In addition, this study aims to demonstrate the functionalities of ERP, and their possible positive effect the system may have on business performance, even though some studies argue that not all ERP implementation project succeed. The paper is organized as follows: the first section will discuss ERP's definition, evolution and history, functionalities, the implementation stages of ERP systems, benefits of ERP and the cloud ERP and its types. The second section will discuss the definition of business processes management. In addition, the BPM methodologies including business process architecture, how to make the right choice for methodology and process classification framework. The last section will discuss and explore how investing in ERP can improve BPM by explaining the budget, time and plan needed for ERP systems and business processes re-engineering and system integration to match with the ERP systems. Also this section includes benefits and risks of ERP on BPM by evaluating ERP effectiveness and efficiency and assessing risks.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) pilot implementation conducted at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego (SSC-SD), the first of four Department of the Navy (DON) pilot implementations. Specifically, comparisons are drawn between both successful and unsuccessful ERP implementations within private sector organizations and that of SSC-SD. Any commonalities in implementation challenges could be applied to future ERP implementations in both the DON and Department of Defense (DOD). The findings are based in part upon interviews and data collected. From the comparison, commonalities exist in ERP implementation challenges between private sector organizations and SSC-SD. Additionally the management techniques used to mitigate those challenges are similar. Finally, due to SSC-SD's financial management structure and appropriated funding constraints, unique obstacles were identified during the implementation. These unique obstacles will be encountered by other Working Capital Funded (WCF) organizations planning to implement ERP on the same scale as SSC-SD. This thesis supports that the implementation of ERP at SSC-SD was a success based on industry comparisons, the goals of Project Cabrillo's business case analysis (ECA), and its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Act compliancy assessment, January 2002.

In the course of the research, the following were conducted: analysis of the ERP system market, identification of the main trends, problems and prospects; highlighting the main advantages and disadvantages of implementing ERP-system in the enterprise; analysis of approaches to assessing the cost-effectiveness of implementing the ERP-system; generalization of ERP system implementation experience at specific enterprises, evaluation of implementation efficiency; development of recommendations for replicating the ERP-system in accordance with the analysis. As a result of the research, it was found that the implementation of ERP-systems is an expensive and resource-intensive process that distracts the management and production personnel of the company from the main activity for a long time. In this connection, studies of mechanisms for reducing these costs and overcoming resistance to change are relevant. The typification of the implementation of ERP-systems is expected to reduce the negative factors.
