Book Motivation and Self fulfillment

Download or read book Motivation and Self fulfillment written by Verl Allen Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The idea that motivation is largely an internally generated desire is sometimes new to individuals. Traditional thinking held by a large portion of the population is that leaders motivate others within organizations, and motivation is impacted predominantly by external incentives that are created to encourage others to conform and comply with desired performance standards. Although many leaders, managers, and supervisors may believe that it is part of their job description to motivate their followers, the opinion of many experts is that motivation is largely an internally-generated choice made by each individual. If it is true that motivation is primarily internally generated, perhaps this book should then be accompanied by a "Warning Label" that reads, "Caution! This book may influence your thinking and change your assumptions about yourself!" In fact, the primary purpose of this book is to "hold up a mirror" so that readers may, if they so choose, reflect on themselves and the factors which motivate them individually. If motivation is both individual and highly personal, then it behooves each one of us to thoughtfully undertake a self-assessment process to understand more fully how we are motivated, inspired, and influenced in our daily lives. Throughout this book, we cheerfully admit that we challenge assumptions of "conventional wisdom" that are often held by the average person. Much of what we think we know needs to be confirmed or disconfirmed in this world and there is no better place to validate what we actually know than with our efforts to understand ourselves. The theme of this book is clear and straight forward. "Each individual is far more capable of accomplishing great things than he or she can even imagine - and understanding our own identity can enable us to more completely honor our potential." That's the main idea of this book - and we think it's both a powerful message and a worthy subject to study and understand for every person who picks up this book or who accesses it online. There are very few simple issues in life, and certainly the complex nature of each person's world is no exception. The effort that individuals make to understand what matters most in their lives is rarely consciously undertaken - or compared with how those individuals actually invest their time each day. In this book we address why individuals make so many of the errors associated with self-deception, cognitive dissonance, and downright personal dishonest or lying to oneself. More importantly, we also address how readers can reflect on those common practices and make the decision to change dysfunctional patterns and self-defeating behaviors that cause so many people to underperform in life. If you wish to gain a clearer understanding of yourself and the degree to which your actions are inconsistent with what you think matters most, then perhaps this book is just what you have been looking for. We encourage each reader to make the personal investment to examine each chapter of this book and determine how its contents can change their life. Our promise to you is that this book and its contents can help you to have a clearer understanding of yourself, your habits, your inconsistencies, and your values. The contents of this book contain principles, guidelines, and concepts that you can ponder, test, and evaluate - and our commitment to you is that you will become a more enlightened and insightful person if you incorporate the ideas suggested herein. So . . . . we hope that you choose to be motivated - that you make the affirmative choice to read the pages of this book, to contemplate its message, and apply its insights. That decision to invest in yourself can enable you to live a more fulfilling life, have more meaningful relationships with others, and be more successful in accomplishing your personal and professional goals. The decision to be motivated to read this book is yours. We hope you will find this book to be a useful resource and that its contents will bless your life"--

Book Why We Do what We Do

Download or read book Why We Do what We Do written by Edward L. Deci and published by Putnam Adult. This book was released on 1995 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Edward Deci, one of the country's outstanding social psychologists, writing with former New York Times science and health editor Richard Flaste, offers some bad news and some good news: Rewards and punishments do not make workers perform more effectively, or students learn better, or families function more smoothly - that's the bad news. Indeed, it is the deadening of interest and commitment, from too much control, from overreliance on rewards and threats, that keeps people from peak performance." "But the good news is that people have an innate energy, interest, and excitement about the world that can be encouraged, and when they find greater satisfaction in what they do, they are more effective. Deci shows us how people work more efficiently, learn more intelligently, and treat each other better when their sense of autonomy is encouraged. Give students the reasons why they need to learn something boring, bring workers into the decision process whenever possible, avoid the use of threats, and amazing results will ensue, because people are inherently interested in the world, and they perform optimally when their autonomy is supported. While this good news is a call for autonomy, it is not a call for anarchy. People need limits and structure, but the way these are provided makes all the difference. Reading this book will revolutionize the way we think about motivation - and will give readers insight into what makes us tick."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultures around the world have regarded self-fulfillment as the ultimate goal of human striving and as the fundamental test of the goodness of a human life. The ideal has also been criticized, however, as egotistical or as so value-neutral that it fails to distinguish between, for example, self-fulfilled sinners and self-fulfilled saints. Alan Gewirth presents here a systematic and highly original study of self-fulfillment that seeks to overcome these and other arguments and to justify the high place that the ideal has been accorded. He does so by developing an ethical theory that ultimately grounds the value of self-fulfillment in the idea of the dignity of human beings. Gewirth begins by distinguishing two models of self- fulfillment--aspiration-fulfillment and capacity-fulfillment--and shows how each of these contributes to the intrinsic value of human life. He then distinguishes between three types of morality--universalist, particularist, and personalist--and shows how each contributes to the values embodied in self-fulfillment. Building on these ideas, he develops a Odialectical' conception of reason that shows how human rights are central to self-fulfillment. Gewirth also argues that self-fulfillment has a social as well as an individual dimension: that the nature of society and the obstacles that disadvantaged groups face affect strongly the character of the self-fulfillment that persons can achieve. Bold in scope and rigorous in execution, Self-Fulfillment is a powerful new contribution to moral, social, and political philosophy.

Download or read book Intrinsic Motivation written by Edward L. Deci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I begin to write this Preface, I feel a rush of excitement. I have now finished the book; my gestalt is coming into completion. Throughout the months that I have been writing this, I have, indeed, been intrinsically motivated. Now that it is finished I feel quite competent and self-determining (see Chapter 2). Whether or not those who read the book will perceive me that way is also a concern of mine (an extrinsic one), but it is a wholly separate issue from the intrinsic rewards I have been experiencing. This book presents a theoretical perspective. It reviews an enormous amount of research which establishes unequivocally that intrinsic motivation exists. Also considered herein are various approaches to the conceptualizing of intrinsic motivation. The book concentrates on the approach which has developed out of the work of Robert White (1959), namely, that intrinsically motivated behaviors are ones which a person engages in so that he may feel competent and self-determining in relation to his environment. The book then considers the development of intrinsic motiva tion, how behaviors are motivated intrinsically, how they relate to and how intrinsic motivation is extrinsically motivated behaviors, affected by extrinsic rewards and controls. It also considers how changes in intrinsic motivation relate to changes in attitudes, how people attribute motivation to each other, how the attribution process is motivated, and how the process of perceiving motivation (and other internal states) in oneself relates to perceiving them in others.

Download or read book Self Fulfilling Science written by Charles Lowe and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claims that science may becoming 'self-fulfilling' through its impact on objects of study have recently risen to prominence. Despite radical statements about the supposed consequences of such accounts, however, the central notion of scientific self-fulfillment has remained obscure, leading to skewed views of its actual prevalence and significance. Self-Fulfilling Science illuminates this underexplored phenomenon, drawing on insights from philosophy of science to address questions of its conceptualization, prevalence, and significance. The book critically engages with the popular notion that economic theories of homo economicus exhibit self-fulfillment, and explores its relevance to various metaphysical, ethical, and epistemic issues. Extreme claims of fundamental incompatibility with our usual notions of scientific success are ill-founded. Instead, self-fulfillment’s true epistemic significance lies in more local, nuanced philosophical issues such as theory evaluation and the thesis of underdetermination. In presenting a novel framework, this book facilitates deeper engagement with the developing field of self-fulfilling science, and is of interest to philosophers of science, social scientists, and social constructionists.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller that gives readers a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Book Dark Horse

Download or read book Dark Horse written by Todd Rose and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations, we've been stuck with a cookie-cutter mold for success that requires us to be the same as everyone else, only better. This "standard formula" works for some people but leaves most of us feeling disengaged and frustrated. As much as we might dislike the standard formula, it seems like there's no other practical path to financial security and a fulfilling life. But what if there is? In the Dark Horse Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, bestselling author and acclaimed thought leader Todd Rose and neuroscientist Ogi Ogas studied women and men who achieved impressive success even though nobody saw them coming. Dark horses blaze their own trail to a life of happiness and prosperity. Yet what is so remarkable is that hidden inside their seemingly one-of-a-kind journeys are practical principles for achieving success that work for anyone, no matter who you are or what you hope to achieve. This mold-breaking approach doesn't depend on you SAT scores, who you know, or how much money you have. The secret is a mindset that can be expressed in plain English: Harness your individuality in the pursuit of fulfillment to achieve excellence. In Dark Horse, Rose and Ogas show how the four elements of the dark horse mindset empower you to consistently make the right choices that fit your unique interests, abilities, and circumstances and will guide you to a life of passion, purpose, and achievement.

Book Following Your Treasure Map

Download or read book Following Your Treasure Map written by Nicholas J. Mason, Ph.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-06-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practicing specialist in the health and education fields for over thirty-five years, Nicholas J. Mason, Ph.D. has typically worked with clients who feel lost in the bewildering environment of their lives. They say they don't know what they feel or what they want from life. They are unclear about where they are going, and they don't know for sure where they have been. These clients complain of feeling helpless, out of control, confused, disoriented and generally unhappy. They are not fulfilled souls. They need a treasure map to lead them back to a more productive and satisfying path. Other clients feel comfortable with their personal lives but have conflicts at work or difficulty getting their careers on track. Some are happy enough personally and professionally but want to eliminate destructive habits or gain greater control over their bodies. Some feel they know what they need to do but lack motivation. Others have severe health problems. They all would prosper from a treasure map that would show them the most productive way to achieve whatever is best for them, in whatever realm of life where they require it. Dr. Mason has developed such a comprehensive Treasure Map to create gratifying lifestyles. Specifically, the Treasure Map reveals that by maintaining heightened conscious awareness, respecting our bodies and spirits, and invoking the powers of our subconscious, we can learn what we really, really want in life and use that knowledge to reach our optimum levels of fulfillment. In his experience, Dr. Mason has found that people who accept this principle and develop the skills to put it into practice solve many of their problems and greatly enhance the quality of their lives. Therefore, the book's primary purpose is to show readers how to create a lifestyle that enables them first to recognize and then realize their deepest ambitions. After the introductory chapters, readers learn how to use their Treasure Map to achieve autonomy and optimize health, careers, and relationships. Each chapter presents anonymous case studies from Dr. Mason's practice and includes specific exercises and practical techniques, as well as narrative explanations.
