Book Ecology and Behaviour of North American Black Bears

Download or read book Ecology and Behaviour of North American Black Bears written by Roger A. Powell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What main factors affect mammalian home range size and dynamics? To what extent do constraints on home range characteristics vary between the sexes? This book aims to address these issues by concentrating the authors' expertise and experience in studies of home ranges in general and focusing on their studies of black bears of the Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, in particular. The authors provide an overview of the black bears and methods for their study before discussing concepts of home range, developing predictive habitat quality models, addressing influences of food production on social organization and exploring the mating behaviour of male bears.

Book American Black Bears Ursus Americanus of the Paunsaugunt Plateau

Download or read book American Black Bears Ursus Americanus of the Paunsaugunt Plateau written by Rebekah Adriana Castro Dungan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over human-bear conflict and questions about the ecology of Paunsaugunt Plateau's population of black bears (Ursus americanus) arose due to their visitation to popular recreation sites. Greater insight about bears and their habitat use provides a foundation for conflict mitigation and effective management decisions. Between 2014 and 2017, seventeen black bears (11 female, 6 male) were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio-collars so that we could track their locations, daily activity patterns, and ambient temperatures. By analyzing bear locations, we calculated annual and seasonal home ranges for 16 bears, including 25 den sites. Home ranges typically consisted of three dominant vegetation types, Utah juniper, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. I used mixed effects models to better understand den site selection and found that slope (27.87 ± 2.03) was the most significant factor (p

Book Multiscale Effects of Forest Roads on Black Bears ursus Americanus

Download or read book Multiscale Effects of Forest Roads on Black Bears ursus Americanus written by Benjamin S. Jimenez and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the vast network of roads continues to expand across the continent, so too does the necessity to understand the associated ecological effects. To appropriately assess the impacts of these roads on wildlife it is necessary to evaluate how they affect ecological processes at multiple spatial and temporal scales. In particular, where hunting is associated with road access, roads may induce heightened behavioral responses. I assessed the effects of forest roads on habitat selection and activity patterns of a population of black bears (Ursus americanus) in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains of northern Idaho, USA. This black bear population is exposed to high hunting and recreational pressure facilitated by a dense network of forest roads and its close proximity to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and Spokane, Washington. Current hunting season structure allows for use of bait and dogs in spring and portions of the fall seasons, with an additional non-lethal summer pursuit season. I used Global Positioning Systems (GPS) locations collected at 20 minute intervals from 25 collared adult bears from June 1 2007 through November 2008 to elucidate the multi-scale effects of roads on black bear habitat selection, activity patterns and movement rates. I hypothesized that the effects of roads on black bears would be scale dependent, such that at larger spatial and temporal scales roads would have little effect on habitat use, whereas at finer spatiotemporal scales habitat selection, behavior and movement rates of black bears would be affected by roads as traffic volumes increased. While habitat selection varied by month as well as by gender, selection for features presumably associated with risk (canopy cover and distance to roads) and activity patterns near roads illuminated an apparent trade-off between the costs and benefits associated with spending time near roads. This work suggest that although areas adjacent to roads likely contain resources desirable to bears, the risks associated with these areas require them adjust their use of and activity patterns within these areas so as to minimize mortality risk. Manipulation of road access and season dates may be a useful management tool to affect the vulnerability of bears to hunter harvest.

Book Impacts of a 4 lane Highway on the Spatial Ecology of American Black Bears and the Effectiveness of Wildlife Underpasses in Eastern North Carolina

Download or read book Impacts of a 4 lane Highway on the Spatial Ecology of American Black Bears and the Effectiveness of Wildlife Underpasses in Eastern North Carolina written by Matthew Flanders McCollister and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 2001 through 2005, the North Carolina Department of Transportation rerouted and upgraded a section of U.S. Highway 64 in Washington County to a 4-lane divided highway. This new roadway included 3 wildlife underpasses with adjacent wildlife fencing to mitigate the effects of the highway on wildlife, in particular American black bears (Ursus americanus). From 2000 to 2001, the University of Tennessee conducted research on the spatial ecology and population demographics of the black bear population at the new highway site and on a nearby control area of similar habitat composition. From 2006 to 2007, after highway construction, data collection was repeated and additional data were collected to document use of the 3 wildlife underpasses and wildlife mortalities from vehicle collisions. I tested several hypotheses to determine if the new highway caused changes in home-range characteristics, spatial responses, habitat use, movement characteristics, and activity patterns of black bears. Using a dataset of 5,775 hourly locations and 4,998 daily locations from 57 bears, I detected no changes in home-range characteristics or movement characteristics of bears because of the new highway. However, the power for several of these analyses was relatively low and my research focused on females. I did detect changes in bear habitat use and activity patterns resulting from the new road. In particular, bears from the new highway area were closer to the road and became more active in morning when highway traffic was low. Underpass monitoring yielded 2,053 photographs of wildlife and 3,622 wildlife crossings based on track counts. The highway surveys recorded 196 animal mortalities from vehicle collisions. I observed an increase in wildlife crossings at the underpass sites, but no difference in roadkill frequency between protected sections of the highway (underpasses and fencing) compared with unprotected sections. However, substantially fewer animal-vehicle collisions (primarily deer [Odocoileus virginianus]) were reported in the study section of U.S. 64 compared with adjacent sections of this highway. Overall, I found few impacts on black bear spatial ecology resulting from the highway and that the 3 wildlife underpasses were effective.
