Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, Time, Esquire, BookPage, and more This darkly hilarious and “delicious new novel that ravishes with sex and food” (The Boston Globe) from the acclaimed author of The Pisces and So Sad Today is a “precise blend of desire, discomfort, spirituality, and existential ache” (BuzzFeed). Rachel is twenty-four, a lapsed Jew who has made calorie restriction her religion. By day, she maintains an illusion of existential control, through obsessive food rituals, while working as an underling at a Los Angeles talent management agency. At night, she pedals nowhere on the elliptical machine. Rachel is content to carry on subsisting—until her therapist encourages her to take a ninety-day communication detox from her mother, who raised her in the tradition of calorie counting. Rachel soon meets Miriam, a zaftig young Orthodox Jewish woman who works at her favorite frozen yogurt shop and is intent upon feeding her. Rachel is suddenly and powerfully entranced by Miriam—by her sundaes and her body, her faith and her family—and as the two grow closer, Rachel embarks on a journey marked by mirrors, mysticism, mothers, milk, and honey. “A ruthless, laugh-out-loud examination of life under the tyranny of diet culture” (Glamour) Broder tells a tale of appetites: physical hunger, sexual desire, spiritual longing, and the ways that we compartmentalize these so often interdependent instincts. Milk Fed is “riotously funny and perfectly profane” (Refinery 29) from “a wild, wicked mind” (Los Angeles Times).

Book Meaning Making for Living

Download or read book Meaning Making for Living written by Koji Komatsu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access Brief analyzes the dynamics in which children’s selves emerge through their everyday activities of meaning construction, both in their relationships with family and within school education. It begins with a discussion of new psychological inquiries into children's selves and builds upon the innovative theoretical notion of the Presentational Self, developed by the author over the last decade. The book illustrates how the observation of children’s meaning construction in their everyday lives becomes a starting point for theoretical and empirical inquiries into child development and gives a framework that promotes new inquiries in this area. The book describes the Presentational Self Theory as a sense of how the notion of the Self is being worked upon in everyday life encounters. Chapters feature in-depth analyses of exchanges between adults and children in the Japanese cultural context. Meaning-Making for Living will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in the fields of cognitive, social, developmental, educational, and cultural psychology.

Book Parables of Love from Mom

Download or read book Parables of Love from Mom written by Chamisa Loraine Howard and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When my children were small and my husband in college, I continued to recreate the stories my parents told me as a child about animals having personalities and their teaching abilities. I used the stories to teach my children moral principles through fables. They knew if they went to bed by 8:00 p.m., they would get another chapter of some favorite pretend stories, spun out night after night, chapter by chapter. Many of these stories led to daytime adventures as the kids lifted up flat rocks in search of Harvey Rabbit's magic hole with the candy factory. They made horn toads into pets and few a mouse in box fitted with a running wheel. In 1989, I decided to write down some of those favorite stories to give my now grown children as a Christmas present. My artist sister illustrated these stories for me. The compilation of stories has been sitting in my cedar chest for 30 years, until recently, when I had them re-printed for my now growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. God bless each and every child out there, that they may come to know in their head and heart that we are all God's angels placed here on earth with extraordinary abilities in order to love and bless each other's lives.

Book Lactivism

  • Author : Courtney Jung
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-11-24
  • ISBN : 0465039693
  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book Lactivism written by Courtney Jung and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Breastfeeding has become a moral imperative in 21st century America. Once upon a time, this moral imperative made sense. Breastfeeding was believed to bring multiple health benefits, including increased resistance to many chronic and even fatal diseases, protection against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), improved intelligence, and countless immunities. The irony now, however, is that breastfeeding continues to gain moral force just as scientists are showing that its benefits have been greatly exaggerated. In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention declared the failure to breastfeed "a public health issue, " thus placing bottle-feeding on par with smoking, obesity, and unsafe sex. Recently, politicians too have launched highly visible breastfeeding initiatives, such as former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's well-publicized Latch On campaign. And, meanwhile, women who don't breastfeed their babies have found themselves with a lot of explaining to do. Physicians, public health officials, and other mothers are pressuring them to breastfeed even though the best science shows that the advantages of doing so are minimal at best. What is going on? In Lactivism, Courtney Jung offers the most deeply researched and far-reaching critique of the breastfeeding imperative to date. Drawing on a wide range of evidence, from rigorously peer-reviewed scientific research to interviews with physicians, politicians, business interests, activists, social workers, and mothers from across the social and political spectrum, Jung presents an eye-opening account of how a practice that began as an alternative to Big Business has become Big Business itself"--

Book The Dementia Diaries of My Beautiful Mom Nellie May Born in April

Download or read book The Dementia Diaries of My Beautiful Mom Nellie May Born in April written by Wendy Howles and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true happenings of the time in the life of Nellie May born in April. A little joke we shared with Nellie regarding when she was born. Nellie did not have a happy childhood with a dad who beat her, she went through traumatic times when she had to go in the air raid shelter during the war when she was growing up. She went to a comprehensive school and started work at the age of 14. When Nellie was in her fifties, she liked to have a drink. I remember one day a taxi driver came to our house and asked if Nellie was at home I said no, he said I think I have her in my car (and he had). Looking back, we had some very funny times. Nellie was the life and soul of the party. She was feisty, head strong, not afraid to speak her mind, funny, loving, caring and beautiful she would do anything for anyone. She loved to dance and sing and play the organ. Nellie was in her eighties when she developed the terrible disease dementia, of which these diaries are about to tell. There were sad times but also some happy times. Nellie would always pronounce the word baby as babby as that is how she would say it. These diaries tell of what happened during her time with dementia.

We know how those emotions intensify when it is from our own family members, those that are supposed to love and take care of us but are not always successful at it. I wanted to feel what others had, to read it, and to experience it just a little. As others shared what their mom relationships were like, that pain was deeper than I realized before. I no longer wanted to live through your experiences; instead, I wanted to let you know I get it a little. Through some real honest moments came some really raw memories and painful truths, not just my own but yours as well. I found myself weeping and praying for all of you that shared your stories with me. I know I needed to go on a journey with God as my guide to find my "missing mom pieces" so I could heal and pass that on to you. So I pray you take this journey as you figure out what your missing mom pieces are so you may feel peace in the pain, strength in the sorrow, and healing in the days to come. Are you ready?
