Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978 Eric Hansen found himself shipwrecked on a desert island in the Red Sea. When goat smugglers offered him safe passage to Yemen, he buried seven years' worth of travel journals deep in the sand and took his place alongside the animals on a leaky boat bound for a country that he'd never planned to visit. As he tells of the turbulent seas that stranded him on the island and of his efforts to retrieve his buried journals when he returned to Yemen ten years later, Hansen enthralls us with a portrait -- uncannily sympathetic and wildly offbeat -- of this forgotten corner of the Middle East. With a host of extraordinary characters from his guide, Mohammed, ever on the lookout for one more sheep to squeeze into the back seat of his car, to madcap expatriates and Eritrean gun runners- and with landscapes that include cities of dreamlike architectural splendor, endless sand dunes, and terrifying mountain passes, Hansen reveals the indelible allure of a land steeped in custom, conflicts old and new, and uncommon beauty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This travelogue begins with the terrifying account of the storm that left Eric Hansen and four companions shipwrecked on a deserted Red Sea island. Rescued by smugglers and taken to the Yemen coast, Hansen found himself increasingly enthralled by this little-known land, intrigued by its customs, charmed by its natural beauty and captivated by its people as he travelled the country, seeking out its wildest geography and rarest wildlife while searching for a way to retrieve the travel journals he lost in the shipwreck. A humorous mix of reportage, comedy and tension, this is a glimpse into a country insufficiently understood by the West, and into a culture at once secretive and friendly, alien and enchanting.

Book excerpt: Eric Hansen was the first westerner ever to walk across the island of Borneo. Completely cut off from the outside world for seven months, he traveled nearly 1,500 miles with small bands of nomadic hunters known as Penan. Beneath the rain forest canopy, they trekked through a hauntingly beautiful jungle where snakes and frogs fly, pigs climb trees, giant carnivorous plants eat mice, and mushrooms glow at night. At once a modern classic of travel literature and a gripping adventure story, Stranger in the Forest provides a rare and intimate look at the vanishing way of life of one of the last surviving groups of rain forest dwellers. Hansen's absorbing, and often chilling, account of his exploits is tempered with the humor and humanity that prompted the Penan to take him into their world and to share their secrets.

Book DC Motor Control A case study

Download or read book DC Motor Control A case study written by MOHAMMED ASLAM HUSAIN and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the four quadrant speed control system for DC motor has been studied and constructed. To achieve speed control, an electronic technique called pulse width modulation is used which generates high and low pulses. These pulses vary in the speed of the engine. For the generation of these pulses, a microcontroller is used. It is a periodic change in the program. Different speed grades and the direction are depended on different buttons. The experiment has proved that this system is higher performance. Speed control of a machine is the most vital and important part of any industrial organization. This paper is designed to develop a four-quad speed control system for a DC motor using microcontroller. The engine is operated in four quadrants ie clockwise, counterclockwise, forward brake and reverse brake. It also has a feature of speed control. The four-quadrant operation of the dc engine is best suited for industries where engines are used and as a requirement they can rotate in clockwise, counter-clockwise and thus apply brakes immediately in both the directions. In the case of a specific operation in an industrial environment, the engine needs to be stopped immediately. In this scenario, this system is very integral. The PWM pulses generated by the microcontroller are instantaneous in both directions and as a result of applying the PWM pulses. The microcontroller used in this project is from 8051 family. Push buttons are provided for the operation of the motor which are interfaced to the microcontroller that provides an input signal to it and controls the speed of the engine through a motor driver IC. The speed and direction of DC motor has been observed on digital CRO

Book What Every Christian Should Know about Islam

Download or read book What Every Christian Should Know about Islam written by Christian S. Anderson and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Every Christian Should Know about Islam can be read profitably by the serious student or by anyone who just wants to get a basic handle on the religion founded by Muhammed almost 1400 years ago. It is a distillation of the history and teachings of Islam written from a Christian perspective. An entire chapter is devoted to answering the false claims one will commonly find on Islamic web sites. Another chapter covers the subject of Islam and terrorism, and that the utilization of it as a jihadist tactic comes out of the tradition and philosophy of the revolutionary Left, rather than from the religion of Islam itself. Some other less-known facts one will discover in this book include the following: Muhammed married one of his favorite wives when she was merely a child of about nine That the Sunni/Shia division of Islam had its origin in a feud between two of Mecca's clans that dates from pre-Islamic times The god of Islam, Allah, was originally the Lunar Deity of the pre-Islamic pagan Arabs That Islam itself began as a Christian heresy Muslims originally faced Jerusalem, and not Mecca, while in prayer Mr. Anderson studied Biblical languages at Life Pacific College in Los Angeles, graduating with a BA degree in 1979. He also has AS degrees from Riverside Community College in Riverside, California. Following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, he determined to learn everything he could about Islam and the jihadist threat. What Every Christian Should Know about Islam is a product of approximately 4 years of research. Mr. Anderson has taught the Bible, Christian doctrine, and apologetics for many years in various churches in Southern California's Inland Empire.

Book Organizational Public Relations

Download or read book Organizational Public Relations written by Christopher Spicer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public relations practitioners are often called upon to help chart their organization's strategic development, thus functioning as managerial decision makers linking the organization to its larger environment. This book is about understanding organizations, especially the role played by organizational decision making in the development and implementation of public relations programs and activities. It emphasizes the ways in which an organization's culture and decision making processes ultimately influence the success or failure of their public relations efforts. The research, case studies, and author's interpretations and suggestions explore the often confusing netherworld of organizational mindsets -- particularly as those world views affect the organization's relations with clients and other stakeholders. Understanding organizational politics is the way to understanding how and why decisions are made by the organization's dominant coalition. The primary goal of this text is to enhance our understanding of the ways in which organizations "work" -- the political process that accompanies organizational decision making. As an instrumental participant in the organizational political process, the public relations practitioner must posess knowledge and understanding of the organization's political process in order to succeed within that organization. Given the need for public relations practitioners to form coalitions, negotiate consensus, and advocate organizational interests, the political system metaphor is most approriate for understanding the relationship between organizational power and organizational public relations. This book, then, "steps back" from a focus solely on the design of public relations programs, and instead examines how the impetus for those programs emerges within the organization as a result of organizational politics in action. Its special features include: * practitioner responses at the end of each chapter providing commentary on the usefulness of the ideas presented; * sidebars from popular sources illustrating theories; * new case studies; * merging of management and organizational theory and research with communication theory and research; * a focus on external stakeholders from both an advocacy and a collaborative frame resulting in the creation of a "collaborative advocacy" framework for external communication; and * an extended examination of ethical considerations pertaining to organizational decision making and communication.
