Book excerpt: The second installment of the "Midwest Photographers Publication Project" ("MP3"), also produced in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), Chicago, presents the work of three emerging artists: Curtis Mann, John Opera, and Stacia Yeapanis. For his series "Modifications", Curtis Mann collects found photographs depicting conflicts in the Middle East and Northern Africa. He then bleaches and scratches the surface of the images, removing information to create new meanings from his source material. John Opera investigates the uncanny in nature. Moving between representation and geometric abstraction, his works reference historical notions of the sublime and landscape as well as modernist photography. Stacia Yeapanis's interest in modes of entertainment and hobbies has led her to explore the simulated-reality computer game "The Sims 2", and the craft of embroidery, as she stitches television screen captures of characters in states of distress.
Download or read book The Buffyverse Catalog written by Don Macnaughtan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-21 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliographic guide covers the “Buffyverse”—the fictional worlds of the acclaimed television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) and its spinoff Angel (1999–2004), as well as the original Buffy feature film of 1992. It is the largest and most inclusive work of its kind. The author organizes and describes both the original texts of the Buffyverse (episodes, DVDs, novels, comic books, games, and more) and the secondary materials created about the shows, including books, essays, articles, documentaries, dissertations, fan production and websites. This vast and diverse collection of information about these two seminal shows and their feature-film forebear provides an accessible, authoritative and comprehensive survey of the subject.

Book excerpt: Just as Aperture's classic Masters of Photography series introduces audiences to the work of established great photographers, this first in a planned series of three-volume boxed sets offers an affordable, beautifully produced introduction to three emerging talents: Kelli Connell, Justin Newhall and Brian Ulrich. Via digital manipulation, Kelli Connell uses a single individual to represent two sides of an evolving relationship, the self and the other. Justin Newhall has spent the past few years following the Lewis and Clark Trail through the Dakotas, Montana and beyond. His lyrical work focuses on the intersections of tourism, history and mythology. Brian Ulrich shoots in malls, grocery stores and warehouses, documenting the bounty of commercial goods available to consumers and the peculiar behavior it seems to bring out. From cathartic to catatonic, his shoppers may be caught up in fantasy or quite simply overwhelmed, but they are certainly familiar. This slipcased box set will include three volumes, each with 56 pages and 25 color images.

Book excerpt: At Dwell, we're staging a minor revolution. We think that it's possible to live in a house or apartment by a bold modern architect, to own furniture and products that are exceptionally well designed, and still be a regular human being. We think that good design is an integral part of real life. And that real life has been conspicuous by its absence in most design and architecture magazines.

Download or read book Cheese Wine and Bread written by Katie Quinn and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Open-hearted and buoyant, the book weaves together her hands-on experiences in Europe and introduces us to a rich cast of people who make, sell and care about these traditions.” —Jenny Linford, author of The Missing Ingredient In this delightful, full-color tour of France, England, and Italy, YouTube star Katie Quinn shares the stories and science behind everyone's fermented favorites—cheese, wine, and bread—along with classic recipes. Delicious staples of a great meal, bread, cheese, and wine develop their complex flavors through a process known as fermentation. Katie Quinn spent months as an apprentice with some of Europe’s most acclaimed experts to study the art and science of fermentation. Visiting grain fields, vineyards, and dairies, Katie brings the stories and science of these foods to the table, explains the process of each craft, and introduces the people behind them. What will keep readers glued to the book like a suspense novel is Katie's personal journey as an expat discovering herself abroad; Katie's vulnerability will turn readers into fans, and they'll finish the book feeling like they're her best friends, trusted with her innermost revelations. In England, Katie becomes a cheesemonger at Neal's Yard Dairy, London’s preeminent cheese shop—the beginning of a journey that takes her from a goat farm in rural Somerset to a nationwide search for innovating dairy gurus. In Italy, Katie offers an inside look at Italian winemaking with the Comellis at their family-owned vineyard in Northeast Italy and witnesses the diversity of vintners as she makes her way around Italy. In France, Katie meets the reigning queen of bread, Apollonia Poilâne of Paris' famed Poilâne Bakery, apprentices at boulangeries in Paris learning the ins and outs of sourdough, and travels the country to uncover the present and future of French bread. Part artisanal survey, part travelogue, and part cookbook, featuring watercolor illustrations and gorgeous photographs, Cheese, Wine, and Bread is an outstanding gastronomic tour for foodies, cooks, artisans, and armchair travelers alike.
