Book Powered Adaptive Driving Controls

Download or read book Powered Adaptive Driving Controls written by S. Watson and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent technological advances have introduced automotive adaptive devices which either reduce the physical effort required to control and/or operate a vehicle or alter the way in which driver control initiatives are applied to the vehicle control systems. These adaptive devices provide the possibility of driving a vehicle for many drivers with disabilities. This report reviews the need for a recognized standard or guideline in Canada to ensure that powered adaptive controls installed in automobiles are designed, manufactured, and installed in a safe manner and function. It describes a study of two types of automotive adaptive controls, those that provide an external source of power to actuate existing vehicle controls and those that modify original equipment manufacturer components to alter the operation of vehicle control systems. A survey was conducted to identify the powered adaptive control products commonly prescribed by rehabilitation centres and installed by mobility equipment dealers/installers. Analysis of the products provides a description of their features and utility to a driver with disabilities, along with the modifications required to install the products in a vehicle. The report also incorporates a review of the work of the Adaptive Devices Committee of the Society of Automotive Engineers, which has developed recommended practices and test procedures. The report concludes with discussion of options available for implementing a national standard.

Book Inclusive Design Guidelines for HCI

Download or read book Inclusive Design Guidelines for HCI written by Collette Nicolle and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-06-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elderly population is growing and disabilities tend to increase with age. Professionals in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) are becoming increasingly aware of the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities. They also need to ensure that systems are designed for all, with specific consideration of these groups, not only computing systems but also other assistive and adaptive technologies such as information services and the use of smart cards, assistive robotics, systems for travellers, and home and environmental control systems. Designers need to monitor the latest developments in the design of HCI and to appreciate their impact on accessibility and usability.

Book 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design

Download or read book 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design written by Department Justice and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (a) Design and construction. (1) Each facility or part of a facility constructed by, on behalf of, or for the use of a public entity shall be designed and constructed in such manner that the facility or part of the facility is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities, if the construction was commenced after January 26, 1992. (2) Exception for structural impracticability. (i) Full compliance with the requirements of this section is not required where a public entity can demonstrate that it is structurally impracticable to meet the requirements. Full compliance will be considered structurally impracticable only in those rare circumstances when the unique characteristics of terrain prevent the incorporation of accessibility features. (ii) If full compliance with this section would be structurally impracticable, compliance with this section is required to the extent that it is not structurally impracticable. In that case, any portion of the facility that can be made accessible shall be made accessible to the extent that it is not structurally impracticable. (iii) If providing accessibility in conformance with this section to individuals with certain disabilities (e.g., those who use wheelchairs) would be structurally impracticable, accessibility shall nonetheless be ensured to persons with other types of disabilities, (e.g., those who use crutches or who have sight, hearing, or mental impairments) in accordance with this section.
