Book excerpt: Due to the proliferation of ever new devices, many of them portable, digital communication is really getting “everywhere, at anytime”. The question is, how effectively are multimedia applications “surfing” from one device/context of use to the other, not from a technological but from a substantial, content-driven point of view? Do they really fit these new communication needs? This paper proposes a cost-effective approach to this problem (that we may define as “context adptativity”), a valid alternative to building new content from scratch every time a new device (and therefore situation of use) in envisaged. Taking inspiration from the “building blocks” game, we propose to create sets of pieces of information that can be re-combined and re-used many times to fit the needs that the various combinations of device/format/context of use bring about. The approach is exemplified by means of a case-study: a set of multi-channel applications for the Civic Archeological Museum of Milan.
