This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morphology, Taxonomy, and Biology of Larval Scarabaeoidea The family Passalidae, which inhabits decaying wood, is represented in tropical forests by numerous species but in North America by only one species, Passalus cornutus Fab. Some species of this family are of biological interest because of a certain degree of social organization ascribed to them, the adults being known to attend the larvae and care for them throughout their period of development to maturity. The adults chew the woody food and prepare it before feeding it to the larvae. The hastening of decay in rotten logs can be said to be a beneficial phase exhibited by this group of insects. Book Coleoptera Beetles Morphology and Systematics

Download or read book Coleoptera Beetles Morphology and Systematics written by Rolf G. Beutel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised edition of the first of three volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treats the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With over 380,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. Moreover, numerous species are tremendously important economically. The beetle volumes meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages, phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book excerpt: This three-volume series represents a comprehensive treatment of the beetles of Australia, a relatively under-studied fauna that includes many unusual and unique lineages found nowhere else on Earth. Volume 2 contains 36 chapters, providing critical information and identification keys to the genera of the Australian beetle families included in suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga and several groups of Polyphaga (Scirtoidea, Hydrophiloidea, Scarabaeoidea, Buprestoidea and Tenebrionidae). Each chapter is richly illustrated in black and white drawings and photographs. The book also includes colour habitus figures for about 1000 Australian beetle genera and subgenera belonging to the families treated in this volume. This volume is a truly international collaborative effort, as the chapters have been written by 23 contributors from Australia, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Poland and USA.

Book Larval Systematics of the Troginae in North America with Notes on Biologies and Life Histories Coleoptera Scarabaeidae

Download or read book Larval Systematics of the Troginae in North America with Notes on Biologies and Life Histories Coleoptera Scarabaeidae written by Charles William Baker and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the immature stages of the subfamily Troginae in North America was conducted from the spring of 1963 through the spring of 1965, Larvae of Trox and Omorgus were easily reared in the laboratory, but all attempts to rear the larvae of Glaresis were unsuccessful, The suberosus group, one of the five groups of species within the genus Trox in North America as recognized by Vaurie (1955), is given generic status. The 17 species of the suberosus group are placed in the genus Omorgus which was originally proposed by Erichson (1847) with Trox suberosus later designated as the type. The placement of these 17 species in Omorgus is done on the basis of the larval morphology and recent work on the morphology and cytogenetics of the adults. A table listing 17 characters by which the genus Trox may be distinguished from the genus Omorgus is presented. The other four groups of species in North America, as recognized by Vaurie (1955), are retained in the genus Trox. The adults of 22 species of Trox and Omorgus were collected during the summers of 1963, 1964, and 1965, in the states of Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Cultures of these beetles were established in the laboratory and 595 larvae were reared for the systematic studies of the immature stages. Additional material was borrowed from the U.S. National Museum and Dr. P.O. Ritcher, and the larvae of two species were used for the descriptions. Generic descriptions of the larvae of Trox and Omorgus are given along with brief descriptions of 24 of the 42 species of these genera known to occur in North America. The larvae of the following species are described: T. scaber (L.), T. aequalis Say, T. fascifer LeConte, T. atrox LeConte, T. spinulosus dentibius Robinson, T. foveicollis Harold, T. frontera Vaurie, T. sonorae LeConte, T. robinsoni Vaurie, T. tuberculatus (De Geer), T. plicatus Robinson, T. sordidus LeConte, T. variolatus Melsheimer, T. unistriatus Beauvois, O. suberosus (Fabricius), O. rubricans (Robinson), O. carinatus (Loomis), O. monachus (Herbst), O. fuliginosus (Robinson), O. asper LeConte, O. punctatus (Germar), O. inflatus (Loomis), O. texanus LeConte, O. scutellaris (Say). The general life history of Trox scaber (L.) as it occurs in the laboratory is described and notes on other species are included. A section on the general biology of Trox and Omorgus is given. The method whereby the immature stages of Trox and Omorgus were reared is described. Pertinent morphological characters of the immature stages are presented in 59 figures, and the literature of the immature stages reviewed on a worldwide basis. A key to the third stage larvae is given, but larvae of several closely related species were inseparable and are keyed out in the same couplet. Structures of taxonomic importance include the epipharynx, hypopharynx, antennae, head capsule setation and topography, maxillae, spiracles, and setal and spinule patterns on the thoracic and abdominal lobes and legs. A simplified terminology is utilized for reference to the lobes of the abdominal and thoracic regions. The terms subtorma, subapotorma, and fused phobal mass are proposed to facilitate the description of the larval hypopharynx and epipharynx. A synoptic collection of the larvae utilized in this study has been deposited in the collection of the U.S. National Museum, Washington, D.C.

Book Skeletal Musculature in Larval Phases of the Beetle Epicauta Segmenta Coleoptera Meloidae

Download or read book Skeletal Musculature in Larval Phases of the Beetle Epicauta Segmenta Coleoptera Meloidae written by A. Berrios-Ortiz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, the first in an intended series of anatomical investigations of the blister beetles, was undertaken primarily for the purpose of determining the changes that occur in the skeletal musculature during postembryonic larval development. The species studied, Epicauta segmenta (Say), like others belong ing to the coleopterous family Meloidae, is characterized by hypermetamor phosis (SELANDER and WEDDLE, 1969). The egg develops into an active, well sclerotized larva that searches for grasshopper eggs, which, as in the case of all species of Epicauta, serve as the sole larval food. This triungulin phase of the larval stage, as it is called, is followed by the first grub phase (Fig. 1), during which the larva continues to feed and undergoes several molts. After feeding is completed the larva commonly enters a sessile, diapausing coarctate phase in which the integument is heavily sclerotized and the appendages, including the legs, are vestigial (Fig. 2). Following this the larva attains an active second grub phase (Fig. 3) closely resembling the first grub phase in external anatomy. Normally, the second grub phase leads directly to pupation and the formation of the adult. An alternate, abbreviated developmental pattern, involving pupation immediately after the first grub phase, is also recorded in this and many other species of Epicauta.
