Download or read book Bedlam written by Greg Hollingshead and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary novel of three people caught up in the turmoil of the late eighteenth century, their lives intertwined in an age of war and revolution Bedlam's eighteenth-century London is a city teetering between darkness and light, struggling to find its way to a more just and humane future. But in its darkest corners, where noblemen, pickpockets, royalists, and republicans jostle one another for power and where corruption is all in a day's work, Greg Hollingshead finds humanity, truth, decency, and forgiveness. Conspiracies, plots, and paranoia sweep across England in the aftermath of the French Revolution, landing James Tilly Matthews in Bethlem Hospital, a notorious, crumbling home for the insane. Although he is clearly delusional, Matthews appears to be incarcerated for political reasons. Margaret, his beloved wife, spends years trying to free her often lucid husband, but she is repeatedly blocked by her chief adversary, John Haslam, Bethlem's apothecary and chief administrator. Haslam, torn between his conscience and a desire to further his career through studying his increasingly famous patient, becomes another puppet in a game governed by shifting rules and shadowy players. Enlivened with wit and intellectual daring and written in prose that resonates with time and place, Bedlam sweeps the reader into a strange yet somehow recognizable world. From the enduring love of Matthews and his wife, to the despair of Bethlem's inmates, to the moral agonies of John Haslam, Greg Hollingshead's eye for rendering the human condition has never been finer. This is a novel that pulses with insight and compassion, in which imagination bridges the chasms between fantasy and reality, love and hate, and loss and reconciliation.

Book Theories of Play and Postmodern Fiction

Download or read book Theories of Play and Postmodern Fiction written by Brian Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on developments in critical theory and postmodernist fiction, this study makes an important contribution to the appreciation of playforms in language, texts, and cultural practices. Tracing trajectories in theories of play and game, and with particular attention to the writings of Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Bakhtin, and Derrida, the author argues that the concept of play provides perspectives on language and communication processes useful both for analysis of literary texts and also for understanding the interactive nature of constructions of knowledge Exploring manifestations of game and play throughout the history of Western culture, from Plato to Pynchon, this study traces developments in 20th-century cultural and literary theory of ideas about play in the writings of Johan Huizinga, Roger Caillois, Jacques Ehrmann, Bernard Suits, James Hans, Mihai Spariosu and Robert Rawdon Wilson. The author emphasizes post-structuralist developments with specific attention to deconstruction and reception theory and argues that deconstruction makes the most significant recent contribution to play theory in its application to language and to literature The work also explores the modes and effects of playforms in particular examples of postmodernist fiction. With attention to major works from Thomas Pynchon (Gravity's Rainbow), John Barth (LETTERS , Robert Kroetsch (What the Crow Said ), Angela Carter (Nights at the Circus ) and Peter Carey (Illywhacker ), Edwards acknowledges and deconstructs such basic oppositions as play and seriousness, fiction and truth, difference and identity to explore the literature's cultural/political significance. Seeking to affirm the fiction's continuing social relevance, the readings presented in this book place play irresistibly at the heartland of language, meaning and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 87 poems included in the first (1956) edition of The Improved Binoculars were selected from the eight volumes the poet published in the first ten years of his career. The publication of the book -- simultaneously by The Ryerson Press (Canada), Migrant Books (England), and Jonathan Williams ( US ) -- did much to establish Layton as a major talent on the international poetry scene and prompted Robert Creeley to note: `Irving Layton may well be for the historian of Literature ... the First Great Canadian Poet.' What a pleasure to rediscover `The Bull Calf', `The Cold Green Element', `The Birth of Tragedy' and `To the Girls of my Graduating Class' and discover these poems are as vital as the day they were written.

Book Baudelaire Rimbaud and Verlaine

Download or read book Baudelaire Rimbaud and Verlaine written by Charles Baudelaire and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, for the first time, the work of three of Frances greatest poets has been published in a single volume: the sensual and passionate glow of Charles Baudelaire, the desperate intensity and challenge of Arthur Rimbaud, and the absinthe-tinted symbolist songs of Paul Verlaine. To bring the essence of these three giants of modern poetry to the American public, Joseph M. Bernstein, a noted interpreter and translator of French literature, has selected the most representative of their writings and presented them along with a biographical and critical introduction. "Not to know these three poets," he points out, "is to deprive oneself of a pleasure as rare as it is indispensable to any real understanding of the aims and direction of modern literature. The volume includes Arthur Symons' unabridged translation of Flowers of Evil and the Prose Poems of Baudelaire; Louise Varese's translation of Rimbaud's A Season in Hell and Prose Poems from "Illuminations"; J. Norman Cameron's translation of the verse from the Illuminations; and a representative selection from Verlaine's verse translated by Gertrude Hall and Arthur Symons

Download or read book Numinous Mirrors written by Robert Milton Ph.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numinous Mirrors is a short book of poetry reflecting ideas that cross the boundaries between nature and science; between comprehensible evidence and incomprehensible magic. When the traditional religious impressions of my youth were gradually replaced by the distinctive facts provided by university studies of history and science, I discovered that spirituality still resides within the realms of curiosity and discovery. I live today in an almost constant state of awe, wonder, and amazement -- as I skeptically ask questions and claim answers that lead to more questions. To live in a state of awe is spirituality. Rhetoric is what emerges in squabbles with experts Poetry is what emerges in quarrels with ones self These poems are an attempt to offer to myself partial illumination, contentment and surprise to a few of my ever-surfacing questions. Then inevitably, curiosity arrives once again to announce additional provisional questions followed by empirical evidence leading to still more contemplative resolutions. Like inhaling and exhaling the cycle of science continues to provide new life.
