Book The Last Children s Plague

Download or read book The Last Children s Plague written by Richard J. Altenbaugh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poliomyelitis, better known as polio, thoroughly stumped the medical science community. Polio's impact remained highly visible and sometimes lingered, exacting a priceless physical toll on its young victims and their families as well as transforming their social worlds. This social history of infantile paralysis is plugged into the rich and dynamic developments of the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Children became epidemic refugees because of anachronistic public health policies and practices. They entered the emerging, clinical world of the hospital, rupturing physical and emotional connections with their parents and siblings. As they underwent rehabilitation, they created ward cultures. They returned home to occasionally find hostile environments and always discover changed relationships due to their disabilities. The changing concept of the child, from an economic asset to an emotional commitment, medical advances, and improved sanitation policies led to significant improvements in child health and welfare. This study, relying on published autobiographies, memoirs, and oral histories, captures the impact of this disease on children's personal lives, encompassing public-health policies, hospitalization, philanthropic and organizational responses, physical therapy, family life, and schooling. It captures the anger, frustration, and terror not only among children but parents, neighbors, and medical professionals alike.

Book Shakespeare Then and Again

Download or read book Shakespeare Then and Again written by Sanghamitra Dasgupta and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you call studying Shakespeare an exercise in futility? Or an imposition of colonialism even after the sun has sunk deep for the Britishers? Why should we wrack our brains to understand an archaic language? Why, in our post-colonial times, would we wish to know what an English dramatist of the 16th century wrote about? Well, do read his plays, despite their sometimes-archaic language, to know the answers to those questions. They have so much to tell us about the ways of men and women, of rulers and governments, of illusions and delusions, of love and war, of order and anarchy! Sounds as if I am talking about current times? You think you’re living in tempestuous times? Well, so had Shakespeare. And the times haven’t changed! Because, men and women, despite everything, haven’t changed! Don’t believe me. Find out for yourselves. Just pick up Shakespeare Then and Again: The Tempest and see this play is a mirror for us. This book is meant for Shakespearean fans as well as sceptics, students, teachers, et al. And the answers to so many questions are not blowin’ in the wind but are to be found in this play.

Download or read book Stinging Insect Allergy written by Theodore M. Freeman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book thoroughly covers the field of stinging insect allergy; addressing all clinical aspects, including diagnosis and therapeutic recommendations. Stinging Insect Allergy: A Clinician’s Guide begins with a look into the entomologic aspects of Hymenoptera insects (bees, vespids, wasps and ants), which cause nearly all the IgE mediated reactions due to insects. Further chapters single out and examine the unique aspects of common Hymenoptera species, such as bees and fire ants, in rich detail. Later chapters clinically review what is known about non-Hymenoptera biting insects, such as mosquitoes. In addition, multiple chapters address the overlap of Hymenoptera allergy as practiced in North America and Europe, as well as other sciences. Final chapters cover the impact ecology is having on insect allergy; and the impact insect allergy is having on other areas of medicine, such as mast cell disorders. Stinging Insect Allergy: A Clinician’s Guide is an ideal resource for medical students, residents, allergists, and general practitioners alike, and also serves as an important reference text for any practitioner of allergy and immunology who desires a complete picture of Hymenoptera and non-Hymenoptera insect allergy.
