Those required for the smaller types of internal combustion engines, such as are now generally used in airplanes, motor boats, farm trac tors, motor trucks, and automobiles, are in greatest demand. Kero sene and fuel oil, which are used to produce light, heat, or power in competition with other more plentiful resources, such as coal, are less desirable with regard both to commercial profit and the conser vation of natural resources. Of the two types of products used in internal combustion engines lubricants and gasoline - the former does not seem as yet to Offer a problem in the conservation of resources. Gasoline is, however, being produced in such quantities that its continued use on the pres ent scale threatens to bring about the practical exhaustion of the country's underground supply of crude petroleum in the course of a few generations at most. The Bureau of Mines knows of no more important problem facing the country to - day than the conservation of this valuable natural resource, and has undertaken through the present investigation and other studies to promote greater efficiency in the utilization of crude petroleum. As mechanical power would have been a relatively new advantage for a farmer in 1913, literature on the subject was presumably scarce, and thus this book was intended to fill that gap. Early chapters cover the basics of a gas-powered engine, including appropriate fuels and the operational principles and design of an internal combustion engine. Comparisons are made between the steam engine and the gas-powered engine in order to illuminate some of the important differences. Later chapters wade more deeply into the specifics of an engine's operation and upkeep, presenting information on the cooling system, carburetors, the ignition apparatus, mufflers, and more. This volume is truly a treasure chest of early information on gas-powered farm equipment. The final chapters of the book are essentially the buyer's guide. Hirshfeld identifies desirable features of construction, the brands that one should consider, and finally examines how to best balance power, speed, and price. There is no doubt that one would be better prepared to make a large purchase after reading this manual. Read today, this book is primarily a pleasant trip back in time. While the fundamentals of the internal combustion engine have not changed in 100 years, the advancements in power and speed have been significant. The early chapters of this book are thus still relevant today; however, the latter chapters are most definitely out of date. This amounted to about billion gallons and $700 million in 1968. The expenditure for 1971 is estimated to be $740 million. Farmers' total use of petroleum fuels thus was about billion gallons in 1968, and their expenditures for such fuels amounted to about billion. Estimated expenditure for 1971 is billion. Value added gives the most meaningful compari sons of the share of the consumer's dollar actually received by the different sectors of the economy as it provides an unduplicated measurement of the gross returns received by the various groups. For example, an increasing share of cash farm receipts is represented by motor fuels, fertilizers, and other purchased production supplies.11 Therefore, the farmer's share of the consumer's dollar as meas ured by value added has' declined relative to thefarmer's share as measured by the more usual com parisons of farm and retail prices. In discussions of farm and marketing shares of the consumer's dollar, statistics on net income after taxes often are cited to illustrate that profits of marketing agencies are a small percentage of the retail price. These statistics are useful in pointing out that costs, including taxes, of marketing agencies make up a large part of their gross margins. It is al most impossible, however, to obtain comparable figures representing net income to farmers. Statistics on cost breakdowns of the marketing bill would be more meaningful if compared to value added. Statistical series are compiled of the numbers and costs of labor employed by agen cies engaged in processing, transportation, whole saling, and retailing of farm food products.12 For more appropriate comparisons, trends in these labor costs and numbers should be related to trends in value added by these agencies rather than to the total marketing bill which includes value added by other agencies.
