Book excerpt: When Ra-me, the Traveling Troubadour, is invited to attend the christening celebration of Fair Haven Village’s newest ship, he doesn’t know it will turn into a dangerous adventure. Lured to the village by the promise of a bag of gold and the sighting of a real, live mermaid, he joyfully accepts the invitation to play his piccolo and lute and lead the festival parade. When Merrylin, the mermaid, fails to break the bottle of sparkling water at the christening, a curse in the form of black clouds threaten, and a storm descends. The black clouds hide the arrival of Mudcat’s pirate ship, The Pirate’s Revenge. The sea god, Neptune, who brought the curse, must be appeased. When Captain Skip Jack finally broke the bottle, sharing half of its contents with the Neptune, the curse was lifted. But during the darkness, Mudcat the Pirate kidnapped the festival princess, Miss Lulu Belle, and sailed away. Ra-me is forced to go with the Captain to help find and rescue Lulu Belle. The pirate ship has sailed to the far coastline where many overhangs shelter hidden coves and caves. But the newly-christened ship, Good Ship Lightning Bolt, sails quickly in pursuit. When Ra-me finds Mudcat the Pirate, he must try to compose a siren’s song to make the pirate give up. His lute must play a magic tune. The plot takes a twist, and there is a surprise ending to this adventure.

Book excerpt: A touching biography of the beloved Pittsburgh Pirate Willie "Pops" Stargell, this life story documents the 21-year, Hall of Fame career of one of the most celebrated and revered players in the history of Major League Baseball. Beginning with his difficult childhood and revealing his encounters with fierce racial hostility while playing minor league ball in the south, this book goes on to show how Stargell became one of the most feared hitters in baseball, a perennial All Star and MVP candidate, and World Series hero. More than a slugging star, Stargell--a clubhouse leader who was revered for his bursting personality and "joie de vivre"--earned the affectionate nickname "Pops" during the 1979 season when he began handing out stars to teammates following a good play or game. The stars soon became a symbol of the unity on the Pirates team that went on to win the World Series. This biography also details his life following his playing days: Stargell's coaching career, his struggles with obesity and diabetes, and his lasting legacy that remains relevant to this day. This telling of a dearly loved man with a larger-than-life personality is a must read for any fan of baseball.

Book Pirates By the Numbers

Download or read book Pirates By the Numbers written by David Finoli and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the National League decided on June 22, 1932, to place numbers on the backs of uniforms to make it easier for fans to follow their favorite players, no one knew at the time just what a landmark decision it would turn out to be. In fact, when the Pittsburgh Pirates donned numbered jerseys eight days later against the St. Louis Cardinals at Forbes Field, the uniform numbers were so unimportant on the team’s list of priorities that it was second billing to the main event of that day: the first Ladies Day in Pirates history. The secondary event would turn out to be an iconic moment in baseball history, as players are now closely associated with their uniform numbers. For example, two Hall of Famers for the Pirates wore the number 21: Arky Vaughan and Roberto Clemente. Both ironically died young while trying to help others, and 21 has become the most sacred number in Steel City sports lore. Pirates by the Numbers tells the tales of these players and more in a format that will include the greatest players to wear a specific number, the worst, and the most unique. The book highlights the first players to wear particular numbers and how they performed in their inaugural games, the first to hit home runs, and the first pitchers to win games. You’ll also find a list by year of every player and the numbers he’s worn that fans have used to identify him over the past eighty-four years. The players of the Pittsburgh Pirates have worn eighty-one different numbers. This book tells each player’s stories in a unique and compelling way that every Pirates fan will love. Book The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs

Download or read book The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs written by Julia Bishop and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Spectator's Books of the Year 2012 'Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain For we've received orders for to sail for old England But we hope in a short while to see you again' One of the great English popular art forms, the folk song can be painful, satirical, erotic, dramatic, rueful or funny. They have thrived when sung on a whim to a handful of friends in a pub; they have bewitched generations of English composers who have set them for everything from solo violin to full orchestra; they are sung in concerts, festivals, weddings, funerals and with nobody to hear but the singer. This magical new collection brings together all the classic folk songs as well as many lesser-known discoveries, complete with music and annotations on their original sources and meaning. Published in cooperation with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, it is a worthy successor to Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L.Lloyd's original Penguin Book of English Folk Songs. 'Her keen eye did glitter like the bright stars by night The robe she was wearing was costly and white Her bare neck was shaded with her long raven hair And they called her pretty Susan, the pride of Kildare' In association with EFDSS, the English Folk Dance and Song Society

Book The Black Aces

Download or read book The Black Aces written by Jim Mudcat Grant and published by . This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the first half of the twentieth century, African-Americans were excluded from Organized Baseball. But their love of the game, and their desire to play could not be denied. Despite that ban, "blackball" was being played in just about every cow pasture and field available throughout the country. Black players criss-crossed the country in Negro League games and on barnstorming tours, bringing baseball to places where the Major Leagues never dreamed of going. Many gifted athletes never got the chance to compete in the Majors, until the door was finally opened in 1947 with the signing of Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby. Once given that chance to compete, African-Americans showed the country that they were deserving of the opportunity. Many became superstars, but, on the mound, only 13 African-Americans ever reached the magic plateau of twenty wins in a season. This book tells the story of those thirteen men and a few of their predecessors, the obstacles they faced, and the determination they showed to succeed. But it is a story about so much more than just baseball. Against the backdrop of their grit and determination, it reflects the story of all African-American baseball players through the creation of the Negro Leagues, the evolution of the game, and the parallel integration of baseball and America.

Book Swashbuckling Scoundrels

Download or read book Swashbuckling Scoundrels written by Arie Kaplan and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You might be a fan of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. But did you know that real-life pirates were even more daring and charismatic? For example, Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, reportedly kept a lit fuse under his hat, creating a frightening haze of smoke around his head. William Fly, convicted of piracy in 1726, had to show his executioner how to tie the noose that went around his neck at the gallows. Pirates are outlaws who commit crimes at sea. Throughout history they have attacked cargo-laden ships to pillage gold, silver, human slaves, and valuable foodstuffs. Twenty-first-century pirates take crews hostage and demand ransoms. Some even siphon off petroleum from tanker ships. The world of pirates is one of violence and economic desperation. Yet over the centuries, pirates have acquired a reputation as rugged adventurers and heroes. Novelists, playwrights, cartoonists, and screenwriters have created a wide range of tales showing pirates as noble and even lovable figures. Swashbuckling Scoundrels introduces readers to real-life pirates—medieval Viking raiders, Caribbean buccaneers, black pirates, female pirates, and modern-day pirates—as well as famous fictional characters such as Long John Silver and Mary "Jacky" Faber of the Bloody Jack series of novels. See how historical and fictional pirates compare and why we thrill to tales of daring outlaw pirates.

Book The Bucs

  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2016-04-01
  • ISBN : 1630760943

Download or read book The Bucs written by John McCollister and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bucs is the story of a baseball club. The word “story” is purposely used in lieu of the more common designation “history.” A baseball club rarely has a history in the strictest sense of the word. Instead, the record of its formation and growth more closely resembles a biography. Each club mirrors the character of those who nurtured its development and wore its uniforms. The Pittsburgh ball club is no exception. Each generation of Pirate fans has been blessed with its own pantheon of god-like heroes: Honus Wagner, Pie Traynor, Ralph Kiner, Bill Mazeroski, Roberto Clemente, and Wille Stargell. The Bucs shows how Pittsburgh lost the ʼ27 World Series to the Yankees in batting practice. It recalls the miracle of 1960 when Mazeroski electrified the nation with his Series-winning home run. The Bucs is a must for any baseball enthusiast.
