Book The Life of Dr Samuel A Mudd

Download or read book The Life of Dr Samuel A Mudd written by Nettie Mudd and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1955-01-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Samuel Mudd have prior knowledge of the impending assassination of Abraham Lincoln and willingly provide aid to John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln's murder? Historians are still divided over this issue nearly 140 years later. In 1906, Nettie Mudd published this passionate plea for her father's innocence. It includes testimony from Mudd's trial and letters written to and by him from Fort Jefferson, where he was imprisoned until 1869. Though President Andrew Johnson pardoned Mudd, the family continued to try to get the conviction overturned. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan were both sympathetic to the cause but claimed no authority in the matter. The Supreme Court has refused to hear the case. Not only is this book a well-reasoned case for Mudd's acquittal, it's a fascinating look into the Mudd family and the early attempts to clear his name. The letters from Mudd to his adored wife are very revealing of at least a part of Mudd's character. For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample. This edition is Expanded, Annotated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Written by a critically-acclaimed natural-history author • Shares author’s fun journey to understanding clouds • Written for the curious—but non-science—minded Author Maria Mudd Ruth fell in love with clouds the same way she stumbles into most passions: madly and unexpectedly. A Sideways Look at Clouds is the story of her quite accidental infatuation with and education about the clouds above. When she moved to the soggy Northwest a decade ago, Maria assumed that locals would know everything there was to know about clouds, in the same way they talk about salmon, tides, and the Seahawks. Yet in her first two years of living in Olympia, Washington, she never heard anyone talk about clouds—only the rain. Puzzled by this lack of cloud savvy, she decided to create a 10-question online survey and sent it to everyone she knew. Her sample size of 67 people included men and women, new friends in Olympia, family on the East Coast, outdoorsy and indoorsy types, professional scientists, and liberal arts majors like herself. The results showed that while people knew a little bit about clouds, most were like her—they had a hard time identifying clouds or remembering their names. As adults, they had lost their curiosity and sense of wonder about clouds and were, essentially, not in the habit of looking up. A Sideways Look at Clouds acknowledges the challenges of understanding clouds and so uses a very steep and bumpy learning curve—the author’s—as its plot line. The book is structured around the ten words used in most definitions of a cloud: “a visible mass of water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere above the earth.” A captivating story teller, Maria blends science, wonder, and humor to take the scenic route through the clouds and encourages readers to chart their own rambling, idiosyncratic course.

Book The Slaves of Dr Samuel A Mudd

Download or read book The Slaves of Dr Samuel A Mudd written by Robert K. Summers and published by Robert Summers. This book was released on 2024-09-21 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Samuel A. Mudd was a Southern Maryland country doctor, tobacco farmer, and slave owner who was found guilty in the 1865 Lincoln assassination trial, and sentenced to life in prison. He was pardoned after four years, in large part for saving many lives during a terrible yellow fever epidemic at the prison. The book begins with the story of Dr. Mudd's ancestors who had all owned slaves, beginning with his great-great-great-great-grandfather Thomas Mudd who came to America from England around 1680. It describes what slavery was like in Southern Maryland in Dr. Mudd's time, how local newspapers carried ads for buying and selling slaves, how some escaped to freedom in Washington, D.C., and how some enlisted to fight in the Union Army. It tells about the lives of Dr. Mudd's own nine slaves, including a 1929 interview of one of Dr. Mudd's former slaves who tells how she prepared breakfast for John Wilkes Booth the morning after the assassination. The book includes the testimony some of Dr. Mudd's slaves gave at the Lincoln assassination trial. Some testified for him; others against him. Following the trial, Dr. Mudd was sent to the Fort Jefferson military prison, located on an island in the Gulf of Mexico. Soon after arriving there, he learned that black Union soldiers would be arriving to garrison the fort. Afraid of his treatment by the soldiers, many of whom were former slaves, he tried to stow away on a visiting supply ship, but was discovered, and thrown into the fort's dungeon for several months. In 1867 there was a terrible yellow fever epidemic at Fort Jefferson. When the fort’s military physician died at the start of the epidemic, Dr. Mudd was asked to take over his duties, and did so. Many soldiers survived the epidemic only because of Dr. Mudd’s tireless work. Towards the end of the epidemic, Dr. Mudd himself contracted yellow fever and almost died. President Johnson pardoned Dr. Mudd shortly before he left office in 1869, citing his heroic work during the epidemic. After the pardon, Dr. Mudd returned home to his family and farm where he resumed his work as a physician and farmer until passing away in 1883 at the age of 49. Readers may also be interested in the author's complete biography of Dr. Mudd entitled The Assassin's Doctor, available at online bookstores worldwide.
