Book excerpt: Life seems perfect in Valley Farm, a quiet community in Northumberland. Then a shocking discovery shatters the silence. The owners of a big country house have employed a house-sitter, a young ecologist named Patrick, to look after the place while they're away. But Patrick is found dead by the side of the lane into the valley - a beautiful, lonely place to die. DI Vera Stanhope arrives on the scene with her colleagues, and when they search the attic of the house, where Patrick has a flat, she finds a second body. All the two victims have in common is a fascination with moths. As Vera is drawn into the claustrophobic world of this increasingly strange community, she realises that there may be deadly secrets trapped here...

Book How to Build Your Own Moth Trap

  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2017-12-22

Download or read book How to Build Your Own Moth Trap written by Paul Palmer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes two designs of moth trap in sufficient detail for almost anyone to build using hobbyist skills using easily sourced materials and components. The design of the portable moth trap in this book is the result of several years experimentation with various materials and light sources. None of the experiments was ever a complete failure, but the final design using 0.75 W UV LEDS works about as well as established trap designs using an 8 W actinic tube when used in the countryside. I can easily carry eight of these traps when I am recording in the countryside. A second design, using a 240 Volt mains supply, allows use of brighter bulbs such as 20 W actinic CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) with proportionally larger catches. This mains powered trap is robust enough to be used in all weathers throughout the year, especially when a more robust storage box is used instead of a bucket for a base. In overlooked gardens CFL 'Black-light' bulbs are a good alternative and are unlikely to cause offence.

Download or read book Moth Catcher written by Michael M. Collins and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2007-08-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoir of a scientist and the wild silk moths he studiesBiologist Michael Collins has been studying wild silk moths since he was a boy. This family — which includes the largest and most colorful of the North American moths — led Collins into a long career as a scientist, and has provided him with significant insights into the process by which new species evolve. Moth Catcher is Collins’s engaging account of his development as a scientist and of his groundbreaking research. The canyon and pass environments of the American West offer a setting in which, since the last Ice Age, organisms have adapted to new surroundings and where many have formed new species. Collins has discovered in the Sierra Nevada that geneticists call a “hybrid zone” where two species interbreed. This hybrid zone is unusual because both sexes are fertile, unlike lab-bred hybrids between the same silk moth species. Collins explains how such hybrid populations serve as laboratories in nature where the process of speciation can be observed and studied. This book offers a fascinating view into the work of a field scientist and the ways that evolution continues to operate around us. Collins’s colorful accounts of his fieldwork will delight any reader who loves the outdoors and is captivated by the diversity and interrelations of the life forms found there. And his passion for his research and the fragile, exquisite creatures that he studies will inspire a new appreciation of the wonders of the natural world and the myriad life forms that occupy it.

Book excerpt: From Ann Cleeves—New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of the Vera and Shetland series, both of which are hit TV shows—comes Harbour Street. “Ann Cleeves is one of my favorite mystery writers.”—Louise Penny As the snow falls thickly on Newcastle, the shouts and laughter of Christmas revelers break the muffled silence. Detective Joe Ashworth and his daughter Jessie are swept along in the jostling crowd onto the Metro. But when the train is stopped due to the bad weather, and the other passengers fade into the swirling snow, Jessie notices that one lady hasn't left the train: Margaret Krukowski has been fatally stabbed. Arriving at the scene, DI Vera Stanhope is relieved to have an excuse to escape the holiday festivities. As she stands on the silent, snow-covered station platform, Vera feels a familiar buzz of anticipation, sensing that this will be a complex and unusual case. Then, just days later, a second woman is murdered. Vera knows that to find the key to this new killing she needs to understand what had been troubling Margaret so deeply before she died - before another life is lost. She can feel in her bones that there's a link. Retracing Margaret's final steps, Vera finds herself searching deep into the hidden past of this seemingly innocent neighborhood, led by clues that keep revolving around one street...Harbour Street. Told with piercing prose and a forensic eye, Ann Cleeves' gripping novel explores what happens when a community closes ranks to protect their own-and at what point silent witnesses become complicit.
