Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A postmodern Victorian novel about faith, knowledge and our inner needs. The late 1870s, the Kentish village of Downe. The villagers gather in church one rainy Sunday. Only Thomas Davies stays away. The eccentric loner, father of two and a grief-stricken widower, works as a gardener for the notorious naturalist, Charles Darwin. He shuns religion. But now Thomas needs answers. What should he believe in? And why should he continue to live? Why Peirene chose to publish this book: 'This is Peirene's most poetic book yet. A tale of God, grief and talking chickens. Like Dylan Thomas in Under Milk Wood, Carlson evokes the voices of an entire village, and, through them, the spirit of the age. This is no page-turner, but a story to be inhabited, to be savoured slowly.' Meike Ziervogel 'The translation is terrific and the author's grasp of England circa 1880 is utterly convincing.' Sally Vickers, Observer 'It's hard to believe this novel originated in another country. But it did, and the way Carlson shows us to ourselves should make us wonder.' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian 'Allow layers of meaning to emerge after you finish reading, and you may be rewarded.' Harriet Paterson, Tablet 'The collective consciousness in this novel is an amazing choir: Carlson makes the souls of Downe Parish sing.' Helsingin Sanomat 'Carlson writes beautifully, wisely and with effortless humour.' Suomen Kuvalehti LONGLISTED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL IMPAC DUBLIN LITERARY AWARD 2015 OBSERVER BEST HOLIDAY READS 2013

Book Why Does My Grandfather Charles Darwin Act So Strangely

Download or read book Why Does My Grandfather Charles Darwin Act So Strangely written by Les Landrum and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Why does my Grandfather, Charles Darwin, act so strangely?” asks Bernard Darwin. He notices that Baba, his grandfather, does strange things like make faces in the mirror, have pet earthworms, and daydream frequently. The cook and the gardener seem to find Mr. Darwin’s behavior worrisome—maybe he just needs something to keep himself busy. Bernard decides to find out why his grandfather acts so strangely. The story is fiction, but all the characters really lived and might have interacted as they do in the story (see annotated list of all characters at the end). It is a good introduction to the life of Charles Darwin for children of 8 or older but most adults, who may want to read the story with their children, will find out something they did not know about Darwin. You will learn about Darwin’s voyage around the world with Captain FitzRoy, the earthquake in Chile, the fossils in the Andes and Patagonia, and the eye-opening experience of visiting the Galapagos Islands that led Darwin to formulate his ideas about biological evolution. He explains to his grandson Natural Selection, the driving force of evolution, the Economy of Nature, the result of the fierce competition between organisms that are constantly under the pressure of natural selection, and why it is that he makes faces in the mirror. And they perform an experiment together on earthworms that really happened, using a piano played by Bernard’s grandmother.

Book Charles Darwin s The Origin of Species

Download or read book Charles Darwin s The Origin of Species written by David Amigoni and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume marks a new approach to a seminal work of the modern scientific imagination: Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species (1859). Darwin's central theory of natural selection neither originated nor could be contained, with the parameters of the natural sciences, but continues to shape and challenge our most basic assumptions about human social and political life. Several new readings, crossing the fields of history, literature, sociology, anthropology and history of science, demonstrate the complex position of the text within cultural debates past and present. Contributors examine the reception and rhetoric of the Origin and its influence on systems of classification, the nineteenth-century women's movement, literary culture (criticism and practice) and Hinduism in India. At the same time, a re-reading of Darwin and Malthus offers a constructive critique of our attempts to map the hybrid origins and influences of the text. This volume will be the ideal companion to Darwin's work for all students of literature, social and cultural history and history of science.

Book excerpt: Charles Darwin's words first appeared in print as a student at Christ's College, Cambridge in 1829, and in almost every subsequent year of his life he published essays, articles, letters to editors, or other brief works. These shorter publications contain a wealth of valuable material. They represent an important part of the Darwin visible to the Victorian public, alongside his ever present sense of humour, and reveal an even wider variety of his scientific interests and abilities, which continued to his final days. This book brings together all known shorter publications and printed items Darwin wrote during his lifetime, including his first and his last publications, and the first publication, with A. R. Wallace, of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. With over seventy newly discovered items, the book is fully edited and annotated, and contains original illustrations and a comprehensive bibliography.

Download or read book Darwin His Daughter and Human Evolution written by Randal Keynes and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-11-05 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a chest of drawers bequeathed by his grandmother, author Randal Keynes discovered the writing case of Charles and Emma Darwin’s beloved daughter Annie Darwin, who died at the age of ten. He also found the notes Darwin kept throughout Annie's illness, the eulogy he delivered at her funeral—and provocative new insights into Darwin’s views on nature, evolution, and the human condition. In Darwin, His Daughter & Human Evolution, Keynes shows that Darwin was not "a cold intellect with no place for love in his famous 'struggle for existence,' [but]...a man of uncommon warmth" (Scientific American). Creation: The True Story of Charles Darwin is now a major motion picture and the movie tie-in paperback is also available from Riverhead Books.

Book Charles Darwin

Download or read book Charles Darwin written by E. Janet Browne and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few lives of great men offer so much interest--and so many mysteries--as the life of Charles Darwin, the greatest figure of nineteenth-century science, whose ideas are still inspiring discoveries and controversies more than a hundred years after his death. Yet only now, with the publication of Voyaging, the first of two volumes that will constitute the definitive biography, do we have a truly vivid and comprehensive picture of Darwin as man and as scientist. Drawing upon much new material, supported by an unmatched acquaintance with both the intellectual setting and the voluminous sources, Janet Browne has at last been able to unravel the central enigma of Darwin's career: how did this amiable young gentleman, born into a prosperous provincial English family, grow into a thinker capable of challenging the most basic principles of religion and science? The dramatic story of Voyaging takes us from agonizing personal challenges to the exhilaration of discovery; we see a young, inquisitive Darwin gradually mature, shaping, refining, and finally setting forth the ideas that would at last fall upon the world like a thunderclap in The Origin of Species"--Back cover.
