Grounded in the emerging field of critical archival studies, this book uncovers how dominant western archival theories and practices are oppressive by design, while looking toward the the radical politics of community archives to envision new liberatory theories and practices. Based on more than a decade of ethnography at community archives sites including the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA), the book explores how members of minoritized communities activate records to build solidarities across and within communities, trouble linear progress narratives, and disrupt cycles of oppression. Caswell explores the temporal, representational, and material aspects of liberatory memory work, arguing that archival disruptions in time and space should be neither about the past nor the future, but about the liberatory affects and effects of memory work in the present. Urgent Archives extends the theoretical range of critical archival studies and provides a new framework for archivists looking to transform their practices. The Martins' disappearance spurred the largest missing persons search in Oregon history and the mystery has remained perplexingly unsolved to this day. For the past six years, JB Fisher (Portland on the Take) has pored over the case after finding in his garage a stack of old Oregon Journal newspaper articles about the story. Through a series of serendipitous encounters, Fisher obtained a wealth of first-hand and never-before publicized information about the case including police reports from several agencies, materials and photos belonging to the Martin family, and the personal notebooks and papers of Multnomah County Sheriff's Detective Walter E. Graven, who was always convinced the case was a homicide and worked tirelessly to prove it. Graven, however, faced real resistance from his superiors to bring his findings to light. Used as a trail left behind after his 1988 death to guide future researchers, Graven's personal documents provide fascinating insight into the question of what happened to the Martins—a path leading to abduction and murder, an intimate family secret, and civic corruption going all the way to the Kennedys in Washington, DC.

Book excerpt: Records of Multnomah County, Oregon, formed in 1854, the most populous county in the state and the location of the city of Portland. The collection consists of a variety of records assembled by the Oregon Historical Society from various sources and dating primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These provide a fragmentary record of the county government activities at the time and are by no means comprehensive. Most of the records relate to land tenure and taxes, including assessment rolls for 1859, 1861, and 1864; probate records from 1859-1871; marriage certificates and licenses, 1879-1963; estate papers, 1850-1896, including papers for the estate of Daniel Lownsdale, one of the original developers of the Portland townsite; voters' lists from 1948 and 1950; and various financial ledgers from the late 19th century. Also included are three volumes of criminal records from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, which contain photographs and background information on convicted individuals. Also of interest is a prisoner record, 1896-1899; a census of disabled children from 1926; items from John Dolan, County Assessor; a list of county officers for the years 1854-1938; and a copy of an 1848 poll book relating to votes on the state's constitution and on the slavery issue. Microfilmed records consist of direct and indirect deed indexes from 1850-1903. Some early records of Washington County, Oregon, are also included.

The street that runs from the Willamette River to Mount Tabor has been called a hippie haven and a shopper's paradise. It takes its name from Dr. J.C. Hawthorne, who opened Oregon's first asylum there in 1861. Streetcars brought population growth, grocery stores, and saloons. In 1912, the delegates to the Elks' national convention paraded on Hawthorne Boulevard, and the 1948 Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade was there. In the 1950s, the Hawthorne Boosters kept the bustle in the boulevard, but the 1970s brought vacant storefronts. Cheap rent created opportunities for hip entrepreneurs, and organized revitalization in the 1980s was sensitive to the communities' unique character. Today, Hawthorne Boulevard draws visitors from across the city and around the world.
