Book Designing Net Shaped Molds to Manufacture Fiber Composite Laminates With Defined Thickness Variation

Download or read book Designing Net Shaped Molds to Manufacture Fiber Composite Laminates With Defined Thickness Variation written by Adam Karan and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Black Holes (ABH) absorb sound waves using specific geometries that demonstrate power curves and are currently being investigated in many research labs. To continue progressing toward everyday use, more practical methods of manufacturing parts with defined thickness variations must be found. For applications involving aircraft and eliminating sound within pilot cabins, materials must be used that are not only strong but also lightweight. For this reason, composite laminates are often the best choice among aircraft applications. This thesis project aims to construct net-shaped molds to manufacture continuous fiber composite laminates with designed thickness variations, and to better understand possible opportunities for producing laminates using different composite manufacturing techniques. This project examines five manufacturing setups utilizing hand layup and vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Setups include using a premade caul, constructing a 3D-printed open and closed mold, clamping L-channels together with a small mold, and attempting VARTM techniques using foam molds. This thesis distinguished overarching issues such as the need to simultaneously apply pressure in the vertical and horizontal direction, the extensive manual labor necessary to produce laminates with complex geometries using these manufacturing techniques, and the difficulty in predicting the cured laminate thickness using open-mold systems. Laminate dimensions cured in open-mold systems are difficult to predict and require careful precision in regard to the target cured laminate thickness, the balance of the molds used in the manufacturing process, and the layout of the materials while curing the laminate. In the end, it was determined that to best produce the target thickness profiles using open-molds, VARTM techniques with molds that shaped wide and less steep tapers along the flange should be used.

Book Building a Fiberglass Boat

Download or read book Building a Fiberglass Boat written by Arthur Edmunds and published by . This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Edmunds is one of the country's top naval architects and his knowledge of the boat building industry has never been more apparent than in this book. Art has written this book so the reader, unfamiliar with the construction process, will understand every aspect of the process. But this is not a beginner's-only boat building book. Advanced craftsmen and top professionals have equally as much to learn from Art's years of experience. Art takes the reader from the first step of Building a Fiberglass Boat to the last step, in a manner that will certainly inspire all who ever pondered the notion. He expertly explains why a competent craftsman would want to undertake the seemingly overwhelming task of building his own boat. Art has described the two most popular sizes and styles of boats as examples for the project; a twenty-five-foot open boat and a thirty-three-foot cruising boat. Sail is also explained. By referring to these example boats, the reader can envision a boat of any size, limited only by the imagination. Everyone can learn from this book. If you have a boat just waiting to be built, you will now have the knowledge. If you never plan to build a boat, you will understand the entire process, making the Buying Experience far less confusing. There are no Trade Secrets, only knowledge not yet learned.

Book Engineering with Fibre Polymer Laminates

Download or read book Engineering with Fibre Polymer Laminates written by P.C. Powell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has its recent origins in a Master's course in Polymer Engineering at Manchester. It is a rather extended version of composite mechanics covered in about twenty five hours within a two-week intensive programme on Fibre Polymer Composites which also formed part of the UK Government and Industry-sponsored Integrated Graduate Development Scheme in Polymer Engineering. The material has also been used in other courses, and in teaching to students of engineering and of polymer technology both in the UK and in mainland Europe. There are already many books describing the analysis of and mechanical behaviour of polymer/fibre composites, so why write another? Most of these excellent books appear to be aimed at readers who already have a substantial understanding of stress analysis for linear elastic isotropic materials, who are thoroughly at home with mathematical analysis, and who seem often not to need much of the reassurance which numerical examples and illustrated applications can offer. In teaching the mechanics of composites to many groups of scientists, technologists and engineers, I have found that most of them need and seek an introduction before consulting the advanced texts. This book is intended to fill the gap. Throughout this text is interspersed a substantial range of examples to bring out the practical implications of the basic principles, and a wide range of problems (with outline solutions) to test the reader and extend understanding.

Book Fibre Metal Laminates

Download or read book Fibre Metal Laminates written by Ad Vlot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibre metal laminates were developed at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, from the beginning of the 1980s. This is a new family of hybrid materials consisting of thin metal layers bonded together by fibres embedded in an adhesive. As a result of this build-up, fibre metal laminates possess a mixture of the characteristics of both metals and composite materials. Initial development led to the `Arall' variant using aramid fibres, which was first applied on the C-17 military transport aircraft around 1990. Large-scale application became possible with a variant using glass fibres, dubbed `Glare', which was selected for the Airbus A380 super jumbo in 2001. This is the first book to discuss these new materials and it deals mostly with Glare. It covers most of the relevant aspects of the materials, from static mechanical properties, fatigue and impact to design, production and maintenance of aircraft structures. This book contains the basic information on these new materials necessary for engineers and aircraft operators alike.
