Book The Mother s Assistant

Download or read book The Mother s Assistant written by William C. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother's Assistant: And Young Lady's Friend Deeply interesting and soul-absorbing as the formation of your children's characters is to you, you are in danger of feeling an excess of anxiety, which, by making you really unhappy, may do much to defeat its own object. We wish to see our children good and happy. We tell them that to be good, is the way to be happy. But will they be likely to be impressed with this truth if they see our brow contracted by care, or our cheeks frequently suffused with tears? Far be it from a mother to feel that spirit of indifference, which would enable her to look with 'equal eye' on virtue and vice in her children. But let her trust them in his hand who is Love itself, and endeavor to acquire that peaceful state of mind, which will always be accompanied by serenity of countenance and kindness of manner. Were we to inquire what makes home most happy, we should unhesitatingly answer, the good and amiable dispositions cherished there; and so great is the influence of example, that where parents are exemplary in these respects, the same spirit will, in a greater or less degree, diffuse itself through the family circle. And let not a father, who meets the storms of life, and the many vexations incident to business, think his home the place where to vent the irritable feelings which politeness obliges him to restrain when abroad. Book The Society of the Sacred Heart in the World of Its Times 1865 2000

Download or read book The Society of the Sacred Heart in the World of Its Times 1865 2000 written by Monique Luirard and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of its founder in 1865, the Society of the Sacred Heart experienced exceptional recruitment and expansion, and departure from France of more than 2500 religious at the beginning of the century. Its story is that of the thousands of women who joined it to root their lives in its charism. In the forty countries where they have been sent, they have had to confront liberalism and anti-clericalism, revolution, the effects of Nazism and Marxism and world wars that destroyed their houses and scattered their members. After the Second Vatican Council, the elimination of cloister opened new fields of apostolic work to the Society. This book shows how the congregation developed amid internal crises, which did not differ from those in the Church and civil society, and how from these crises there emerged little by little a new way to be a Religious of the Sacred Heart.

Book Moving Meals and Migrating Mothers

Download or read book Moving Meals and Migrating Mothers written by Abdullahi Osman El-Tom and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Meals and Migrating Mothers: Culinary cultures, diasporic dishes and familial foodways explores the complex interplay between the important global issues of food, families, and migration. We have an introduction and twelve additional chapters which we have organised into three parts: Part I Moving Meals, Markets and Migrant Mothers; Part II Migrating Mothers Performing Identity through Moving Meals; Part III Meanings and Experiences of Migrant Maternal Meals. Although these parts are not mutually exclusive, they are meant to emphasize socio-cultural and economic considerations of migration (Part I), the food itself (Part II), and families (Part III). We have a wide geographic representation, including Europe (Ireland and France), the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Korea. In addition, we have contributors from all stages of career, including full professors, as well recent doctoral graduates. Overall the contributions are interdisciplinary, and therefore use a variety of methodologies, although most make use of traditional social sciences methods, including interviews and ethnographic observations.

Book excerpt: This stimulating book is a comprehensive record of the antebellum period. It examines various aspects of social history and intellectual history of that period in the context of the 19th century's "cult of domesticity." The development of the ideology of domesticity in this period and its implications are clearly explored in this startling and important feminist work.

Book Mothers Sex And Sexuality

Download or read book Mothers Sex And Sexuality written by Michelle Walks and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothers, Sex, and Sexuality talks about things not normally dared spoken out loud—the interconnectedness and conflict between our parental and sexual selves, the taboo of the sexual mother, and why it matters so much to shatter it. What is it about the sexual mother that is incompatible, and at times even disturbing? Why are we threatened by maternal sexuality? And what does this tell us about the structures of gender and power that govern our bodies? Mothers, Sex, and Sexuality presents a rigorous academic analysis of the myriad ways in which the sexual/maternal divide affects women, birthing people, and those of us who assume or are ascribed the title "mother". We examine the way we as mothers talk to our daughters about sex, the way we talk about sex in a cultural context, and the deafening silence around sex in a medical system that overlooks maternal sexuality. We return repeatedly to the impact of both Christianity and Hinduism on the mother as someone to be revered but tightly controlled. We embrace the lost eroticism of mothering and hail breastfeeding as a sexual maternal practice, arguing for a new, broader, feminist understanding of sexuality. We discuss the way fat mothers destabalise the heteronormative maternal model, the way kinky queers are reconfiguring the sexual/maternal divide through erotic role-play, and we explore the strange, intense, and romantic domestic relationship that springs up between mothers and nannies—two heterosexual women trapped together in a homoerotic triangulation of need and desire. In a titillating climax we revel in the sexual maternal as embodied through performance art, poetry, installations, and comedy, disrupting queer readings of bodies as we are invited to both fuck, and fuck with, the maternal. This book boldly provides both a challenge to the patriarchal constraints of motherhood and a racy road-map escape route out of the sexual-maternal dichotomy.
