Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory examination of the global impact of Emmanuel Macron's tumultuous presidency. A political novice leading a brand new party, in 2017 Emmanuel Macron swept away traditional political forces and emerged as president of France. Almost immediately he realized his task was not only to modernize his country but to save the EU and a crumbling international order. From the decline of NATO, to Russian interference, to the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) protestors, Macron's term unfolded against a backdrop of social conflict, clashing ambitions, and resurgent big-power rivalries. In The Last President of Europe, William Drozdiak tells with exclusive inside access the story of Macron's presidency and the political challenges the French leader continues to face. Macron has ridden a wild rollercoaster of success and failure: he has a unique relationship with Donald Trump, a close-up view of the decline of Angela Merkel, and is both the greatest beneficiary from, and victim of, the chaos of Brexit across the Channel. He is fighting his own populist insurrection in France at the same time as he is trying to defend a system of values that once represented the West but is now under assault from all sides. Together these challenges make Macron the most consequential French leader of modern times, and perhaps the last true champion of the European ideal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During one of his memorable speeches, President JFK declared, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." This speech marked the beginning of the Peace Corps program in the United States, which in turn led a young American to my small farming village of Agadji in Togo, West Africa. This young American sponsored me into the United States in June of 1989, a fulfillment in itself of my father's secretly held dream to see one of his children educated in an English-speaking Country, better yet in the United States of America. Education has always been very important to my father because he was denied that opportunity due to being an orphan at a very young age. He wished to attend school and become a lawyer or doctor, but instead, he was forced to become a farmer and eventually one of the best-known coffee growers in Togo. In June of 1999, I was able to invite my father to the United States for a year-long visit, during which I was able to enroll him in Kalamazoo Adult Education as another way to fulfill his dream of being a student. In October 2001, I invited my dear mother also to the United States for a year-long visit, giving both my wonderful parents a unique and unforgettable their FIRST plane ride experience. Travel along with me as I journey through a father and son's dream to a better tomorrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close to the Enemy is a seven-part television series, mostly set in a bomb-damaged London hotel in the aftermath of the Second World War. The drama follows intelligence officer Captain Callum Ferguson whose last task for the Army is to ensure that a captured German scientist, Dieter, starts working for the British RAF on urgently developing the jet engine. With the background of the emerging Cold War, it is clear to all that it's crucial for British national security that cutting-edge technology is made available to the armed forces as quickly as possible. Callum uses unorthodox methods in his attempt to convince Dieter to work with the British and eventually a friendship develops between the two men, but soon tensions arise as all is not as it seems. Over the course of the series, Callum encounters a number of other characters whose stories all intertwine. These characters include Victor, Callum's younger brother, struggling to deal with psychological trauma caused by his experience in the fighting; Harold, a Foreign Office official who reveals some startling truths about the outbreak of the war; Rachel, an enchanting Anglophile American engaged to his best friend; and Kathy, a tough young woman working for the War Crimes Unit, fighting to bring war criminals who escaped prosecution to justice. All these characters are trying to rebuild and move their lives forward in the aftermath of the war, a war that scarred them all so deeply. Close to the Enemy was first screened on BBC2 in November 2016 in a production by Little Island Productions. It starred Jim Sturgess, Freddie Highmore, Charlotte Riley, Phoebe Fox, August Diehl, Robert Glenister, Alfie Allen, Charity Wakefield, Angela Bassett, Lindsay Duncan and Alfred Molina.
Download or read book Commonwealth Caribbean Business Law written by Natalie Persadie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, Commonwealth Caribbean Business Law continues to break away from the traditional English approach of treating business law primarily as the law of contract and agency. Taking a panoramic view, it explores the foundation of various legal systems before examining areas of legal liability that affect business activities. These include areas such as contract law, tort law, criminal law, agency and internet law which present significant challenges confronting the business sector. The book primarily targets the development of business law principles in several Caribbean Commonwealth jurisdictions but, where appropriate, also embraces the jurisprudence of other Commonwealth nations, such as the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. It also explores the United States as a non-Commonwealth jurisdiction, given the increasing importance in the Caribbean of judicial pronouncements relating to internet law from this territory. Using excerpts from key judgments, the book allows students, particularly those with a non-legal background, to understand key legal principles for business as presented by the judiciary and draws parallels between legal theory and business practice.
