Schlager's Land Use Plan Design Model provides the linear formulation of the problem, Goal Programming is used to create alternatives, and Brown and Kirby's Measures of Urban Performance serve to evaluate the alternatives. Resource Planning and Management networks are used throughout to represent the models and alternatives. A prototype community of 40,000 is used as an example. Based on the 1975 land use statistics, goals, and priorities, a 1980 land use plan is formulated. The Urban Performance Model distributes the population on a socio-economic coordinate system so that the new land use plan can be compared with the present allocation. The computational results show that the residents of the community may gain slightly in Metropolitan Opportunity at the expense of Neighborhood Quality if the present set of goals and their priorities are followed. It is proposed that the integrated methodology be used by small community planners, as well as those working for large municipalities, to create optimal alternatives under the given set of goals and priorities, and to measure the effects of changing goals and priorities upon urban attributes.

After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book excerpt: This book proposes a method to solve land use problems, and has made some significant contributions to the land use analysis and optimization study fields. Firstly, three spatio-temporal logit models for land use change analysis, namely, geographically and temporally weighted logit model (GTWLM), spatio-temporal panel logit model (ST-PLM) and generalized spatio-temporal logit model (GSTLM), are proposed. GTWLM, which considers spatio-temporal non-stationarity, includes temporal data in a spatio-temporal framework by proposing a spatiotemporal distance. ST-PLM incorporates the spatio-temporal correlation and individual effect in one model. By integrating GTWLM and ST-PLM, the GSTLM explores spatio-temporal non-stationarity and correlations simultaneously, whilst considering their individual effects to construct an integrated model. Secondly, a MOO-based two-level spatial planning of land use is proposed. The spatial planning aims at managing and coordinating the land use at different geographic extents and involves spatial layouts and structures of land use at different levels. In spatial planning, GIS and Remote Sensing are used to evaluate, analyze, and measure environmental, economic and social issues. The quantitative relationships between these objectives and spatial land use allocation are then used as rules in the MOO process to simulate environmental conditions under different spatial land use allocation scenarios. The book features a case study of Shenzhen city, the most important Special Economic Zone in China. This book will be of interest to academics and professionals in the fields of urban planning, land resource management, remote sensing and geographic information systems.
