Time is running out: Zoe knows her own death will be the climax of Glover's sinister play, which has been unfolding for twenty years. Book excerpt: Blood is more than a fluid solution of cells, platelets and plasma. It is a symbol for the most basic of human concerns--life, death and family find expression in rituals surrounding everything from menstruation to human sacrifice. Comprehensive in its scope and provocative in its argument, this book examines beliefs and rituals concerning blood in a range of regional and religious contexts throughout human history. Meyer reveals the origins of a wide range of blood rituals, from the earliest surviving human symbolism of fertility and the hunt, to the Jewish bris, and the clitoridectomies given to young girls in parts of Africa. The book also explores how cultural practices influence gene selection and makes a connection with the natural sciences by exploring how color perception influences the human proclivity to create blood symbols and rituals.

Book Thicker Than Blood

Download or read book Thicker Than Blood written by Maitreyabandhu and published by Windhorse Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about friendship -- about the Buddhist ideals of spiritual friendship and the author's personal experience. Maitreyabhandhu's account, by turns moving, funny, and inspirational, is as compelling as a good novel. Woven into the tapestry of the many different aspects of friendship, such as openness, communication, fidelity, and altruism, is the colorful thread of Maitreyabandhu's own experiences -- from childhood through to his quest for life's meaning and wholehearted engagement with Buddhism. Writing with a refreshing candor, Maitreyabandhu does not shy away from those crucial and intimate issues that concern us all -- aloneness, sexuality, and falling in love. Copyright © Libri GmbH. Book Tongue is more than blood

Download or read book Tongue is more than blood written by Daniele Ungaro and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I have tried to illustrate the importance of language for contemporary neo-populist political expressions. In the wake of Klemperer’s work, I discovered that language forms a specific social reality by activating above all projective mechanisms capable of reinforcing the difference between in-group and out-group. In the contemporary context, the neo-populist language and its medium contributes to the transformation of the “modern” representation of facts. What neo-populist communication successfully practices is the substitution of data analysis through a form of sentiment analysis. I consider this phenomenon in two empirical cases. Brexit and the electoral success of M5S in Italy. Despite the differences between these two forms of neo-populism, in both cases it emerges how language, through its projective mechanisms, can identify a social bloc united against an imaginary enemy.
