This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into slavery in North Carolina around 1786, Moses Grandy was bequeathed to his young playmate, his original owner's son, when they were both eight years old. Hired out until he was twenty-one, Grandy describes each of his temporary masters--some cruel and some kind. His first wife is sold shortly after they marry, and he never sees her again. After saving his money whenever possible and buying his freedom for $600, Grandy is betrayed by his childhood friend, who sells him. Grandy marries again and purchases his freedom a second time, only to be once again betrayed. With the assistance of white friends, Grandy buys his freedom a third time and moves north. He is also able to purchase the freedom of his second wife, but their children remain in slavery. Grandy wrote this Narrative to raise funds for the freedom of his children. A DOCSOUTH BOOK. Book A Plan for the Abolition of Slavery

Download or read book A Plan for the Abolition of Slavery written by Moses E. Levy and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Moses Levy's tract, originally published in London in 1828, is the earliest and most important anti-slavery document by an American Jew. Though the work was published anonymously, due to Levy's vulnerability as a sugar planter and investor in Florida, it's authorship was well known in antislavery circles in London at the time. Brithish abolitionists had the highest regard for the American visitor, whom they compared to their own William Wilberforce. Levy's fame as an abolitionist did not accompany him on his return to Florida, where such ideas were anathema. His situation was complicated by the pro-slavery position taken by his politically ambitious son, David Levy Yulee, who was elected to the U.S. senate in 1845. Yulee's efforts to distance himself from his father's Judaism and progressive social beliefs led to their permanent estrangement. When Levy died in 1854 his abolitionism was unknown in America and forgotten in Britain. Nearly a century and a half later, Chris Monaco, researching Levy's plan to settle European Jews in Florida, followed the trail to London and discovered the abolitionist connection. He came across the anonymous "A Plan for the Abolition of Slavery" in the British National Library and recognized Moses Levy as its author. In his introduction to this reprinting of the tract, Monaco expertly places Levy and his work in historical context, highlighting the uniqueness of the document and the extraordinary vision of its author"--Jacket.

Book Egyptian and American Slavery a Comparison

Download or read book Egyptian and American Slavery a Comparison written by Henry Clay McDougal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian and American Slavery, a Comparison: Moses and Lincoln, a Parallel Drawn Between Israel's Leader and America's President "And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; all their service, wherein they were made to serve, was with rigor." This oppression continued up to the time of Moses. "Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years." The exact date of their exodus is uncertain, but it is probable that it began about fifteen hundred years before Christ. Notwithstanding Egyptian oppression, the Israelites became "as the stars of heaven for multitude" for the seventy who originally went there had increased to "about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides children" at the time Moses led them over into the wilderness. The first census taken in the wilderness shows that "from twenty years old and upwards, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty." This did not include the Levites, who had charge of the tabernacle, and whose numbers aggregated over twenty-two thousand males above one year old, nor did it include the women. With all included there must have been over two millions of the children of Israel that followed their great leader out of Egypt and into the wilderness. There "they did eat manna forty years until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a new perspective on the saga of the enslavement of the Jewish people and their departure from Egypt, this study compares the Jewish experience with that of African-American slaves in the United States, as well as the latter group’s subsequent fight for dignity and equality. This consideration dives deeply into the biblical narrative, using classical and modern commentaries to explore the social, psychological, religious, and philosophical dimensions of the slave experience and mentality. It draws on slave narratives, published letters, eyewitness accounts, and recorded interviews with former slaves, together with historical, sociological, economic, and political analyses of this era. The book explores the five major needs of every long-term victim and journeys through these five stages with the Israelite and the African-American slaves on their historical path toward physical and psychological freedom. This rich, multi-dimensional collage of parallel and contrasting experiences is designed to enrich readers’ understanding of the plight of these two groups.
