Book Kindergarten Tales and Then Some

Download or read book Kindergarten Tales and Then Some written by Lloyd Wright and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kindergarten Tales and Then Some is about students in kindergarten and then some more stories. The story about the bus is intended to show the children riding the school bus the first time there is nothing to fear. When I first went to school I only needed a Big Chief tablet, lead pencil, and a box of crayons. I wrote the story on required school supplies so someday the children now in kindergarten will be able to look back and compare what they needed versus their grandchildren. Santa is present in some of the stories along with his reindeer and sleigh. It goes without saying where there is Santa there will be some of his elves. There are stories about how holidays are celebrated by kindergarten students. The book also tells of the compassion and generosity of the children toward others. Put all the stories together and they will show you the world will be in good hands in the future.

Book excerpt: Folktales teach, inform, and heal. Most of all, they entertain. Here's a collection of tales rich with homespun humor, charm, and wisdom--all told with flair by some of Florida's best and most sought-after storytellers. Their stories will make you feel part of the great "family" that is Florida. If it's spooky ghost stories you crave, let "The Silent Customer," "Kissimmee Bound," and "The Ghost Dog of the Biltmore" chill your spine. Heed the Cracker wisdom handed down in "Seek the Higher Ground," cow-hunter poetry with a message. Chuckle over the misadventures of Flossie, Bubba, and Flo in "Three Little Cracker Pigs," a tongue-in-cheek version of the classic children's tale. Test your wits against the little troll in "Angelina and Cigam." Will he have you running in circles, growing smaller with each snap of his fingers? Take "Cousin Cassie's Cookin" with a grain of salt. It's not true, of course. Then again, if Cassie asks you to dinner, say you have other plans. Many Indian legends attempt to explain why the world exists as it is. In this tradition, several tales target specific flukes of nature--the rabbit's short tail, the flamingo's long neck, the woodpecker's lack of song--and offer entertaining reasons for their existence. Discover these legends too: "The Devil's Millhopper," "The Legend of Lake Okeechobee," "Monkey, the Trickster," "Why Florida Key Deer Are So Small." A few history lessons never hurt anyone, and these are entertaining as well. Jonathan Dickinson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Jake Summerlin have a thing or two to teach you about overcoming adversity and being resourceful. Settle back into your easy chair and let these tales entertain you.

Download or read book Now and at the Hour written by Martin Drapkin and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy Malsavage, a young aide, is shocked at the scared look in twelve-year-old Ricky's eyes when the boy is wheeled into B Ward, victim of a serious brain injury suffered in a football game. Ricky can't walk or talk, but his intelligence is unaffected. Buddy also feels sorry for Ricky. A fifty-four-year-old man with cerebral palsy, he too is trapped in a body that doesn't work well, but his mind is fine. As the months pass, the three grow closer. Billy has his own inner demons, but does what he can to make Ricky feel better, less scared, among the residents of the ward, most of whom have severe or profound mental retardation. He reads to Ricky and Buddy and shows Laurel and Hardy movies. Buddy does what he can to befriend Ricky. As Ricky weakens and his physical condition worsens, he turns to his Catholic faith for solace. But can his faith help him in his desperation? Can anything? This is a novel about three isolated people who struggle to connect with others and to find some meaning, and maybe even salvation, in their lives. Billy, who has been working in B Ward for about a year, right after graduating from high school, is a reclusive loner who left home and his "whacko" parents as soon as he could. Buddy lived on the farm with his folks and then with just his brother and sister-in-law until they could no longer care for him and he had to be institutionalized. He hates enduring the indignities of being helpless, and longs for heaven. Ricky, until his terrible accident, was a normal kid living at home with his parents and sisters, playing sports and hanging out with his friends. At first, Ricky finds many of the residents bizarre or frightening. There's Gramps, the oldest person with Down syndrome in the state, and his twisted-up little friend Timmy, who spend most of each day holding hands. There's sullen Arnie, who always wears his stars and stripes hard hat and studies lingerie catalogs. There's annoying Larry the Whacker and little Davey, who scoots around the floor on his back and dusts the legs of cribs with a washcloth. But as time goes on, Ricky grows more used to them. When Ricky's condition takes a turn for the worse, Buddy and Billy feel helpless and worried. Will he get better? What if he doesn't? In his lonely hospital room, Ricky silently says his prayers and misses his friends. Now and at the Hour is Marty Drapkin's first published work of fiction. He's written and published nonfiction books and articles in his professional field, having to do with county jail operations. He is a self-described faceless bureaucrat laboring unappreciated for an obscure state government agency-the proverbial man in the gray flannel suit, leading a life of quiet desperation. Marty and his wife, Erica, live in Cross Plains, Wisconsin, with a motley crew of dogs and cats, all of whom have issues. He has a grown daughter who lives in Seattle and doesn't mind the rain. It is a real journey -- through the West, the Bible Belt, and Missouri River country -- in Vamper, Critchlow's affectionate name for his 1999 Ford Coachmen camper van. But it is also about Critchlow's life journey, about race, religion, the environment, and a divided America in the age of Donald Trump. Critchlow weaves together people, places, historical anecdotes, political observations, legal tales, and personal history in a way that helps explain the competing narratives in American society today. His journey also tells us something about how a baby boomer might look back and look forward as he moves into his senior years and faces the challenge of retirement.

Download or read book Broken but Beautiful written by Joseph P. Conway and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American church participation has plummeted in recent decades. Abuse scandals and hypocrisy hang in the air. Weekly, I talk to friends and neighbors who have left church, even as many still identify as Christians. I get what they're saying. When I consider the pain that so many have experienced in church life, the body of Christ sure seems broken. It's no wonder many don't find church to be worth it. But maybe there's more to the story. As a child, my family experienced deep crisis. I felt alone and vulnerable. Into that void, the church stepped in. I discovered a family, a people that have my back and forever changed my life. Even now, I see tangible ways the church works for the common good. The church possesses a resilient beauty that continually pushes through the brokenness. If we love Jesus, we have to eventually ask what Jesus loves. Surprising to me at times, Jesus loves the church, despite her brokenness. If we learn to see what Jesus sees, we'll discover a powerful, often untapped means towards human flourishing. No other social group offers what the church offers. Yes, the church is broken, but there's more. She's beautiful.
