Book excerpt: This dissertation offers an in-depth qualitative study regarding motivational factors for college student outdoor leadership at a college outdoor adventure program (COAP) including factors of motivation through the course of involvement and activity specific attributes related to motivation. Between May and November of 2018 interviews with student trip leaders of the host COAP were conducted, and a narrative analysis approach to interviews and data analysis was employed. Student trip leader involvement in youth in outdoor recreation, play in nature, exploration, and roles of leadership was associated with choice to engage in outdoor leadership. Study participants all had previous experience with OAE or COAP programming, and were attracted to outdoor leadership through multiple factors of motivation including social aspects, spending time in nature, dimensions of learning, perceived self-efficacy in leadership, sharing experiences, and organizational influences. Factors for continued participation include learning, teaching, challenge, social components, mentoring, and spending time in nature. Activity specific motivational factors were identified among categories of rock climbing, paddlesports, and backpacking. Emergent motivational themes are also explored and include a gendered perspective of outdoor leadership and negative influences on motivation as well.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop a better sense of student motivations to participate in university outdoor recreation programs (ORPs) with the hope that this furthered understanding would grant new considerations for administration of these programs on college campuses. While the study did not find significant differences between the majority of courses, this researcher suggests that further research is necessary to determine effects that reduction of activity types would have on participant students, as well as, student trip leaders or long term members of ORPs. A thorough literature review of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and insights from the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provided a solid foundation for the development of this study. The SDT provides understanding in terms of the social development, trust, and control (Sibthorp & Jostad, 2014; Davidson, et.al, 2009) and how these outcomes and motivations encourage students to continue to take part in ORPs. The study clearly showed that these programs offer the social development and interpersonal relationships that students are looking for during their college years.

The use of extracurricular activities in higher education has been one route in addressing this issue (Tinto, 1993; Lang, 2001-2002; Hall, 2006). Many colleges continue to incorporate outdoor adventure programs as an option for campus recreation (Bentley, 2005; Festeu, 2002). Outdoor recreation has become a component of American society and its popularity continues to increase. Outdoor adventure programs offered by colleges and universities across the United States represent another area of recent growth (Attarian, 2001). While a number of works have addressed leisure motivation in outdoor settings (Anderson, Anderson, & Young, 2000; Driver, 1977; 2008; Driver, Tarrant, & Manfredo, 1991; Ewert, 1985; 1993; Ewert, & Hollenhorst, 1989; Manfredo, Driver, & Tarrant, 1996; Manning, 2011; Sugerman, 2001), a gap exists with respect to students in college based adventure programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived climbing motivations of students enrolled in instructor based climbing classes, at a university climbing wall. This study only found a significant difference in one of its three hypotheses. No significant difference was found between gender or participation level, but there was a significant difference for the participants between experience level. This study also briefly addressed the relation between the climbing wall program and student retention. By understanding the elements involved in participating in college climbing classes, this research provides empirical evidence for management decision making. These decisions could include changes and improvements in courses offered and even marketing strategies for the climbing wall. Motives were measured with the implementation of a survey questionnaire. In addition to recording personal information, the questionnaire contained the Recreation Experience Preference (REP) scales developed by Driver (1983). The REP scales have been used in a number of outdoor recreation areas, as well as in college outdoor adventure programs (Bentley, 2005). For this study, the survey was administered to students enrolled in instructor based climbing classes at Eastern Washington University's climbing wall. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data and determine statistical significance. Descriptive statistics were used to investigate participant differences in motives. Two types of inferential statistics were run. First, multiple MANOVAs were used to investigate if there are any significant differences across experience level, participation level, and gender. Second, two stepwise multiple regressions were run to determine if any ofthe REP scales could predict experience level or participation level"--Document.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study assessed the motivation and interest in outdoor recreation activities as facilitated by a campus recreation center. The sample consisted of college students enrolled in recreation and kinesiology general education courses at a four-year public California university, and student users of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The study assessed each student's previous twelve month participation in outdoor recreation activities, their preference of who they would like to participate in these activities with, the reasons why they participate in outdoor recreation activities, and demographic information. The questionnaire used to collect data was the Motives for Physical Activities Measure - Revised (MPAM - R) modified to MPAM - R + Nature, which assessed the motivational factors of Interest/Enjoyment, Competence, Appearance, Fitness, Social, and, Affinity for Nature. Results revealed that there was not a difference in the six motivational factors and high versus low motivation to participate in outdoor recreation activities. However, when respondents were grouped as having a high score on intrinsic factors (interest/enjoyment, competence, nature, and social) versus high scores on the extrinsic factors (fitness and appearance), those respondents who were highly motivated showed more interest in outdoor recreation participation. The research also showed most respondents preferred participating with friends or in groups, regardless of the outdoor activity. The evidence from this study suggests that students who are interested in outdoor recreation activities are not distinct or unique based on demographic variables. However, the results did reveal that males were more motivated by competence. Overall, students who participate in outdoor recreation activity are motivated more by companionship preferences. This research supports the idea that social interactions, whether with friends or with a group or class, are important to students.
