Book Mr Froude and Carlyle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mr Froude and Carlyle Classic Reprint written by DAVID. WILSON and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Froude and Carlyle As a rule the names of those who supplied new material are not now given; but as names must often be given, at least in notes, in the final work, those who supply information and desire their names to be with held should inform the author of their wishes. Names which he is expressly requested or which he can guess he is expected to withhold, shall of course never be mentioned. The author hopes that publicity will be given to his appeal for information by the courtesy of many editors. Many footnotes have been omitted, to lighten the book. Perhaps what remain are enough. The correction of proofs and the preparation of an index have perforce to be left to others, when half the convex world intrudes between the writer and his printers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nemesis of Froude: A Rejoinder to James Anthony Froudes My Relations With Carlyle As early as 1881 Mr. Froude, in a letter which appeared in the T {mes of May oth, alluded to reasons which he could not give without entering on a subject on which it is better to be silent, and added that he would be sorry if the difficulty of his task was increased by a demand for further explanations which I shall be very reluctant to give. He was at once challenged by Mrs. Alexander Carlyle in the T z'mes, to satisfy the curiosity he had awakened by his reference to hidden reasons and explanations. To this challenge he made no reply; but on the 20th of April, 1886, when he heard that Professor Charles Eliot Norton was about to publish the Early Letters of Carlyle. Book Thomas Carlyle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thomas Carlyle Classic Reprint written by Hector Carsewell Macpherson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle OF the writing of books on Carlyle there is no end. Why, then, it may pertinently be asked, add another stone to the Carlylean cairn? The reply is obvious. In a series dealing with famous Scotsmen, Carlyle has a rightful claim to a niche in the temple of Fame. While prominence has been given in the book to the Scottish side of Carlyle's life, the fact has not been lost sight of that Carlyle owed much to Germany; indeed, if we could imagine the spirit of a German philosopher inhabiting the body of a Covenanter of dyspeptic and sceptical tendencies, a good idea would be had of Thomas Carlyle. Needless to say, I have been largely indebted to the biography by Mr Froude, and to Carlyle's Remz'm'scences. Into the con troversy over Mr Froude's editorial conduct I have not entered. In the body of this work will be found a hitherto unpublished letter received by me some years ago, in which Mr Froude gives a vigorous pre sentment of his side of the controversy. After all has been said, the fact remains that Froude's portrait. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book My Relations with Carlyle Classic Reprint written by James Anthony Froude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Relations With Carlyle The history of the Notes is given on a subsequent page. As the style itself shows, they have received no literary revision; and none has been attempted by ourselves. We have corrected a few clerical errors; we have omitted a few passages, containing intimate reflections and recollections, unconnected with the point at issue; and two passages, dealing not with Mr. Carlyle but with certain business complications which arose out of the publication of his Memoirs, we have transferred in extenso to the Appendix. With the Notes we publish, by permission of Sir Herbert Stephen, a letter from Sir James Stephen to Mr. Froude, which was printed in 1886 for private circulation only, and in which reference is made to the above business matter. The letter is evidence which cannot be disputed as to Sir James Stephen's opinion of his cc-executor's conduct, throughout a difficult and most painful business, and it shows incidentally the complications which resulted from Mr. Carlyle's changes of purpose. Book Thomas Carlyle

Download or read book Thomas Carlyle written by James Anthony Froude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: A History of the First Forty Years of His Life, 1795-1835 Mr. Carlyle expressed a desire in his will that of him no biography should be written. I find the same reluctance in his Journal. No one, he said, was likely to understand a history, the secret of which was unknown to his closest friends. He hoped that his wishes would be respected. Partly to take the place of a biography of himself, and part ly for other reasons, he collected the letters of his wife-letters which covered the whole period of his life in London to the date of her death, when his own active work was finished. He prepared them for publication, adding notes and introductory explanations, as the last sacred duty which remained to him in the world. He intended it as a monument to a character of extreme beauty; while it would tell the public as much about himself as it could reasonably expect to learn. These letters he placed in my hands eleven years ago, with materials for an Introduction which he was himself unable to complete. He could do no more with it, he said. He could not make up his mind to direct positively the publication even of the letters themselves. He wished them to be published, but he left the decision to myself; and when I was reluctant to undertake the sole responsibility, he said that, if I was in doubt when the time came, I might consult his brother John and his friend Mr. Forster. Book Early Letters of Jane Welsh Carlyle

Download or read book Early Letters of Jane Welsh Carlyle written by David G. Ritchie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Letters of Jane Welsh Carlyle: Together With a Few of Later Years and Some of Thomas Carlyle It was in the beginning of last October that I first saw any of the following letters. Most of them are addressed to Eliza Stodart, my great-aunt. I knew of the existence of letters from Mrs. Carlyle to her, but until they came into the hands of my mother and myself I could not know that it would seem a duty to English literature to make them public. The desire to do so might have been overbalanced by other considerations, had not the private life of Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle been already so much exposed to the general gaze; but since the case has, so to speak, come before the court (whether rightly or wrongly I need not discuss), it is only fair that important evidence should not be withheld. It will be noticed that nearly four-fifths of these letters belong to the years before 1834, the date at which the letters published by Mr. Froude in Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle begin: so that here, for the first time, may be read an account, brief and yet abounding in detail, of the earlier years of Jane Welsh, from her fathers death till her marriage, and of the life at Craigenputtoch, as seen from her own point of view and described in her own words. I have, indeed, the less hesitation in publishing these letters, because of the pleasing light in which, on the whole, they show both Carlyle and his wife; and, in saying this, I would call attention to the fact, that all the letters to Eliza Stodart are printed without omissions. Book Early Letters of Thomas Carlyle

Download or read book Early Letters of Thomas Carlyle written by Charles Eliot Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Letters of Thomas Carlyle Mr. Carlyle was for many years, especially during his early manhood, an industrious letter-writer. A great many of his letters have been preserved and are in the possession of his niece, Mrs. Alexander Carlyle. It is at her desire that I have undertaken to edit a selection of them. "Express biography of me I had really rather that there should be none," said Carlyle in his Will, and a biography of him, correct at least if meagre, might perhaps have been gathered from his letters, his Reminiscences, and the Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle. Mr. Froude, however, thought otherwise, and has given to the public an "express biography" of him. The view of Mr. Carlyle's character presented in this biography has not approved itself to many of those who knew Carlyle best It may be a striking picture, but it is not a good portrait For the present, at least, it appears impracticable to prepare another formal biography. The peculiar style of Mr. Froude's performance, already in possession of the field, might perhaps put a portrait of Carlyle drawn by a hand more faithful to nature, and less skilled in fine artifices than his own, at a temporary disadvantage with the bulk of readers. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle, Vol. 1 of 2 Bow of Ulysses (the long bow of Ulysses it should have been), provoked numerous damaging replies, the most effective of which was 'mr. Froude's Negrophobia; or, Don Quixote as a Cook's Tourist, ' by Mr. N. D. Davis. His 'life and Letters of Erasmus' was subjected to fierce attacks for its blatant inaccuracy. Whatever he touched he twisted and transmogrified, and his 'life of Carlyle, ' which he considered of more permanent value than any other of his books, was his biggest blunder. His father bought up and burnt the greater part of the edition of his Shadows of the Clouds.' His 'nemesis of Faith was publicly burnt by William Sewell at Exeter College. It would have been well for all concerned had his Carlyle manuscripts been burnt before reaching the printer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Ignatius Collegian, 1901 Such was the case with Mr. Thomas Car lyle, the maker and breaker of heroes, the literary Knox of the nineteenth century. In the Reminiscences, edited by james Anthony Froude, the true Carlyle appears - the man who thought-that the world was going all wrong, and that he was destined to reform it, set it aright, as it were, by his counsels and admonitions illustrated by the examples of men like Cromwell, Frederick of Prussia, Mah'omet and Knox, whom he called heroes; the man, who for half a century, waged a war of cant with the hammer of Thor on cant itself; who saw in men only blockheads and fools, and in things only inanities and shams.
