Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hunter's Camp-Fires In the following account of experiences in several parts of the world the author has kept this fact in mind, and has endeavored to give the reader a picture of the life in the regions visited as well as a description of the different kinds of hunting. In travelling outside of the regular tourist routes the sportsman is obliged to make the best of many disagreeable occurrences, as well as a certain amount of hardship and discomfort incidental to active life in the open during all kinds of weather. Fort unately, in looking backward he is apt to forget the unpleasant experiences, and to dwell upon the pleasant and exciting events of camp-life and the chase. In this volume an attempt has been made to keep the unpleasant as much in the background as fidelity of narrative permits. The boundless space, the glorious sunshine, the balmy air, the cleanness Of the face Of Nature, the absence of dust, filth, waste paper, polluted streams, dirty humanity, and many other things that wear on Life in a great city, strongly appeal to me. The countries that will grow corn and wheat and hogs in great abundance per acre are not the only lands worth knowing. Consider Ari zona. Certainly it is a Land of Health, and if ever I am called upon to die in the East, I will go there and live. Book Camp Fires of a Naturalist

Download or read book Camp Fires of a Naturalist written by Clarence E. Edwords and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp-Fires of a Naturalist: The Story of Fourteen Expeditions After North American Mammals Hunting-Stories without exciting adventures and hairbreadth escapes find little favour with the general public, but those who have spent pleasant hours in tho woods know that such adventures are of rare occurrence. This book deals solely with facts. The adventures of Professor Dyche while collecting specimens of the larger mammals of North America are not of a thrilling kind, but they give the life in the woods as it really is. My story is taken from the note-books and diaries of the professor, and not one word has been added to the facts which he has noted, to make the book more interesting or exciting. I offer simply a description of the life of a naturalist-hunter and of the pleasures of camp life, with a naturalist's explanations of the habits of animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp-Fire Musings: Life and Good Times in the Woods Mankind has never willingly relinquished the camp fire. It is not preference, but necessity, that has driven him indoors. Even there he carried and rekindled its embers, and it became the hearth-fire: a ame, sister to the ame of love. So much he res cued from the wreck of Paradise. It is not till the overcrowding of his own kind has exterminated the game, and ravaged the forests with steel and fire; and not till the increase of competing herds has exhausted the pastures, that man will fence in for himself a patch of the wilderness, domesticate for himself a few of its birds_and quadrupeds, and build for himself a castle. Civilization is to him a choice of evils, and he has never forgotten nor ceased to long for Paradise. It is not for civilization to vaunt itself over barbarism. Let us first produce a better moralist and legislator than the Shepherd of Midian, a better bard than he of Chios, a sweeter singer than the shepherd boy of Bethlehem, seers more sublime than they who saw and followed the Star, better soldiers than the forest ers who crushed imperial Rome. Download or read book Camp Fire Stories written by Edward Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp Fire Stories: A Series of Sketches of the Union Army in the Southwest Somehow a story seems to tell what war meant, in all its phases, better than does a mere description; and what a man has seen and felt is better understood if the incidents of the seeing and feeling are graphically told by the one who did them both. So I have yielded as "the boys" have urged that I write these stories out as they have been told at our Grand Army Camp-Fires; because, they said, we old soldiers would be soon dead, and the young folks who had grown up to take our places should have left them our legacy of experience - the fun and the pathos, the drama and the tragedy - that they might know what their fathers went through in saving this country during its first internecine strife. Therefore I have written these Camp-Fire stories for the old comrades in arms to the reviving of their memories, and for their sons and daughters to the letting them see what war was. Five of the hospital stories were published a few years ago in the "Golden Rule," the organ of the Y. P.S. C. E., though even these are retold in this book; two or three have been published in local papers; and at least two of the jokes I gave to Harper's Drawer.
