Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Municipal Ownership in Great Britain This book is the second of a series of four books which will give the results of the authors examination of the actual working, in important instances, of the public regulation and the government ownership and operation of the so-called public service industries: the railway, the telegraph, the street railway, the electric light, the electric power plant, and the telephone. The investigations in question have been carried on since the fall of 1892, and they have covered the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and Australia. The books embodying the results of the investigations will follow each other in quick succession. But that does not mean that they are in any way hasty productions. It has been the authors policy to delay publication until he had covered the entire field, because he desired to put at the disposal of the public the means of comparing the experience of several countries in the various kinds of experiments, without long intervals between the successive books setting forth that experience. Download or read book Principles and Methods of Municipal Trading Classic Reprint written by Douglas Knoop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Municipal Trading My inquiries have practically been limited to the United Kingdom and to Germany, the two countries in which municipal trading has probably reached its highest stage of development. The subject is enormous, and to collect and digest the vast mass of detailed information, on which anything approaching a complete study could be based, was beyond my powers with only a limited amount of leisure at my disposal. This consideration was very important, as the information collected would be liable to become out of date before it was used, if too long a period were to be devoted to the investigations. Almost every week some new development in connection with municipal trading is occur ring, so that there is really no end to the inquiries which might be made. I have tried to survey what appear to be the most important problems relating to the subject, but necessarily there are many gaps in the book. Book On Municipal and National Trading Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Municipal and National Trading Classic Reprint written by John Lubbock Avebury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Municipal and National Trading Wales, in the last twenty-four years, 83 per cent, the average debt per head has risen 118 per cent, and the average rate per of valuation 75 per cent. Moreover, as the assessment is increased, we are not only paying a higher rate, but on a higher assess ment; so that the actual sum a man has to pay is raised doubly. These figures are very grave, but they are not all. Though we are paying so much, we are not paying our way. The local authorities are running head over heels into debt. But then we are told that a great part of the debt has been incurred for remunerative purposes, and this may be true in some cases, but I fear I shall be able to show that, as regards most of them. Book The Dangers of Municipal Trading

Download or read book The Dangers of Municipal Trading written by Robert P. Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dangers of Municipal Trading This book discusses a question of great public concern on both sides of the Atlantic. Its aim is to give a brief history of Municipal Ownership (or Trading) in Great Britain, and to set out certain serious aspects of the municipal position in that country which have arisen consequent upon an indiscriminate pursuit of the system, with a view of indicating the probable effect of the extension of a similar method of conducting public utilities in the United States. This method is generally known in England as Municipal Trading and throughout this volume the two terms Municipal Ownership and Municipal Trading should be understood to mean one and the same thing. It has been recognized by thoughtful men that an attempt should be made to bring together, in a volume not too expansive or profound for popular reading, some of the facts and arguments used by the opponents of Municipal Trading in England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Municipal Ownership: Four Lectures Delivered at Harvard University 1907 Had this course of lectures been delivered in England, "Municipal Trade" would probably have been selected as the descriptive title; because these words would best have brought to the minds of Englishmen the range of the subjects to be dealt with. Municipal trade is, however, an ill-selected phrase; for it focuses the mind too exclusively on questions connected with profit and loss. When I had the honour to receive an invitation to deliver a course of lectures in the United States, in order to indicate their scope, I decided to entitle them "Municipal Ownership." Book A Brief History of Printing in England

Download or read book A Brief History of Printing in England written by Frederick W. Hamilton and published by BEYOND BOOKS HUB. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A BRIEF HISTORY of PRINTING IN ENGLAND England was slow to take up printing and slow and backward in the development of it. It was 25 years after the invention of printing before any printing was done in England. It was many years after that before the work of the English printers could compare with that done on the continent. The reason for this is to be found in the conditions of the country itself. Although the two great universities had long been in existence, Oxford dating back to 1167 and Cambridge to 1209, England as a whole was a backward country. In culture and the refinements of civilization, as well as in many more practical things, England was not so far advanced as the rest of Europe nor was it to be so for many years to come. England at this time was an agricultural and grazing country. A colony of Flemings had been brought over to start the cloth industry. There was still, nevertheless, a large export of wool to Flanders, which was there woven and sent back as cloth. The English nobles lived largely on their estates, looking after their tenants, hunting for diversion, and doing a little fighting occasionally when life became otherwise unbearably uninteresting. They were not an educated class and the peasantry were profoundly ignorant. The cities which, as always, depended upon manufacture and commerce were just beginning to grow, with the exception of some of the seaport towns which were already prosperous and wealthy. Not only was this general condition true, but there were special conditions which rendered the middle of the fifteenth century unfavorable to culture and to the introduction of a new invention auxiliary to culture. In 1450 England was shaken and horrified by the bloody insurrection of peasants, with its attendant outrages, known as Jack Cade’s Revolt. Scarcely had order been restored when a disputed succession to the crown plunged the country into the bloody civil war between the adherents of the Houses of York and Lancaster, known as the Wars of the Roses. This period of civil strife lasted for thirty years and affected the general welfare of England very seriously. It was especially marked by mortality among the noblest families in the realm, many of which were actually exterminated. Some time within this bloody half-century the art of printing was introduced into England. There is in existence a book printed in Oxford and dated on the title page 1468. Upon the existence of this book, and upon a somewhat doubtful legend, has been built a claim that English printing originated in Oxford. This claim, however, has practically ceased to be maintained. The legend appears to be baseless, and it has been generally concluded that the date is a misprint and that it should be 1478, an X having been dropped in writing the Roman date, a not uncommon error in publications of this period. Historians have now generally agreed that the introduction of printing in England is due to William Caxton, one of the most interesting figures in the whole annals of printing. A BRIEF HISTORY of PRINTING IN ENGLAND
