Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in the case of an event as well-known as World War II, it is still possible to find a hidden gem that many people have never heard of. In the case of this book, that little gem is the pre-fabricated harbor built and designed by the British for the express purpose of supporting the Allied invasion of France on June 6, 1944. It was known as Mulberry, and the story surrounding its evolution from a controversial and often ridiculed idea into a controversial and often ridiculed maritime fact is as entertaining as it is educational.

Book The Mulberry Tree

Download or read book The Mulberry Tree written by Allison Rushby and published by Candlewick Press (MA). This book was released on 2020 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ten-year-old Immy and her family have run away from their storm cloud of problems to a tiny village in Cambridgeshire, England, where her depressed physician father can take a sabbatical and get back on his feet. Luckily, they find an adorable thatched cottage to begin a new life in. But their new home comes with one downside: in the backyard, there is an ancient, dark, and fierce-looking mulberry tree that has ceased bearing any fruit. There's a legend that the towering tree steals away girls who live in the cottage on the eve of their eleventh birthday, and villagers even cross the street when they pass by the house. Of course, Immy thinks this is all ridiculous. But then she starts to hear a strange song in her head."--Provided by publisher.

Book Project Mulberry

Download or read book Project Mulberry written by Linda Sue Park and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this contemporary novel, Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park delivers a funny, lively story that illuminates both the process of writing a novel and the meaning of growing up American. "A rich work that treats serious issues with warmth, respect, and a good deal of humor" (Kirkus starred review). Perfect for both independent reading and classroom sharing. Julia Song and her friend Patrick would love to win a blue ribbon, maybe even two, at the state fair. They’ve always done projects together, and they work well as a team. This time, though, they’re having trouble coming up with just the right project. Then Julia’s mother offers a suggestion: They can raise silkworms, as she did when she was a girl in Korea. Patrick thinks it’s a great idea. Of course there are obstacles—for example, where will they get mulberry leaves, the only thing silkworms eat?—but nothing they can’t handle. Julia isn’t so sure. The club where kids do their projects is all about traditional American stuff, and raising silkworms just doesn’t fit in. Moreover, the author, Ms. Park, seems determined to make Julia’s life as complicated as possible, no matter how hard Julia tries to talk her out of it.

Book excerpt: Mulberry (Morus spp.) is an important horticultural plant in the sericulture industry. It belongs to the family Moraceae. The leaf of mulberry is used to feed the silkworm Bombyx mori L. It is also used as a fodder. Due to its economic and agricultural importance, mulberry is cultivated in many parts of the world. An estimated 60% of the total cost of silk cocoon production is for production and maintenance of mulberry plants. Therefore, much attention is needed to improve the quality and quantity of mulberry leaves. It is vital to increase the production of superior quality mulberry leaves with high nutritive value for the sericulture industry. Although a lot of research is going on in mulberry, very little effort has been made to compile the results of this research in a single book. This book provides an update of recent research works going on in this plant. It describes the taxonomy, conservation of germplasm, genetic diversity of various mulberry species, application of breeding techniques to improve the quality of mulberry, in vitro conservation, application of tissue culture techniques to improve mulberry species, production of haploids and triploids in mulberry and improvement of abiotic stress adaptive traits in mulberry with relevance to adaptiveness to global warming.

Download or read book Mulberry written by Na Do-hyang and published by Literature Translation Institute of Korea. This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprisingly little has been written about “Mulberry” (1925), a classic Na Do-hyang story that was also made into a cult film in 1986. Exploring one of the recurring themes of Korean fiction from this period, that of the financially incompetent husband and sexually exploited wife, it also provides one of the first glimpses of women’s agency in modern Korean literature. While the sex work premise is hardly progressive, the views on independence and sexual ownership expressed by the female protagonist are radically assertive for the time. As it is so often with Na Do-hyang, the intent is not to uplift or depress, but rather to offer impartial commentary; hard as it may be to imagine for modern readers, his characters are not so much exaggerated as faithfully drawn from the extreme hardship many of their contemporaries suffered.

Book excerpt: Since antiquity, few trees have had a greater impact on the world’s cultures and economies than the mulberry. The sole food of the silkworm, the leaves of the mulberry brought prosperity not only to ancient China, but to all nations that learned the art of silk production. Mulberry bark was used to make the first paper, and the succulent, blood-red fruit of the black mulberry has inspired poets from Ovid to Shakespeare. The medicinal properties of all parts of the tree have been known for millennia, making it a tree of choice for medieval monastery gardens, while its anti-diabetic effects are opening exciting avenues of research today. This sumptuously illustrated book tells the remarkable story of the mulberry tree and its migrations from China and Central Asia to almost every continent of the globe. It will appeal to all who wish to know more of the rich—and often juicy—history of this emblematic tree.

Book excerpt: This WWII history chronicles the remarkable engineering achievement that kept vital supplies flowing to Allied forces after D-Day. In the planning stages of the Normandy invasion, Allied strategists correctly anticipated that the Germans would deny, either by destruction or dogged defense, the vital Channel ports in the aftermath of D-Day. If the invading armies could not be kept resupplied, Operation Overlord would fail. The only solution was to design, build, transport and install two massive artificial harbors. Code Name Mulberry tells the story of this highly ambitious scheme from the initial planning stage to its successful execution on the field of battle. Told in clear, accessible prose, the historical narrative is amply supported with photographs, diagrams and tables, which vividly demonstrate the scale of this great venture.

Book excerpt: From the missions strategist behind "The 10/40 Window" In 1990, Luis Bush helped change modern missions by introducing the concept of the 10/40 window, a geographic region where large, dense populations of people suffered severe poverty and limited access to the gospel—essentially shining a light on the world’s greatest need. Now, after decades spent serving in global missions mobilization, Luis has a unique perspective on what God is doing around the world. Though statistics and maps can be a great place to start, The Yes Effect reveals that true transformation begins when we restart our hearts—getting in sync with God’s tenderness toward the oppressed and regaining compassion for the lost. In The Yes Effect, Dr. Bush shares his own story as well as inspiring stories of individuals and organizations around the world whose acts of love and justice are bringing hope and transformation in places of misery and immobility. From the orphans weeping in Bihar, India, to garbage collectors in Cairo, Egypt—from the single mom trying to find a way to feed her family as a Syrian refugee, to the church cowering under government control—God is at work in surprising places. And this transformation is sparked when ordinary people say yes to God, igniting an ongoing global chain reaction that sees glimpses God’s kingdom springing up all over the world. Ultimately, The Yes Effect will give you an encouraging window into worldwide efforts to spread the gospel, and it will inspire you to give God your “yes”—and like so many others before you, become part of God’s global story of transformation.
