Book Black Bloc White Riot

Download or read book Black Bloc White Riot written by A. K. Thompson and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you taking over, or are you taking orders? Are you going backwards, or are you going forwards? White riot—I wanna riot. White riot—a riot of my own. —The Clash, "White Riot" Ten years after the battle in Seattle sparked an historic struggle against the forces of multinational conglomeration and American imperialism, the anti-globalization generation is ready to reflect on a decade of organizing that changed the face of mass action around the globe. Scholar and activist AK Thompson revisits the struggles against globalization in Canada and the United States at the turn of the century, and he explores the connection between political violence and the white middle class. Equal parts sociological study and activist handbook, Black Bloc, White Riot engages with the key debates that arose in the anti-globalization movement over the course of the past decade: direct or mass action? Summit-hopping or local organizing? Pacifism or diversity of tactics? Drawing on movement literature, contemporary and critical theory, and practical investigations, Thompson outlines the effect of the anti-globalization movement on the white, middle-class kids who were swept up in it, and he considers how and why violence must once again become a central category of activist politics. AK Thompson is a writer and activist living and working in Toronto, Canada. Currently completing his PhD in sociology at York University, Thompson teaches social theory and serves on the editorial committee of Upping the Anti: A Journal of Theory and Action. His publications include Sociology for Changing the World: Social Movements/Social Research (Fernwood Publishing, 2006).

Download or read book Shutting Down the Streets written by Luis A. Fernandez and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, a wall was built in eastern Germany. Made of steel and cement blocks, topped with razor barbed wire, and reinforced with video monitors and movement sensors, this wall was not put up to protect a prison or a military base, but rather to guard a three-day meeting of the finance ministers of the Group of Eight (G8). The wall manifested a level of security that is increasingly commonplace at meetings regarding the global economy. The authors of Shutting Down the Streets have directly observed and participated in more than 20 mass actions against global in North America and Europe, beginning with the watershed 1999 WTO meetings in Seattle and including the 2007 G8 protests in Heiligendamm. Shutting Down the Streets is the first book to conceptualize the social control of dissent in the era of alterglobalization. Based on direct observation of more than 20 global summits, the book demonstrates that social control is not only global, but also preemptive, and that it relegates dissent to the realm of criminality. The charge is insurrection, but the accused have no weapons. The authors document in detail how social control forecloses the spaces through which social movements nurture the development of dissent and effect disruptive challenges.

Book The Unglobals

Download or read book The Unglobals written by J. Mark Munoz and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even with growing trends in isolationist, minimalist and protectionist movements, there is limited reading material on the subject. While many people are perplexed by the changes taking place globally and cannot quite put a finger on what’s really happening, "The Unglobals" offers fresh ideas and aims to get a conversation going and find solution pathways to personal and organizational success. Written in a style similar to Spencer Johnson’s Who Moved My Cheese?, "The Unglobals" offers fictional but plausible stories of individuals who have detached themselves from the globalized world. The notion of globalization alternatives and economic nationalism presented in this short, easy-to-read, thought-provoking book will intrigue readers.

Book Coalitions across Borders

Download or read book Coalitions across Borders written by Jackie Smith and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coalitions across Borders shows how social movements have cooperated and conflicted as they work to develop a transnational civil society in response to perceived threats of neoliberalism—free trade, privatization, structural adjustment, and unbridled corporate power. The authors explore the processes of transnational mobilization, discussing the motivations and methods of cross-border cooperation as well as the conflicts that have affected movement abilities to promote social change. The original case studies included in this volume represent a diverse cross section of transnational movement coalitions—from various regions and nations, representing different movement interests, and addressing a range of economic injustices. Coalitions across Borders reveals the many social conditions that enable and constrain the formation of transnational civil societies and the ways in which movement actors manage conflicts as they work toward common goals.

Book The Rise of the Anti Corporate Movement

Download or read book The Rise of the Anti Corporate Movement written by Evan Osborne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of Enron and the other high-profile cases of corporate malfeasance, it is easy to paint today's executives as villains and blame big business, and corporations generally, for a wide array of social ills. Is the criticism warranted? Not quite, says Evan Osborne, as he traces the history of anti-corporate sentiment and assesses the fever-pitch hatred, by some, of all things corporate. While not perfect angels, Osborne argues, corporations confer many more benefits to society than ills. Moreover, they are an essential engine of human progress, and longstanding legal principles are more than adequate to address their flaws. And that makes the rising tide of anti-corporate sentiment dangerous. Why? Look at the facts: Large corporations inspire both awe and fear. On the one hand, they create jobs, introduce scientific and technological breakthroughs, open up borders through trade, and provide indispensable products and services that make life easier. On the other hand, many think they undermine the will of the people, encourage bribery and corruption, finance oppressive regimes, ruin values and culture, befoul the environment, and encourage economic inequality. It was no accident that the terrorists of September 11 targeted the World Trade Center, an iconic symbol of American financial power. In this provocative book, Evan Osborne pulls back the curtain to illuminate how corporations have evolved as an essential element of society, and how opposition to them has developed out of proportion—a fire fanned by anti-business activists, the media, and other groups. He sets the record straight, explaining how corporations work, how they have evolved in the context of other institutions, the net benefits they provide—and how to deal with their undeniable imperfections. At the same time, he shows how anti-business claims have become more strident and where these arguments fail to stand up to scrutiny.

Book LA GLOBALIZACI N CONCEPTO PARA LA CONSTRUCCI N DE LA HISTORIA DEL MUNDO ACTUAL

This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La globalización representa nuestro mundo actual.
