  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400996349
  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Genus Medicago Leguminosae written by K.A. Lesins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In introducing ourselves it should be told that in our native Latvian language our name is written LesiJ;l. s. In most English publications, as in this work, the writing has been simplified to Lesins, and often only the first initial has been used. Our interest in Medicago was first aroused during 1936-38, while em ployed as teachers in the agricultural and home economics school at Be brene, Upper Zemgale, Latvia. Some plants of alfalfa (M. varia, M. media), locally called 'lucema', were found growing wild along roadsides in that area, though no alfalfa fields had been seen in the vicinity within the me mory of local farmers. Some roadside plants were dug out and transplanted to the garden, but their seedset was poor. During the next few years we paid only slight attention to alfalfa, the reason being that Latvia is a country with Atlantic climatic features (annual precipitation 600-700 mm; mild win ters for its 56°-58° N. Lat. , with January isotherms between -3° and -7° C; moderately warm summers, with July isotherms between 16° and 18° C), which together with its soils, mostly of acidic, podzolic type, is not well suited for alfalfa production. It was not until 1945 in Sweden that work on alfalfa came to the foreground, when the senbor author was assigned investi gations on alfalfa seed setting by Dr. Erik Akerberg, then director of the Swedish Seed Association branch station at ffituna.

Book Molecular Breeding of Forage Crops

Download or read book Molecular Breeding of Forage Crops written by German Spangenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forage plant breeding has entered the genome era. This timely book reviews the latest advances in the development and application of molecular technologies which supplement conventional breeding efforts for our major forage crops. It describes the plethora of new technologies and tools now available for high-throughput gene discovery, genome-wide gene expression analysis, production of transgenic plants, genome analysis and marker-assisted selection as applied to forage plants. Detailed accounts are presented of current and future opportunities for innovative applications of these molecular tools and technologies in the identification, functional characterisation, and use of valuable genes in forage production systems and beyond. This book represents a valuable resource for plant breeders, geneticists, and molecular biologists, and will be of particular relevance to advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers with an interest in forage legumes and grasses.

Book Applied Genetics of Leguminosae Biotechnology

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legumes include many very important crop plants that contribute very critical protein to the diets of both humans and animals around the world. Their unique ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen in association with Rhizobia enriches soil fertility, and establishes the importance of their niche in agriculture. Divided into two volumes, this work presents an up-to-date analysis of in vitro and recombinant DNA technologies for the improvement of grain, forage and tree legumes. Volume 10B presents the current state and future prospects of in vitro regeneration and genetic transformation expression and stability of transgenes modification of traits in almost all the important legumes, for example: soybean; peanut; pea; french bean; chick pea; pigeon pea; cowpea; mung bean; black gram; azuki bean; lentil; Lathyrus; lupinus; Lotus spp; Medicago spp; Trifolium spp; Winged bean; Guar; and tree legumes for their improvement.

Book Plant Evolution and the Origin of Crop Species

Download or read book Plant Evolution and the Origin of Crop Species written by James F. Hancock and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genetic variability that developed in plants during their evolution is the basic of their domestication and breeding into the crops grown today for food, fuel and other industrial uses. This third edition of Plant Evolution and the Origin of Crop Species brings the subject up-to-date, with more emphasis on crop origins. Beginning with a description of the processes of evolution in native and cultivated plants, the book reviews the origins of crop domestication and their subsequent development over time. All major crop species are discussed, including cereals, protein plants, starch crops, fruits and vegetables, from their origins to conservation of their genetic resources for future development.

Book Principles of Seed Science and Technology

Download or read book Principles of Seed Science and Technology written by Lawrence O. Copeland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Fourth Edition of Principles of Seed Science and Technology, like the fIrst three editions, is written for the advanced undergraduate student or lay person who desires an introduction to the science and technology of seeds. The fIrst nine chapters present the seed as a biological system and cover its origin, development, composition, function (and sometimes nonfunction), performance and ultimate deterioration. The last nine chapters present the fundamentals of how seeds are produced, conditioned, evaluated and distributed in our modern agricultural society. Two new chapters have been added in this fourth edition, one on seed ecology and the second on seed drying. Finally, revisions have been made throughout to reflect changes that have occurred in the seed industry since publication of the Third Edition. Because of the fundamental importance of seeds to both agriculture and to all of society, we have taken great care to present the science and technology of seeds with the respect and feeling this study deserves. We hope that this feeling will be communicated to our readers. Furthermore, we have attempted to present information in a straight-forward, easy-ta-read manner that will be easily understood by students and lay persons alike. Special care has been taken to address both current state-of-the-art as well as future trends in seed technology.
