Book Mountain Scenery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mountain Scenery Classic Reprint written by Henry E. Colton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Scenery IT has been the custom, in years past, for the seekers of health or pleasure, as the warm sun and miasma of the low lands warned them of approaching danger, to turn their atten tion towards the North 3 and it is only of late that the Virginia Springs, with all their invigorating powers, have been the stopping-place of others than the proud sons and daughters of the Old Dominion. But even yet the mountains of Western North Carolina, with mineral waters equal to any, and a cli mate superior to any other, are comparatively neglected. And we see even prominent citizens of our own State, year after year, journeying to Saratoga, and other watering-places of the North. They are familiar with every spot at Niagara or Sara toga, but cannot give an idea of the western part of their own State, except as they have scantily derived it from others. Such an accusation, however, cannot so truthfully be brought against our brethren of the State of South Carolina. For many years it has been their custom to resort to our mountains for the promotion of their health, for recreation and pleasure. Book The Mountain Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mountain Classic Reprint written by John Harvey Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain The little book which I now offer aims to show the grandest and most accessible of our extinct volcanoes from all points of view. Like the glacial rivers, its text will be found a narrow stream flowing swiftly amidst great mountain scenery. Its abundant illustrations cover not only the giants' fairyland south of the peak, but also the equally stupendous scenes that await the adventurer who penetrates the harder trails and climbs the greater glaciers of the north and east slopes. No book will ever be large enough to tell the whole story. That must be learned by summers of severe though profitable toil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain: Renewed Studies in Impressions and Appearances For the rest these sketches should speak for themselves. They Will tell you that my ih terest is with the beauty of the mountains rather than their science, their history, or their conquest by Alpinists. I have used science herein by way of illustrating the bases of form and color and used history and narrative merely as a setting for the picture. It is the picture - the pictorial in the mountains that I am seeking, and the remainder is only so much pigment, varnish, and gilt frame. All the world loves the mountains - loves them as color patterns on the blue, as marvels of light and shade, as symbols of peace and purity loves them, in other words, as one might a picture. That there is a supreme grandeur about the peaks and a great beauty in the lesser hills every one Will acknowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountains and Other Nature Sketches The publication of this collection of "Nature Sketches," as their author called them, is in response to the many requests which came to him in the last few years of his life. While the field study of birds and of the trees that were characteristic of any locality, was a recreation full of pleasure for him, back of all and above all, he felt the appeal of the mountains. The mountains satisfied him; they rested him. More than twenty times he visited the "White Hills" of New Hampshire; sometimes returning to the scene of a former stay, often going to a new point from which to study them. He went among them, he went around them and to the tops of many of them. Other mountain regions claimed him from time to time; but this was his "mountain home." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Hills: Their Legends, Landscape, and Poetry The object of this volume is to direct attention to the noble landscapes that lie along the routes by which the White Mountains are now approached by tourists, - many of which are still unknown to travellers; to help per sons appreciate landscape more adequately; and to asso ciate with the principal scenes poetic passages which illus trate, either the permanent character of the views, or some peculiar aspects in which the author of the book has seen them. Where so many landscapes are described in detail, there cannot fail to be sameness and repetition. It would have been more to the author's mind to arrange the vol ume by subjects instead of by districts, and to treat the scenery under the heads of rivers, passes, ridges, peaks, &c. But it was found that such a distribution and treat ment, although it might have given the book more artis tic unity, would have made it less valuable on the whole, than to construct it as a guide to particular landscapes, and a stimulant to the enjoyment of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art-Journal, 1872, Vol. 34 Thus it will be seen that mountains vary greatly in their appearance in consequence of important differences of structure. To delineate them properly they should be understood, and to understand and criticise the delineations, the mountains themselves should be well studied by the critic. A careful and constant reference to nature, a great familiarity with the varieties of scenery presented in different countries, and an earnest endeavour to understand, as far as possible, the cause of these varieties, are absolutely essential to all who would represent mountain-scenery with effect, and equally so for all who profess to judge con cerning the merits or demerits of such representations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonders of the Yellowstone Set like a gem in the centre of this snow-rimmed crown of the continent, is the loveliest body of fresh water on the globe, its dark-blue surface at an elevation greater than that of the highest clouds that fleck the azure sky Of a summer's day, over the tops of the loftiest mountains of the East. Its waters teem with trout, and the primeval forests that cover the surrounding country are crowded with game. But these are the least of its attrae tions. It is the wildness and grandeur of the en closing mountain scenery, and Still more the eu rions, beautiful, wonderful and stupendous natural phenomena which characterize the region, that have raised it to sudden fame, and caused it to be set apart by our national government as a grand national play-ground and museum of unparalleled, indeed incomparable, marvels, free to all men for all time.
