Download or read book The Stone Age Cultures of Kenya Colony written by L. S. B. Leakey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey (1903-72) was a British archaeologist, naturalist and palaeoanthropologist who made a significant contribution to the study of human evolutionary development. First published in 1931, this work presents the results of two periods of excavation by the East African Archaeological Expedition during 1926-7 and 1928-9. As noted in the preface, the findings of these excavations enabled the Expedition 'to work out a number of clear subdivisions in Pleistocene and recent times, based upon climatic changes, and to establish in most cases the relation of the cultures found to these time divisions.' The text contains numerous illustrative figures, including original drawings and photographs. Numerous appendices are also included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in archaeology, anthropology and East Africa.

Book Mousterian Lithic Technology

Download or read book Mousterian Lithic Technology written by Steven L. Kuhn and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings depend more on technology than any other animal--the use of tools and weapons is vital to the survival of our species. What processes of biocultural evolution led to this unique dependence? Steven Kuhn turns to the Middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) and to artifacts associated with Neanderthals, the most recent human predecessors. His study examines the ecological, economic, and strategic factors that shaped the behavior of Mousterian tool makers, revealing how these hominids brought technological knowledge to bear on the basic problems of survival. Kuhn's main database consists of assemblages of stone artifacts from four caves and a series of open-air localities situated on the western coast of the Italian peninsula. Variations in the ways stone tools were produced, maintained, and discarded demonstrate how Mousterian hominids coped with the problems of keeping mobile groups supplied with the artifacts and raw materials they used on a daily basis. Changes through time in lithic technology were closely tied to shifting strategies for hunting and collecting food. Some of the most provocative findings of this study stem from observations about the behavioral flexibility of Mousterian populations and the role of planning in foraging and technology. Originally published in 1995. Book The Nature of Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Miriam N. Haidle
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-01-19
  • ISBN : 9401774269
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book The Nature of Culture written by Miriam N. Haidle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces a model of the expansion of cultural capacity as a systemic approach with biological, historical and individual dimensions. It is contrasted with existing approaches from primatology and behavioural ecology; influential factors like differences in life history and demography are discussed; and the different stages of the development of cultural capacity in human evolution are traced in the archaeological record. The volume provides a synthetic view on a) the different factors and mechanisms of cultural development, and b) expansions of cultural capacities in human evolution beyond the capacities observed in animal culture so far. It is an important topic because only a volume of contributions from different disciplines can yield the necessary breadth to discuss the complex subject. The model introduced and discussed originates in the naturalist context and tries to open the discussion to some culturalist aspects, thus the publication in a series with archaeological and biological emphasis is apt. As a new development the synthetic model of expansion of cultural capacity is introduced and discussed in a broad perspective.

Book Men of the Old Stone Age Their Environment Life and Art

Download or read book Men of the Old Stone Age Their Environment Life and Art written by Henry Fairfield Osborn and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 1918-01-01 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the outcome of an ever-memorable tour through the country of the men of the Old Stone Age; guided by three of the distinguished archæologists of France; to whom the work is gratefully dedicated. This Palæolithic tour[A] of three weeks; accompanied as it was by a constant flow of conversation and discussion; made a very profound impression; namely; of the very early evolution of the spirit of man; of the close relation between early human environment and industry and the development of mind; of the remote antiquity of the human powers of observation; of discovery; and of invention. It appears that men with faculties and powers like our own; but in the infancy of education and tradition; were living in this region of Europe at least 25;000 years ago. Back of these intelligent races were others; also of eastern origin but in earlier stages of mental development; all pointing to the very remote ancestry of man from earlier mental and physical stages.
