Multistage sorting networks can be one of the many applications using interconnection networks. In this monograph, the generalized odd-even merge design is discussed in detail. Designing switching network is another important application of the multistage networks. Generally, interconnection network can be blocking, rearrangeably nonblocking, or nonblocking, or with variable connecting capabilities, from rearrangeable for permutation to nonblocking for multicast services. Novel multistage switching fabric designs, the PINIUM and PINIUM+ switches, for packet switching and multicasting are discussed. A novel switching framework of high-performance hardware schedulers for various buffering techniques based on interconnection networks are discussed.

Book excerpt: A single instruction stream - multiple data stream (SIMD) computer performs one algorithm (single instruction stream) on vectors of data of a control unit (CU), processing elements (PEs), and an interconnection network. The CU broadcasts instructions to the N Pes (where N is a power of two). The interconnection network is the mechanism that allows PEs to pass data among themselves. Four types of interconnection networks are discussed in this work: the Shuffle-Exchange network, the Cube network, the ILLIAC network, and the Plus-Minus 2 (PM2I) network. Each type has been discussed in the literature and used in an existing or proposed machine design. For each of these four network types, different hardware structures are considered. A recirculating network consists of one stage of switches that is reused until the data reach their final destinations. A combinational logic multistage network consists of several stages of switches and, usually, data is transferred in one pass through the network. In pipelined multistage networks, which are introduced, registers are inserted after each stage of a combinational logic multistage network. The data are divided into segments, and these segments are passed in a parallel-pipelined manner. Hardware implementations for recirculating, combinational logic multistage, and pipelined multistage networks are presented and analyzed.

Book excerpt: Data centers connect a larger number of servers requiring IO and switches with low power and delay. Virtualization of IO and network is crucial for these servers, which run virtual processes for computing, storage, and apps. We propose using the PCI Express (PCIe) protocol and a new PCIe switch fabric for IO and switch virtualization. The switch fabric has little data buffering, allowing up to 512 physical 10 Gb/s PCIe2.0 lanes to be connected via a switch fabric. The switch is scalable with adapters running multiple adaptation protocols, such as Ethernet over PCIe, PCIe over Internet, or FibreChannel over Ethernet. Such adaptation protocols allow integration of IO often required for disjoint datacenter applications such as storage and networking. The novel switch fabric based on space-time carrier sensing facilitates high bandwidth, low power, and low delay multi-protocol switching. To achieve Terabit switching, both time (high transmission speed) and space (multi-stage interconnection network) technologies are required. In this paper, we present the design of an up to 256 lanes Clos-network of multistage crossbar switch fabric for PCIe system. The switch core consists of 48 16x16 crossbar sub-switches. We also propose a new output contention resolution algorithm utilizing an out-of-band protocol of Request-To-Send (RTS), Clear-To-Send (CTS) before sending PCIe packets through the switch fabric. Preliminary power and delay estimates are provided.

Despite the current crisis of the telecom industry, our everyday life increasingly depends on communication networks for information exchange, medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours. High capacity links are required by the large futemet traffic demand, and optical networks remain one of the most promising technologies for meeting these needs. WDM systems are today widely deployed, thanks to low-cost at extreme data rates and high reliability of optical components, such as optical amplifiers and fixed/tunable filters and transceivers. Access and metropolitan area networks are increasingly based on optical technologies to overcome the electronic bottleneck at the network edge. Traditional multi-layer architectures, such as the widely deployed IP/ATM/SDH protocol stack, are increasingly based on WDM transport; further efforts are sought to move at the optical layer more of the functionalities available today in higher protocol layers. New components and subsystems for very high speed optical networks offer new design opportunities to network operators and designers. The trends towards dynamically configurable all-optical network infrastructures open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices, which must face issues such as interoperability and unified control and management.
