Book excerpt: Having been ruled, more or less continuously, by a range of monarchical dynasties for three millennia, the end of the monarchy in Iran was relatively sudden, taking place in two short years. Since then, Iran has gone through tumultuous change, yet is still apparently caught in a cycle of transition. Iran has now created a complex but unique and non-transferrable system of government, but the question to be asked is whether the Islamic republic has lived up to its founding expectations, serving the Iranian people and helping them to realize their aspirations. This book is the first comprehensive analytical study of the forces which have been shaping and changing modern Iran and its relations with the rest of the world. It looks at the roots of the 1979 revolution and the forces unleashed during the modernization process under the Pahlavi monarchy. Applying a range of theoretical approaches to understanding the Islamic republic’s neo-authoritarian political system, Anoushiravan Ehteshami reflects on how the country’s new elite emerged and how these new political forces have changed Iran, the stresses on its political system, the forces shaping the country’s political economy, and the Islamic republic’s international relations. As some of Iran's leaders appear to crave permanent revolution as their means of staying in power, this book argues that the struggle for the soul of the Islamic Republic has mired the country in a cycle of change: Constant reform and transition. The republic finds itself stuck in transition. Written in a clear and insightful manner, this book provides an unparalleled analysis of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a major regional actor and gives fresh insights into the political workings of the world’s only Shia, and revolutionary, Islamic republic. It will be of great importance to students and scholars of Middle East Politics and International Relations, as well as the policy community whose gaze is never too far from this unique country.

Book The Rise and Fall of the Shah

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Shah written by Amin Saikal and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 4, 1979, when students occupied the American Embassy in Tehran and subsequently demanded that the United States return the Shah in exchange for hostages, the deposed Iranian ruler's regime became the focus of worldwide scrutiny and controversy. But, as Amin Saikal shows, this was far from the beginning of Iran's troubles. Saikal examines the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, especially from 1953 to 1979, in the context of his regime's dependence on the United States and his dreams of transforming Iran into a world power. Saikal argues that, despite the Shah's early achievements, his goals and policies were full of inherent contradictions and weaknesses and ultimately failed to achieve their objectives. Based on government documents, published and unpublished literature, and interviews with officials in Iran, Britain, and the United States, The Rise and Fall of the Shah critically reviews the domestic and foreign policy objectives--as well as the behavior--of the Shah to explain not only what happened, but how and why. In a new introduction, Saikal reflects on what has happened in Iran since the fall of the Shah and relates Iran's past to its political present and future.

It also presents a case study on a leading manufacturing subsector—the automotive industry. The book then offers a set of analyses concerning the country’s trade sector, including exchange rate policies, ways to connect to global markets, and accession to the World Trade Organization. In turn, the closing chapters investigate various aspects of Iran’s labor market and offer policy recommendations on the creation of productive jobs. Readers will learn about effective industrial, trade, and employment policies that can complement macroeconomic measures adopted by the government. As such, the book will appeal not only to scholars and policy-makers, but also to international investors seeking to understand various core aspects of Iran’s industrial and employment structures and trade regime.

Book The Social History Of Labor In The Middle East

Download or read book The Social History Of Labor In The Middle East written by Ellis Goldberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once considered of little import, the social history of labor in the Middle East emerged in the 1980s as a major area of research, as historians sought to uncover the roots of working-class organizing. This volume, the first in an important new series, presents a broad overview of recent literature on the history of workers in the Middle East since 1800 in a bold effort to bring together new directions in research and to reexamine the relevance of established ones. Contributors explore the history of labor by situating state-led industrialization within the context of older artisanal social communities. They examine how industrialization enhanced government control over the economy as a whole and analyze the public's reaction to centralized economic authority. They also explain the longevity of social coalitions supporting state industrial monopolies and examine their breakdown, along with the emergence of Islamist and other oppositional movements. Taken together the essays provide a historically grounded context for viewing the shifting relationship between states and the world economy as well as between particular states and classes and form a rich synthesis of current interdisciplinary literature on work and workers in the region.

Book Dynamics of the Iranian Revolution

Download or read book Dynamics of the Iranian Revolution written by Jahangir Amuzegar and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-09-27 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going back to the turn of the century, this book offers a cogent analysis and an objective assessment of the origins and dimensions of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. It reassesses the narrowly focused post-revolution explanations, as it traces the fate of the Pahlavi dynasty to deep-rooted and structural weaknesses and contradictions in Iranian society, economy, and politics. This critical examination leaves the reader with a deeper understanding of Iran's modern history and an appreciation for the interplay of forces currently at work within the Islamic Republic. It also provides persuasive commentary on the inherent plight of other Third World countries plagued with similar legacies and pre-revolutionary conditions.

Book FDI and Industrial Organization in Developing Countries

Download or read book FDI and Industrial Organization in Developing Countries written by Pradeep Kanta Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2005. Analyzing the impact of FDI on industrial organization in India in the midst of changes wrought by globalization is a daunting task. The Indian economy is large and disparate, with a multitude of economic and political institutions and an unsteady record of policy reform. Drawing comparisons with other Asian economies, this monograph identifies the factors that contribute to the successful creation of globally competitive industries by illustrating the nature of interchange between FDI, indigenous capital, industry policy and institutions. It also analyzes the contribution of foreign affiliates and domestic enterprises to industrial development. Using case studies and quantitative analysis, the work reveals new and significant features of Indian business and industry. In view of the recent interest generated regarding India's prowess in high technology sectors and its potential to be the next economic 'powerhouse', the empirical analyses and issues raised in this book are both timely and comprehensive.

Book The Multinational Enterprise and Legal Control

Download or read book The Multinational Enterprise and Legal Control written by Cynthia Day Wallace and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 1359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited new book from Cynthia Day Wallace picks up the thread of her best-selling Legal Control of the Multinational Enterprise: National Regulatory Techniques and the Prospects for International Controls. In the present work she applies herself to legal and pragmatic aspects of control surrounding MNE operations. The primary focus is on legal and administrative techniques and measures practised by host states to control – transparently or less so – foreign MNE activity within their territories, or even extraterritorially when effects are felt within national boundaries. The primary geographic focus is the six most investment-intensive industrialized states (namely,Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom). At the same time an important message of the present study is precisely the implication for the developing countries as well as for the emerging market economies of central and eastern Europe - and even Asian nations besides Japan, because it is the sharing of this very ‘experience of years’ that can best serve to facilitate a fuller participation on the part of the up-and-coming economies in the same global market place.
