Book Hidden History of Maritime New Jersey

Download or read book Hidden History of Maritime New Jersey written by Stephen D. Nagiewicz and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Weaves exciting tales with historical and diving facts, peppered with antique illustrations of ships and photographs of their remains” (Courier-Post). An estimated three thousand shipwrecks lie off the coast of New Jersey—but these icy waters hold more mysteries than sunken hulls. Ancient arrowheads found on the shoreline of Sandy Hook reveal Native American settlement before the land was flooded by melting glaciers. In 1854, 240 passengers of the New Era clipper ship met their fate off Deal Beach. Nobody knows what happened to two hydrogen bombs the United States Air Force lost near Atlantic City in 1957. Lessons from such tragic wrecks and dangerous missteps urged the development of safer ships and the US Coast Guard. Captain Stephen D. Nagiewicz uncovers curious tales of storms, heroism and oddities from New Jersey’s maritime past. Includes photos “Densely packed with information, from scuba diving basics to a look through the centuries at New Jersey history, via the ships that found their way to sandy depths.”—Press of Atlantic City “Capt. Steve Nagiewicz of Brick has come out with a book . . . that should be in every angler’s bookcase . . . There’s one fascinating account after another.” —The Star-Ledger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 winner of Non-fiction popular category: New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance The Mullica Valley estuary and its watershed, formed over the last 10,000 years, are among the cleanest estuaries along the east coast of the United States. This 365,000-acre ecosystem benefits from a combination of protected watershed, low human population density, and general lack of extensive development. In Beneath the Surface, marine scientist Ken Able helps the reader penetrate the surface and gain insights into the kinds of habitats, animals, and plants that live there. Readers will gain a better understanding of the importance of these shallow waters; how the amount of salt in the water determines where animals and plants are found in estuaries; the day-night, seasonal, and annual variation in their occurrence; and how change is occurring as the result of climate variation. Throughout the book are insightful sidebars telling intimate stories of where various animals came from and where they are going as they travel through the estuary on their way to and from other portions of the east coast. Beneath the Surface emphasizes the kinds and importance of the animals and plants that live beneath the surface of this unique ecosystem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Pierce tells the vivid story of smugglers turned privateers after the Revolutionary War broke out. He recounts from many sources tales of ships and men who fought and, although outnumbered and outgunned, still played havoc with British shipping. He tells also of the profiteering that went hand in hand with the privateering of the war years. From the Mullica River to Cape May stretched the woodlands and the inlets that harbored smugglers. Stealthy and dangerous though their activities were, the smugglers were not outcasts. They were looked upon with indulgence by many respectable citizens of the day. As bitterness toward the mother country mounted, smugglers were encouraged and actively supported in their operation agains the Crown. The Jersey inns and taverns emerged as the "cradles of revolt" in the years immediately preceding the Revolution. In them were planned and fostered many intrigues and acts of violence that played important parts behind the scenes of military and official action. A number of these inns and taverns are still in active use today and are depicted in the illustrations. Smugglers' Woods deals with smugglers, privateers, patriots, and loyalists to give an exciting account of the tensions and conflicts that gripped pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary New Jersey.
