Book excerpt: This dissertation titled "Worthy of imitation" : contemporary Mormon drama on the latter day stage examines contemporary dramatic works written by current and former members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (hereafter LDS Church or Mormon Church). During the past four decades, Mormon theatre has evolved in response to both the changing cultural attitudes within the Church and the changing cultural responses from "secular" America toward Mormonism. In my examination of this evolution, I focus on six plays that are representative of a variety of thematic and artistic trends and consider the extent to which these dramatic works reveal a particularly Mormon aesthetic, one infused with theological, cultural, and geographical identifications. In my introduction and first chapter, I address the influences of Mormon belief and the conscious use of Mormon thought in the work of LDS artists. The historical and current deliberations regarding Mormon aesthetics and how they relate to theological tenets particular to the LDS Church are explained. This explanation sets the groundwork for my discussion of the significance of theatre by LDS dramatists. Chapters two, three, and four each focus on a specific trend in contemporary Mormon drama and two plays representative of each trend. The text, performance, audience and critical reception, creative origin, and continued legacy are all considered as they relate to the cultural and theological world of Mormonism. Sources include published and unpublished scripts; live productions; film adaptations; interviews with playwrights and directors; playbills, reviews, and production photographs. The chapters include plays written between 1973 and 2006 that have been produced in both Utah and in other national and international locations. The act of Mormon self-representation on stage reveals the cultural attitudes LDS members have of themselves in relation to their faith and to the secular world. This dissertation examines the extent to which playwrights answer Brigham Young's call to show the world an example "worthy of imitation" by using theatre as means to explore, construct, and interpret Mormon identity while both entertaining and challenging their audiences.
