Book excerpt: "In The Art of Stillness, Iyer draws on the lives of well-known wanderer-monks like Cohen--as well as from his own experiences as a travel writer who chooses to spend most of his time in rural Japan--to explore why advances in technology are making us more likely to retreat. Iyer reflects that this is perhaps the reason why many people--even those with no religious commitment--seem to be turning to yoga, or meditation, or tai chi. These aren't New Age fads so much as ways to rediscover the wisdom of an earlier age."--Publisher's description.

Book Movements in Stillness

Download or read book Movements in Stillness written by Edgar Soberón and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Soberon's classically elegant still-life paintings are grounded in the work of the old as well as the modern masters. A contemporary painter and printmaker now based in San Miquel de Allende, Mexico, Soberon's works speak to the long tradition of painting still life in the Hispanic world as exemplified by works of Spanish masters such as Francisco de Zurbaran and Francisco de Goya. The artist is recognized for his mastery of technique, his sensitivity to light and textures as well his ability to convey a wide range of ideas and emotions within the relatively narrow thematic range of the still life. Soberon left his native Cuba at a young age, going to Spain with his family in 1971 before emigrating to New York two years later. As a young artist he studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, but returned to Europe in the 1980s. While in Spain in 1987, it was the masters of the Spanish Golden Age of still-life painting that most deeply struck a responsive chord in his imagination. Together with his appreciation for the modern art of his native Cuba, these influences came to define a style of painting that is a unique blend of past and present.

Book Between Stillness and Motion

Download or read book Between Stillness and Motion written by Eivind Røssaak and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the development of film as an artistic medium in the 1890s, there has been an inherent tension between still photographic images and moving cinematic images, from their form and function to the messages they convey and their impact on the beholder and on culture at large. This volume, one of the first book-length works to analyze, critique, and further the international debate about the meaning and use of motion and stillness in film and photography, takes these concepts out of the theoretical arena of cinematic studies and applies them to the wider and ever-changing landscape of images and media. With contributions from such acclaimed international scholars as Tom Gunning, Thomas Elsaesser, Mark B. N. Hansen, George Baker, Ina Blom, and Christa Blümlinger, these collected essays examine the strategic uses of stillness and motion in art from the mid-nineteenth century to the technologically driven present.

Book Stillness in a Mobile World

Download or read book Stillness in a Mobile World written by David Bissell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection of essays on the conceptual, political and philosophical importance of stillness is positioned within a world that has increasingly come to be understood through the theoretical and conceptual lens of movement. With contributions from leading scholars in the field, the diversity of this collection illuminates the multiplicity of ontological and epistemological registers through which stillness moves: from human geography to media studies, cultural theory to fine arts. With the help of luminaries such as Deleuze, Bergson, Barthes and Beckett, this book interweaves cutting-edge theoretical insight with empirical illustrations which examine and traverse a multitude of practices, spaces and events. In an era where stasis, slowness and passivity are often held to be detrimental, this collection puts forward a new set of political and ethical concerns which help us to come to terms with, understand, and account for (im)mobile life. Stillness in a Mobile World in an essential source of reference for both undergraduate and post-graduate students working within disciplines such as cultural studies, sociology, mobility studies, and human geography.

Book Movement of Stillness

  • Author : Jacqui Derbecker
  • Publisher : BalboaPress
  • Release : 2011-11-10
  • ISBN : 1452537089

Download or read book Movement of Stillness written by Jacqui Derbecker and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book "Movement Of Stillness" reveals the New Mayan Calandar post 2012 as channeled by Jacqui Derbecker from Edgar Cayce. Cayce was a well-known mystic philosopher, seer, channelor, and author. He lived from 1877-1945. Jacqui felt honoured and priviledged to channel/streamline, through automatic writing, about 100 prophecies which are revealed in complete detail. By channeling Cayce she was able to clearly visualize the authentic and exciting New Mayan Calandar which she states, "it's not exactly what some perceive it to be." Jacqui explains, "there are only positive high vibrational messages represented by the Mayan's predictions and not ones of mass destruction." She advises that now is the time to make "living in Spirit" a reality as we move into a higher realm of truth and a natural original way of being. These prophecies are called the "All Truths" or "Crystal Messages of Truth". Each touch upon the daily living aspects of: career, relationships, financial, emotional, physical, mind, spirit and our sense of community. They speak directly to each and everyone of us regarding the releasing of old barriers and awakening to your authentic self. Thus creating a sense of stillness and peace.
