Book Mrs Fiske Her Views on Actors Acting and the Problems of Production Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mrs Fiske Her Views on Actors Acting and the Problems of Production Classic Reprint written by Alexander Woollcott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Fiske, Her Views on Actors, Acting, and the Problems of Production It was all very well for Grant Allen in his day to say that Hea'a'a was nothing more or less than the girl we take down to dinner in London nineteen times out of twenty. Cer tainly she was something more this time, for Tess of Ike d'urbervz'lles - not Hardy's Tess, perhaps, but ours - sat there, too. I was at supper with Hea'a'a and Tess and Becky Sharp, but surely that was Becky's red hair that could be glimpsed in the shadow of the big hat and voluminous veil. That erect figure, vital, alert, indefatigable, eloquently animate, surely that was Becky. There was something of Becky, also, in the mutinous, gleaming humor. Book Mrs Leslie Carter

Download or read book Mrs Leslie Carter written by Craig Clinton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born Caroline Louise Dudley, Mrs. Leslie Carter was destined to become one of America's principal turn-of-the century actresses. In 1889, a high profile divorce case labeled her an adulteress and sent her to the brink of poverty. With characteristic resilience, however, Mrs. Carter used infamy to her advantage. Retaining her married name as an act of revenge against her ex-husband, she approached David Belasco, one of the foremost playwright/directors of the day, and persuaded him to teach her the art of acting. So began one of theatre's most prolific partnerships. Not only did Belasco become Mrs. Carter's acting coach, he composed plays specifically as vehicles to showcase her particular talents. Although their relationship ruptured in 1906, Mrs. Carter continued to enjoy international renown. Weathering the changing times and methods of the early twentieth century, she persevered through stage, silent movies and vaudeville shows. This biography focuses particularly on Mrs. Carter's successful career and on her professional partnership with David Belasco. Spanning a period of radical transformation in American theatre, her career reflected--and endured--the artistic changes which occurred during the decades on either side of the century mark. Period photographs and theatrical art are included.

Book Interchangeable Parts

Download or read book Interchangeable Parts written by Victor Holtcamp and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Hollywood has long been called “The Dream Factory,” and theatrical entertainment more broadly has been called “The Industry,” the significance of these names has rarely been explored. There are in fact striking overlaps between industrial rhetoric and practice and the development of theatrical and cinematic techniques for rehearsal and performance. Interchangeable Parts examines the history of acting pedagogy and performance practice in the United States, and their debts to industrial organization and philosophy. Ranging from the late nineteenth century through the end of the twentieth, the book recontextualizes the history of theatrical technique in light of the embrace of industrialization in US culture and society. Victor Holtcamp explores the invocations of scientific and industrial rhetoric and philosophy in the founding of the first schools of acting, and echoes of that rhetoric in playwriting, production, and the cinema, as Hollywood in particular embraced this industrially infected model of acting. In their divergent approaches to performance, the major US acting teachers (Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Sanford Meisner) demonstrated strong rhetorical affinities for the language of industry, illustrating the pervasive presence of these industrial roots. The book narrates the story of how actors learned to learn to act, and what that process, for both stage and screen, owed to the interchangeable parts and mass production revolutions.
