Sven and Ariella are newlyweds who find their career paths leading them to Charlotte, North Carolina where Buford, Ariellas mysterious cousin and prankster is hiding under an alias. At the same time, Ariellas parents each find their own peculiar callings in the city. In their move to Charlotte, the parents are accompanied by some strange yet comical figures with ambitions of their own, one of whom is a career criminal with a dangerous past and who runs a secret organization. It is the "hooligan" with the criminal past that ultimately becomes the first victim of two murders. To add to the suspense, the police learn that they have been foiled and have the wrong suspect in custody. Later on, after the second murder takes place, the authorities are baffled in their efforts to determine if the two murders are in any way related. By a strange sequence of events, "prankster" Buford finds himself at the scenes of both murders. In the midst of these violent acts, there is also a mystery surrounding two large lizards. Buford finds he may very well have met his match and finally be forced to retire or maybe he has just found a new partner in pranksterdom and the woman of his dreams. Sven and Ariella provide commentary on the unfolding events but in the process, they reveal hypocrisies about themselves. Each have their own perspective Sven proclaims to be a devout man of faith but Ariella prides herself on being a nonbeliever. But it is Ariellas hysterically odd grandmother Annabelle, a kind of all-knowing oracle with the wisdom of the ages, who has connections everywhere and knows almost everyones secrets in this wild contemporary comedy/mystery.
Download or read book Truelove Trail written by Mary Shotwell and published by City Owl Press. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World traveler Tracy Bennett agrees to extend her stay in Waverly Lake beyond summer in the hopes of affording her girlfriends' trip—a three-month excursion in New Zealand! And well, Aunt Dee could use her help at Woodsman's Lodge, packing away summer items and prepping for the winter holiday crowd. So, she's stuck until Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, Ben Walker is drawn back to Waverly Lake after the death of the custodian to his parents' estate. He plans to work at Aunt Dee's for his stay and is surprised to learn his childhood best friend Tracy is also working at the lodge. Hesitant to tell anyone else in Waverly Lake who he truly is for fear the town will want him to fill his parents' shoes, he gives a false name and pretends not to know Tracy. While Tracy's questioning of the mysterious Ben escalates, Aunt Dorothy assigns them to her pet project—Lovetoberfest. The October event is set to match guests on three blind dates around town. Tracy and Ben are forced to test run and narrow down five proposed dates to the best three. As the two reluctantly go on match-making practice full of apple orchards, corn mazes, and acorn painting, Tracy can't help but be attracted to Ben. Their chemistry makes her question not only her trip overseas but her long-term future; yet she can't shake the feeling he's hiding something. Ben's (re)connection with Tracy is undeniable, and while the dates push them closer, he's running out of time to face his tragic past and tell Tracy they're not, in fact, strangers at all.

Download or read book Around Lake Norman written by Cindy Jacobs and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of industry and energy development around Mooresville, North Carolina tells the story of the early use of harnessing hydropower for the textile industry, and resulted in the creation of Lake Norman. The year 1957 brought change to Mooresville and southern Iredell County, and that change arrived in trucks. Big white ones flashed the logo of Burlington Industries, the new owners of the Mooresville Cotton Mills. Bright yellow ones from the Duke Power Company brought earth-moving machines to clear the Catawba River bottomland. That project, envisioned by James Buchanan Duke, Dr. Gill Wylie, and William States Lee Jr., had the end goal of harnessing the energy of the Catawba River to provide electricity for the textile industry in the Carolinas. Duke Power's plan for Cowans Ford Lake was the last piece of the network of hydroelectric stations, and the result was beautiful Lake Norman.

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
