Book Ecology and Population Dynamics of Mule Deer in the Eastern Sierra Nevada California

Download or read book Ecology and Population Dynamics of Mule Deer in the Eastern Sierra Nevada California written by Thomas Edward Kucera and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migratory behavior of Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) wintering on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, Inyo and Mono counties, was studied from January 1984 to November 1987. Radio-telemetry indicated no differences between years in timing of migration from the winter range, although generally females proceeded males. Upon leaving the winter range, deer moved to spring holding areas on the east slope at higher elevations. There were no year or sex differences in leaving spring holding areas for summer ranges. Summer ranges were mainly on the western slope. Summer home ranges of males were at higher elevations, nearer water, and on steeper slopes than those of females. Fill migration was influenced by snowstorms, particularly in males. Few opportunities for habitat improvement exist on either summer or winter range. Antlerless harvests of deer during periods of population growth can dampen fluctuations in animal numbers caused by variable rainfall.

Book Population Dynamics of Rocky Mountain Elk and Mule Deer

Download or read book Population Dynamics of Rocky Mountain Elk and Mule Deer written by Jeffrey A. Manning and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I investigated the dynamics of sympatric elk and mule deer populations across central and southern Idaho to: 1) estimate the effects of density dependence, interspecific interactions, forage, weather, and predation and 2) develop a predictive, stochastic simulation model that integrates both species with estimated coefficients for each factor. I used estimates of annual abundance from 1990-2003, when mule deer were in decline, elk populations fluctuated, and wolf abundance steadily increased. I tested theories of density-dependent habitat selection, evaluated the relative importance of factors on population growth of each species, and used the simulation model to predict responses to simulated changes in factors.

Book Development of an Innovative Statewide Population Monitoring Program for Mule Deer

Download or read book Development of an Innovative Statewide Population Monitoring Program for Mule Deer written by Heather H. Bernales and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring population trend and estimating vital demographic parameters are essential for effective management of a mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population. Because of financial constraints, many wildlife agencies use computer models to obtain indirect indices of population size and trend as an alternative to annual field-based estimates of population size. These models are based primarily on herd composition counts and harvest rates from hunter-harvest surveys, and are rarely field validated. I developed an alternative method for monitoring population dynamics of wintering populations of mule deer. I designed a hybrid monitoring program that combined annual vital rate monitoring to track changes in population growth rate with a field-based approach for estimating population abundance. The program allocated resources optimally towards the most critical components of mule deer population dynamics, and consisted of 4 field surveys: annual monitoring of age ratios, overwinter fawn survival, and annual doe survival, with field-based estimates of population size only once every 4 years. Surveys were conducted from 2006 to 2008 in Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 2, Utah, and cost $29,298 per year, prorated over 4 years. Unfortunately, financial constraints prohibit the implementation of this monitoring program in every WMU in Utah. Instead, the program can be implemented in select WMUs throughout the state, with survival data collected in these core units, providing estimates for nearby satellite units. To establish core-satellite unit pairs, I developed a proxy method for determining correlation in survival rates between core and satellite units using model-simulated estimates. I demonstrated this core-satellite method using WMU 2 as a core and WMU 3, an adjacent unit, as a satellite. Finally, I compared a multiple data sources (MDS) model with a herd composition-based population model, POP-II. The MDS model better approximated observed data, and provided statistical rigor. Overall, the hybrid program was less costly and provided more precise estimates of population trend than could be achieved with a monitoring program focused on abundance alone, and was more defensible than herd composition monitoring. After establishing correlations in doe and fawn survival between core and satellite units, data collected in core units via the hybrid program could then be used to model the mule deer population dynamics of other units using MDS modeling procedures. This combined approach could be an effective statewide program for monitoring mule deer populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easily the most common of AmericaOs large wildlife species, white-tailed deer are often referred to as overabundant. But when does a species cross the threshold from common to overpopulated? William McShea and his colleagues explore every aspect of the issue in The Science of Overabundance, dismissing widely held lore and provide solid information on this perplexing problem.

Book Ecology and Management of Black tailed and Mule Deer of North America

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Black tailed and Mule Deer of North America written by James R. Heffelfinger and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black-tailed and mule deer represent one of the largest distributions of mammals in North America and are symbols of the wide-open American West. Each chapter in this book was authored by the world’s leading experts on that topic. Both editors, James R. Heffelfinger and Paul R. Krausman, are widely published in the popular and scientific press and recipients of the O. C. Wallmo Award, given every two years to a leading black-tailed and mule deer expert who has made significant contributions to the conservation of this species. In addition, Heffelfinger has chaired the Mule Deer Working Group sponsored by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies for more than 15 years. This working group consists of the leading black-tailed and mule deer experts from each of 24 states, provinces, and territories in western North America, putting them at the forefront of all conservation and much of the research on this species. The book represents all current knowledge available on these deer, including how changing conditions such as fires, habitat alteration and loss, disease, climate change, socio-economic forces, energy development, and other aspects are influencing their distribution and abundance now and into the future. It takes a completely fresh look at all chapter topics. The revisions of distribution, taxonomy, evolution, behavior, and new and exciting work being done in deer nutrition, migration and movements, diseases, predation, and human dimensions are all assembled in this volume. This book will instantly become the foundation for the latest information and management strategies to be implemented on the ground by practitioners and to inform the public. Although this book is about deer, the topics discussed influence most terrestrial wildlife worldwide, and the basic concepts in many of the chapters are applicable to other species.
