Book In His Majesty s Service

Download or read book In His Majesty s Service written by Naomi Novik and published by Random House Digital, Inc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together in one volume, here are the first three novels in Naomi Novik’s New York Times bestselling Temeraire series, combining the gripping history of the Napoleonic era, the thrill of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern books, and the excitement of Patrick O’Brian’s seafaring adventures. In His Majesty’s Service also includes an exclusive original Temeraire short story. Capt. Will Laurence is serving with honor in the British Navy when his ship captures a French frigate harboring most a unusual cargo–an incalculably valuable dragon egg. When the egg hatches, Laurence unexpectedly becomes the master of the young dragon Temeraire and finds himself on an extraordinary journey that will shatter his orderly, respectable life and alter the course of his nation’s history. Thrust into England’s Aerial Corps, Laurence and Temeraire undergo rigorous training while staving off French forces intent on breaching British soil. But the pair has more than France to contend with when China learns that an imperial dragon intended for Napoleon–Temeraire himself– has fallen into British hands. The emperor summons the new pilot and his dragon to the Far East, a long voyage fraught with peril and intrigue. From England’s shores to China’s palaces, from the Silk Road’s outer limits to the embattled borders of Prussia and Poland, Laurence and Temeraire must defend their partnership and their country from powerful adversaries around the globe. But can they succeed against the massed forces of Bonaparte’s implacable army?

Book excerpt: His Majesty is written with two view points, that of a boy and of a man. I came to know Jesus as my Savior around the age of five. The poems within this book tell alot about my relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. My dad left home when I was five, and I heard the pastor say that God wants to be our Abba Father, which means Daddy God. In my heart, God became my Daddy that day, and has fathered me all of my days. When my earthly father passed away, I never felt Fatherless for a second and I know my Father will never leave me. This and other heart felt messages are contained within the writings of His Majesty. I pray that God will richly bless all who read these poems and that they will know that God truly loves all people. There is also a salvation message at the end of this book which I pray will help to lead many people to Jesus.

Book excerpt: Flee or Fight? You experience adversity. You know what it is like to endure hardship. You hold on, buckle down, and ride the wave of bad fortune, praying you will make it out alive. You just do what it takes to survive. But what if these trials had the raw potential to change your life? What if the challenges you face could propel you to the next level of faith and maturity? What if you were designed to thrive in adversity, not merely “get by?” John Bevere wants to take you on a journey to unlock your tenacity. As he recounts the stories of Jesus and John the Baptist, as well as those of many contemporary believers, he presents a powerful pattern: These pillars of faith do not just hang on and survive troubles. They look adversity in the face and stare it down. Armed with the truth in the Word and the power of prayer, you, too, can join the determined ranks of the army of God. Will you fight relentlessly? Learn today how to fight, never give up, and enjoy all God has for you. “John Bevere has a mandate on his life to serve the body of Christ. His desire to see everyone find and flourish in their God-given destiny is evident in his teachings. His love for Christ and deep revelation of the Word of God will have you pursuing the cause of Christ, relentlessly.” --Brian and Bobbie Houston, senior pastors, Hillsong Church

Download or read book His Majesty s Rebels written by David M. Luebke and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of rebellions in the small, impoverished Black Forest lordship of Hauenstein between 1725 and 1745 provide David Martin Luebke with evidence for a new and more nuanced view of peasant action and discourse on power and community. In the rebellions called the Salpeter Wars, the peasants of Hauenstein sought to curtail the expansion of centralizing bureaucratic powers that were eroding traditional local autonomies. They could not agree how best to resist and two factions emerged, the quarrels between them escalating finally into civil war. After twenty years of bloody feuding, several lawsuits, three Austrian military invasions, and half a dozen rebel attempts to engineer the personal involvement of the Emperor, the Salpeter Wars ended with the destruction of precisely those autonomies that Hauenstein's peasant elites had set out to defend. Luebke challenges the dominant paradigm on peasant rebellion which holds that social integration and political solidarity characterize the peasant village and structure its rebel activity. He argues for a concept of the peasant community flexible enough to accommodate the divisions characteristic of early modern peasant society. State building, combined with a long-term trend toward social stratification among peasants, rearranged patterns of mutual dependency between rulers and subjects in ways that often created factional rifts among the subjects. In His Majesty's Rebels Luebke elucidates the dynamics of peasant rebellions.
