Book excerpt: The story of Mr. Zuko was born in 1983, when Michel Faure was sunbathing on a beautiful beach in Maine with his two young daughters, Elisabeth and Isabelle. They asked him to tell them one of his wonderful stories. On the spot, Michel made up the story of Mr. Zuko, a kind old gentleman who loved balloons so much that he bought a new one every day and attached it to his house. One fine morning, he woke up to find that his house, thanks to the balloons, had taken flight!Back in Montreal, Michel wrote down his story and his friend Joyce Borenstein created delightful illustrations to accompany the text. In 1984 and in subsequent years, the book was offered to publishers in the United States and Canada. While some expressed interest in it, Mr. Zuko Takes Flight was never published. Then, in 2009, Disney released the movie UP. A major legal battle ensued that was resolved by an out-of-court settlement. This book was the object of the litigation. In 2014, Michel and Joyce decided it was important to share the story of Mr. Zuko as it was originally conceived. Mr. Zuko Takes Flight is the result of their creative talent and determination, proving that time has no effect on dreams. We hope you enjoy the story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tag along on this New York Times bestselling “witty, entertaining romp” (The New York Times Book Review) as Eric Winer travels the world, from Athens to Silicon Valley—and back through history, too—to show how creative genius flourishes in specific places at specific times. In this “intellectual odyssey, traveler’s diary, and comic novel all rolled into one” (Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness), acclaimed travel writer Weiner sets out to examine the connection between our surroundings and our most innovative ideas. A “superb travel guide: funny, knowledgeable, and self-deprecating” (The Washington Post), he explores the history of places like Vienna of 1900, Renaissance Florence, ancient Athens, Song Dynasty Hangzhou, and Silicon Valley to show how certain urban settings are conducive to ingenuity. With his trademark insightful humor, this “big-hearted humanist” (The Wall Street Journal) walks the same paths as the geniuses who flourished in these settings to see if the spirit of what inspired figures like Socrates, Michelangelo, and Leonardo remains. In these places, Weiner asks, “What was in the air, and can we bottle it?” “Fun and thought provoking” (Miami Herald), The Geography of Genius reevaluates the importance of culture in nurturing creativity and “offers a practical map for how we can all become a bit more inventive” (Adam Grant, author of Originals).

Book One Day in Bethlehem

Download or read book One Day in Bethlehem written by Johnny Steinberg and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single moment can change a life forever... A van full of men armed with AK47s is stopped by two policemen while driving through Bethlehem in the Free State. They open fire on the policemen and, from that moment, their lives are irrevocably changed. So too for Fusi Mofokeng, resident of Bethlehem, who was not at the scene of the crime but was the brother-in-law of one of the perpetrators. He is accused of being an accomplice and tried, sentenced and jailed. Nineteen years later, in 2011, Fusi is released into a world that has changed beyond recognition, a world in which his mother, father and brother have all died. Throughout his incarceration he fought for his release, appearing before the TRC, and schooling himself in law. Even today, he seeks a presidential pardon. It is to this life that award-winning author Jonny Steinberg turns his attention in One Day in Bethlehem. In examining the life and struggle of Fusi Mofokeng, Steinberg shines a searing light on the burden of the 'everyman' in his quest for justice. In doing so, he also captures a country as it violently sheds the skin of the past to emerge, blinking, into the modern era.

Book How I Paid for College

Download or read book How I Paid for College written by Marc Acito and published by Crown. This book was released on 2004-09-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deliciously funny romp of a novel about one overly theatrical and sexually confused New Jersey teenager’s larcenous quest for his acting school tuition It’s 1983 in Wallingford, New Jersey, a sleepy bedroom community outside of Manhattan. Seventeen-year-old Edward Zanni, a feckless Ferris Bueller–type, is Peter Panning his way through a carefree summer of magic and mischief. The fun comes to a halt, however, when Edward’s father remarries and refuses to pay for Edward to study acting at Juilliard. Edward’s truly in a bind. He’s ineligible for scholarships because his father earns too much. He’s unable to contact his mother because she’s somewhere in Peru trying to commune with Incan spirits. And, as a sure sign he’s destined for a life in the arts, Edward’s incapable of holding down a job. So he turns to his loyal (but immoral) misfit friends to help him steal the tuition money from his father, all the while practicing for his high school performance of Grease. Disguising themselves as nuns and priests, they merrily scheme their way through embezzlement, money laundering, identity theft, forgery, and blackmail. But, along the way, Edward also learns the value of friendship, hard work, and how you’re not really a man until you can beat up your father—metaphorically, that is. How I Paid for College is a farcical coming-of-age story that combines the first-person tone of David Sedaris with the byzantine plot twists of Armistead Maupin. It is a novel for anyone who has ever had a dream or a scheme, and it marks the introduction to an original and audacious talent.
