Book excerpt: The book focuses on Indonesia's most pressing labor market challenges and associated policy options to achieve higher and more inclusive economic growth. The challenges consist of creating jobs for and the skills in a youthful and increasingly better educated workforce, and raising the productivity of less-educated workers to meet the demands of the digital age. The book deals with a range of interrelated topics---the changing supply and demand for labor in relation to the shift of workers out of agriculture; urbanization and the growth of megacities; raising the quality of schooling for new jobs in the digital economy; and labor market policies to improve both labor standards and productivity.

Book Trade Unions Behaviour in Multinationals in Indonesia

Download or read book Trade Unions Behaviour in Multinationals in Indonesia written by Riani Rachmawati and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis has aimed to explore the strategy chosen by unions in multinationals which in turn would influence the unionÂ's behaviour towards the management in the so-called Â'neo-liberalismÂ' environment. Multinationals were chosen for this thesis as multinationals have been among the role players in Indonesian economy particularly after the SuhartoÂ's era (1966-onwards). As cheap labour is one of the necessary conditions to attract foreign investment as Indonesia does not have technological superiority or abundant skilled labour, it was important to examine the role of trade union in multinationals as the representative of the employees to enhance to conditions of its members. Four multinationals from different industries were studied to enable comparison. The theoretical model underpinning this thesis has been that of HuzzardÂ's (2004) strategic choice model. This model suggested that there are four levels of strategy which unions would have to choose. The HuzzardÂ's strategic choice model ranges form choosing and defining the unionÂ's mission, ideology and identity to that of choosing unionÂ's structures, processes and capacities. This model also suggests that the choice of the strategy is highly influenced by the internal and external factors of the union.

Book Human Resource Management in Indonesia

Download or read book Human Resource Management in Indonesia written by Jenny S Lange and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, with over 240 million people and rich of natural resources and abundant human resources, is very attractive for investors operating in wide array of industries. Many reports on Human Resource Management (HRM) and the English journals have written about the developing countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia (countries such as Hong Kong, China, and India), but surprisingly, writing on HRM issues in Indonesia has been rare and mainly limited to labor economics and macro-level Human Resources Development. Therefore, this thesis intends to make a contribution to literatures of HRM issues in Indonesia, with the example for German companies which are establishing their subsidiaries in Indonesia. This book examines Human Resource Management Issues in Indonesia from environment context such as political, economical, socio-cultural, technological, environmental and legal perspective (PESTEL Analysis); culture dimension difference between Indonesia and Germany; and the current issues of managing human resources in Indonesia by firms, especially for multinational companies, such as issues of general condition of labors, recruitment and selection process, compensation appraisal, performance management, trade unions and gender. Regarding HRM issues, the study has also shown that foreign companies have many threats, if they establish their subsidiaries in Indonesia. But on the other hand, Indonesia has some strengths and already improved some essential sectors that should be considered as opportunities for foreign companies, such as abundance in labors, rich natural resources, good international relationships, increasing foreign trades and FDI, growing telecommunication development, and starts improving national education and health. As conclusion, the HRM issues for foreign companies establishing a subsidiary in Indonesia are very complex, especially due to environment aspects and culture dimension difference. However, through understanding culture dimension of Indonesian societies, use the opportunities and minimize the risks, managing people in Indonesia is not an impossible mission.

Book The Effect of FDI on Indonesia s Jobs Wages and Structural Transformation

Download or read book The Effect of FDI on Indonesia s Jobs Wages and Structural Transformation written by Victor Steenbergen and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) can provide important opportunities for middle-class jobs by stimulating employment growth, paying wage premiums, and helping to shift workers out of less productive sectors. This analysis exploits regional variations in sales to examine the effect that multinational corporations (MNCs) in the manufacturing sector have on employment and wages in Indonesia between 2007 and 2015. Using interaction effects, it explores how these effects differ by workers' education level, occupation, and employment status. The study finds that manufacturing MNCs raise average wages in their sector. Yet, higher-educated workers benefit more, and white-collar workers see greater benefits than blue-collar workers. Women also appear to benefit more than men, as a result of the type of labor-intensive sectors MNCs engage in. The study finds evidence that manufacturing FDI can help to accelerate structural transformation, as workers move out of lower-productivity sectors (agriculture and low-skilled services) and into higher-productivity manufacturing.

This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Development of Small scale Industries During the New Order Government in Indonesia

Download or read book Development of Small scale Industries During the New Order Government in Indonesia written by Tulus Tahi Hamonangan Tambunan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: As in many other LDCs, in Indonesia small-scale industries (SSIs) are important, particularly with respect to the creation of employment opportunities. SSIs are expected to absorb many millions of workers who have been displaced by current economic crisis. This work seeks to explain the pattern of development of SSIs in Indonesia within a broader theoretical framework. It also deals with a number of SSI development-related aspects that in Indonesia so far have never or rarely been studied, such as the formation of strategic alliance, cluster development, and application of theories of flexible specialization to the LDCs. The book also tries to examine empirically the effects of the current economic crisis and to assess theoretically the likely impact of the full implementation of the agreed IMF reform package on SSI development in the country. Main problems faced by small producers and the government policy environment are highlighted through several detailed examples.
