of the gay and lesbian comic community.
