Book Mundus Cognobilis and Mundus Causalis

Download or read book Mundus Cognobilis and Mundus Causalis written by G.M. Mes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recommending a book like this, one is tempted to fall back on cliches such as 'brilliant insights', 'original perspectives', etc. The origina lity of this book is on a different plane. The problem of subject and object has been central to Western philo sophic thinking at least since the time of Descartes. So much so that many students of philosophy see it as the philosophical problem. In his Mundus Cognobilis and Mundus Causalis Mr. Mes offers an ontological-epistemological view, the originality of which consists precisely in the fact that it is not an innovation. Rather, it seeks to put 'in order' the elements already at hand in such a way as to show the subject-object paradox to be non-existent where it seems to be significant and trivial where it really does occur. He has a new and interesting perspective both on what 'materialism' might mean and on how a 'scientific' view of the world has to be constructed. 'Energy-patterns' emerge as explanatory ulti mates, although there is no effort to arrive at any sort of ultimate meta physics.

Book Three Late Medieval Morality Plays Everyman Mankind and Mundus et Infans

Download or read book Three Late Medieval Morality Plays Everyman Mankind and Mundus et Infans written by G.A. Lester and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Take example, all ye that this do hear or see..." The Morality Play was popular in England between 1400 and 1600. It offers moral instruction and spiritual teaching with personal abstractions representing good and evil. Surviving plays from that period number about sixty and the three in this edition were among the first ten. Mankind is a plain, honest farming man who struggles against worldly and spiritual temptation. The bawdy humour and violent action in the play serve to make the moral point and instruct by example. Everyman portrays a man's struggles in the face of death to raise himself to a state of grace so that he may experience everlasting life. It is exceptional among the Moralities for this narrow focus on the last phase of life, and conveys its message with awe-inspiring seriousness. Mundus et Infans is more typical of the Morality genre. It shows an arrogant, bullying protagonist led astray by a single evildoer into a life of debauchery, before the inevitable conversion to virtue. In showing the whole of man's life it is the antithesis of Everyman, the action of which seems to take place in a single day.

This book gathers works that reflect recent challenges examined by the fresh eyes of young professionals brought together to stretch conventions towards an innovative approach to urban studies. The reader will find world-wide as well as more localised study cases in four chapters that embed the most up-to-date questions permeating the field: sociocultural production and urban space, urban governance and social challenges, contemporary planning and cooperating in the south and sustainable urban infrastructure. Each of these chapters is introduced by prominent authors such as Prof. Amos Rapoport, PhD. Jaqueline Britto Pólvora, Prof. Guiqing Yang and Cor Dijkgraaf, who have been of great importance during the course of this advanced Master studies.

Download or read book Mundus Emblematicus written by K. A. E. Enenkel and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteen articles in this volume deal with the Neo-Latin emblem book after the birth of the genre with Andrea Alciato's Emblematum libellus (1531). While the interest in emblematics has grown considerably during the last decades, the seminal Neo-Latin production has received relatively little attention. In Mundus Emblematicus an international team of experts in the field makes this part of the emblem tradition accessible to a broad scholarly audience. The articles cover a variety of emblem books published at the time, ranging from influential humanist collections (for instance those by Achille Bocchi, Hadrianus Junius, or Joachim Camerarius) to alchemist (Michael Maier) or religious emblems (such as the books of the Calvinist Theodere de Beze, or the Jesuit Herman Hugo). In each paper subjects dealt with include the historical context of the work and its makers, the relation between word and image, the structure of the collection as a whole, and the emblematic game (intertextuality in word and image). Moreover, several articles explore the interaction between the emblem and connected literary phenomena, like the commonplace-book, the fable or the use of commentaries. All papers are in English and all examples from Latin texts are translated. Together, these articles show the variety within the Neo-Latin emblem production, thus challenging traditional approaches of the emblem. As such Mundus Emblematicus contributes towards a more comprehensive view of the forms and functions of the genre as a whole.
