Telefónica S.A. currently ranks fourth globally in terms of profit and second in terms of number of customers with operations spanning over five continents. This report investigates Telefónica's motivations for FDI, applying conceptual frameworks developed by leading management theorists. We will focus briefly on the motivations firms face to move away from a home market and then expand on the pull factors, drawing firms to new countries and markets.

Introduction "Global interdependence is pervasive. It is not only political and military.... but] also environmental.... Perhaps the most important aspect of interdependence however is economic." (Terpstra, 1993, Preface) Today more and more firms operate internationally and in some cases even globally. In almost all major economies of the world, the significance of domestic and/or foreign-based transnational corporations is increasing. Such corporations, directly or indirectly, account for a large part of world trade in goods and services (cf. Nilsson, Dicken 1996 p.1). Attempts to theorise such international developments are widespread; therefore, there is no such thing as a "universal" theory. However, the emphasis of most theories tends to be on how businesses should internationalise rather than on why they should do so. Most contributions in literature focus on strategies and structures of international firms but do not explain the reasons of internationalisation. The main aim of this essay is therefore to give an outline of the reasons why companies choose to go international. Using only relevant theories and different examples from business, it shall be demonstrated that there is not only "one" motive for companies to choose international expansion but that there is a variety of causes depending on the respective internal and external environment of the different companies. In the following, under II.) there will be an overview of different reasons for companies to choose international expansion; these reasons will be substantiated by different statements and theories from literature and in each case illustrated by relevant examples. Keywords like "Globalisation" and "International Companies" are characterizing this development. For many companies, this growing interconnection of the global economy represents new challenges for the management, primarily evoked by an increasing international competition which is above all characterized by accelerated developments in technology, shorter life cycles of products or lower barriers to market entry. To overcome these complex challenges and to keep up competitive advantages, companies can often not rely on their own potentials anymore. To survive in the international environment many of them are forced to agree on cooperation with other companies. They consider international cooperation as a form of organisation to ensure the access to resources of strategic importance and as a competitive factor on fast changing markets. This paper will try to substantiate these notions. It is concerned with possible motivations leading companies to international cooperation, as well as with essential success factors. Therefore, the terms "international company" and "international cooperation" will be elucidated and definitions will be given after this introduction. Chapter three analyses the motivations and reasons for cooperation. Subsequent, possible success factors are being discussed according to a phase model of the cooperation process in chapter four. Finally, a critical assessment of cooperation is made by looking at potential risks. The paper closes with a conclusion summarizing the acquired insights.
