Book Beauty of Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beauty, which is what is meant by art. . . is no mere accident to human life, which people can take or leave as they choose, but a positive necessity of life." —William Morris William Morris, the leader of the British Arts and Crafts movement, was a man of tremendous energies, his accomplishments astonishing in their range and depth. He became successively a poet, embroiderer, pattern designer, calligrapher, dyer, weaver, translator, architectural preservationist, socialist, and book publisher and printer. As the head of the internationally successful Morris & Company, he devoted himself to the decorative arts. Drawing upon The Huntington's superb holdings of the largest collection of Morris material in North America, this book examines the life and work of the designer and of Morris & Company. It contains detailed studies of Morris's stained glass, interior decoration designs, and book publishing ventures, as well as an essay on his successor at Morris & Company, J. H. Dearle. The book also explores the design legacy of Morris and the firm in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries on both sides of the Atlantic. Diane Waggoner, curator of the exhibition at The Huntington, is a specialist in nineteenth-century art and has written about the photography of Lewis Carroll. The contributors include Pat Kirkham, Professor of Design History at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture; Gillian Naylor, professor emerita at the Royal College of Art and an expert on the Arts and Crafts movement; and Edward R. Bosley, director of the Gamble House in Pasadena, California.

Book excerpt: A collection of quotations by and about William Morris, exploring his passionately held view that beautiful, functional design should be accessible to all William Morris (1834-1896) was a radical thinker whose democratic vision for society and art has continued to influence designers, artists and writers to this day. He was a gifted poet, architect, painter, writer and textile designer, who also founded the Kelmscott Press, the most famous of the Arts and Crafts private presses. Morris' ideas later came to influence numerous artists and craftspeople who sought to negotiate a viable place within the modern world in the troubled years that followed the First World War. His ideals inspired designers, including those who contributed to the 1951 Festival of Britain, with a direct sense of mission to bring the highest design standards within the reach of everyone. This collection of quotations by Morris, his friends, associates and those who came after, including Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, among others, reveals and explores his passionately held view that beautiful, functional design should be accessible to all.

Book William Morris

Download or read book William Morris written by Arthur Clutton-Brock and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered one of the most prominent actors of the Victorian era, William Morris (1843-1896) was a poet, artist, designer, and editor, and did not hesitate to express his socialist political views, which at the time were frowned upon by the estalishment. His encounters with Rossetti and Burne-Jones, as well as his religious studies, made him a man of manifold talents. From this mixture of genres, William Morris would go on to construct a remarkable career, applying his ideas through various enterprises he established under the name of the William Morris Companies, revolutionizing both interior decorating and architecture. He quickly understood the advantage of industrial production techniques, which he used to design his creations. Together with John Ruskin, he also became a co-founder of the Arts and Crafts movement. Despite his admiration for Ruskin, he did not hesitate to publish his own poems in 1858 in his publishing house, Kelmscott Press. His fascination with the pre-Raphaelite painters lead him to push aside the canons of English art, and, under the influence of Ruskin, to launch the rediscovery of the medieval style of decoration. While drawing tapestries, carpets, glasswork, and other fine elements of interior decor, he became a fervent defender of socialism and participated actively in the Socialist Democratic Federation, which later became known as the Socialist League.William Morris transformed his dreams and ideals into the deeds that still inspire our admiration today.Through a series of illustrations, this work examines the scope of Morriss talent, which continues to have a major influence on our daily lives today.
