Quantum cryptographic protocols promise everlasting security by exploiting distinctive quantum properties of nature. The most extensively implemented protocol is quantum key distribution (QKD), which enables secure communication between two users. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to state-of-the-art QKD and illustrate its recent multi-user generalization: quantum conference key agreement. With its pedagogical approach that doesn’t disdain going into details, the book enables the reader to join in cutting-edge research on quantum cryptography.

Book Quantum Key Distribution on Multi user Optical Networks

Download or read book Quantum Key Distribution on Multi user Optical Networks written by Iris Choi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provides a method for 2 parties to exchange keys for encryption purposes. Unlike conventional schemes which rely on unproven mathematical complexity, the security of QKD is guaranteed by laws of physics. This thesis studies and demonstrates the feasibility of using QKD over conventional metropolitan and access networks to enable data security. This thesis consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 briefly describes the history of QKD. It also introduces the idea of using QKD for data security over conventional networks and identifies spontaneous Raman scattering as the main challenge to be overcome when designing QKD systems for use on conventional networks. Chapter 2 provides background information on QKD. It explains the physics which enable secure QKD. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the system components used in this PhD. Their physical principles are discussed. Chapter 4, 5 and 6 are experimental chapters where practical implementations of QKD systems over conventional networks will be presented. With novel Raman noise suppression schemes invented during this PhD, the first QKD systems implemented over realistic access networks are demonstrated. Their details will be discussed in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6.

Book Bell s Theorem Quantum Theory and Conceptions of the Universe

Download or read book Bell s Theorem Quantum Theory and Conceptions of the Universe written by Menas Kafatos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bell's Theorem and its associated implications for the nature of the physical world remain topics of great interest. For this reason many meetings have been recently held on the interpretation of quantum theory and the implications of Bell's Theorem. Generally these meetings have been held primarily for quantum physicists and philosophers of science who have been or are actively working on the topic. Nevertheless, other philosophers of science, mathematicians, engineers as well as members of the general public have increasingly taken interest in Bell's Theorem and its implications. The Fall Workshop held at George Mason University on October 21 and 22, 1988 and titled "Bell's Theorem, Quantum Theory and Conceptions of the Universe" was of a more general scope. Not only it attracted experts in the field, it also covered other topics such as the implications of quantum non-locality for the nature of consciousness, cosmology, the anthropic principle, etc. topics usually not covered in previous meetings of this kind. The meeting was attended by more than one hundred ten specialists and other interested people from all over the world. The purpose of the meeting was not to provide a definitive answer to the general questions raised by Bell's Theorem. It is likely that the debate will go on for quite a long time. Rather, it was meant to contribute to the important dialogue between different disciplines.

Book Multi photon Quantum Secure Communication

Download or read book Multi photon Quantum Secure Communication written by Pramode K. Verma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores alternative ways of accomplishing secure information transfer with incoherent multi-photon pulses in contrast to conventional Quantum Key Distribution techniques. Most of the techniques presented in this book do not need conventional encryption. Furthermore, the book presents a technique whereby any symmetric key can be securely transferred using the polarization channel of an optical fiber for conventional data encryption. The work presented in this book has largely been practically realized, albeit in a laboratory environment, to offer proof of concept rather than building a rugged instrument that can withstand the rigors of a commercial environment.

Book Demonstration of an Active Quantum Key Distribution Network

Download or read book Demonstration of an Active Quantum Key Distribution Network written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We previously demonstrated a high speed, point to point, quantum key distribution (QKD) system with polarization coding over a fiber link, in which the resulting cryptographic keys were used for one-time pad encryption of real time video signals. In this work, we extend the technology to a three-node active QKD network - one Alice and two Bobs. A QKD network allows multiple users to generate and share secure quantum keys. In comparison with a passive QKD network, nodes in an active network can actively select a destination as a communication partner and therefore, its sifted-key rate can remain at a speed almost as high as that in the point-to-point QKD. We demonstrate our three-node QKD network in the context of a QKD secured real-time video surveillance system. In principle, the technologies for the three-node network are extendable to multi-node networks easily. In this paper, we report our experiments, including the techniques for timing alignment and polarization recovery during switching, and discuss the network architecture and its expandability to multi-node networks.

Book Applied Quantum Cryptography

Download or read book Applied Quantum Cryptography written by Christian Kollmitzer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the quantum properties of single photons to exchange binary keys between two partners for subsequent encryption of secret data is an absolutely novel te- nology. Only a few years ago quantum cryptography – or better Quantum Key Distribution – was the domain of basic research laboratories at universities. But during the last few years things changed. Quantum Key Distribution or QKD left the laboratories and was picked up by more practical-oriented teams that worked hard to develop a practically applicable technology out of the astonishing results of basic research. One major milestone toward a QKD technology was a large research and dev- opment project funded by the European Commission that aimed at combining qu- tum physics with complementary technologies that are necessary to create a tech- cal solution: electronics, software, and network components were added within the project SECOQC (Development of a Global Network for Secure Communication based on Quantum Cryptography) that teamed up all expertise on European level to get a technology for future cryptography.

Book Secure Multi party Communication with Quantum Key Distribution Managed by Trusted Authority

Download or read book Secure Multi party Communication with Quantum Key Distribution Managed by Trusted Authority written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques and tools for implementing protocols for secure multi-party communication after quantum key distribution ("QKD") are described herein. In example implementations, a trusted authority facilitates secure communication between multiple user devices. The trusted authority distributes different quantum keys by QKD under trust relationships with different users. The trusted authority determines combination keys using the quantum keys and makes the combination keys available for distribution (e.g., for non-secret distribution over a public channel). The combination keys facilitate secure communication between two user devices even in the absence of QKD between the two user devices. With the protocols, benefits of QKD are extended to multi-party communication scenarios. In addition, the protocols can retain benefit of QKD even when a trusted authority is offline or a large group seeks to establish secure communication within the group.

Book High Rate High Dimensional Quantum Key Distribution Systems

Download or read book High Rate High Dimensional Quantum Key Distribution Systems written by Nurul T. Islam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a broad research program on quantum communication. Here, a cryptographic key is exchanged by two parties using quantum states of light and the security of the system arises from the fundamental properties of quantum mechanics. The author developed new communication protocols using high-dimensional quantum states so that more than one classical bit is transferred by each photon. This approach helps circumvent some of the non-ideal properties of the experimental system, enabling record key rates on metropolitan distance scales. Another important aspect of the work is the encoding of the key on high-dimensional phase-randomized weak coherent states, combined with so-called decoy states to thwart a class of possible attacks on the system. The experiments are backed up by a rigorous security analysis of the system, which accounts for all known device non-idealities. The author goes on to demonstrate a scalable approach for increasing the dimension of the quantum states, and considers attacks on the system that use optimal quantum cloning techniques. This thesis captures the current state-of-the-art of the field of quantum communication in laboratory systems, and demonstrates that phase-randomized weak coherent states have application beyond quantum communication.

Book Quantum Communication Networks

Download or read book Quantum Communication Networks written by Riccardo Bassoli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a tutorial on quantum communication networks. The authors discuss current paradigm shifts in communication networks that are needed to add computing and storage to the simple transport ideas of prevailing networks. They show how these ‘softwarized’ solutions break new grounds to reduce latency and increase resilience. The authors discuss how even though these solutions have inherent problems due to introduced computing latency and energy consumption, the problems can be solved by hybrid classical-quantum communication networks. The book brings together quantum networking, quantum information theory, quantum computing, and quantum simulation.
